Council meetings are usually conducted on the third Tuesday of each month; they commence at 6.30 and
conclude at 8.30pm. All meetings are conducted in the staffroom, interested community members are
welcome to attend. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 19 May.
Last night we extended sincere thanks and warm wishes to our retiring councillors including:
Caroline Muller – parent of Olivia in 5/6C and Will in 2C who served on council for 2 years and also on the
Education Committee. Caroline showed a great interest in all matters relating to Hampton and contributed
profitably to council and Education Committee discussions.
Kylie Jones – parent of Tayla in 5/6D and Lily in 2D who served on council for 2 years and on the
Fundraising Committee as the convenor. Kylie was particularly generous with her time devoted to fundraising
and supporting our school, her optimism and conscientious approach were greatly appreciated.
Tim Branson – parent of Elissa in 5/6E who has served continuously on council for the last 6 years and on the
Buildings and Grounds Committee. For much of this time, Tim has convened the B&Gs team and has been
extraordinarily generous with his time and willingness to share his considerable expertise for the benefit of our
school.
Andrea Douglas – parent of Jayden Crosby who is now in Year 7. Andrea has completed 5 years of service
on our council with 1 year as Vice President and 3 as President. During that time Andrea has served on both
the Education and Finance Committees. Andrea has demonstrated excellent leadership being mindful of short
term requirements and circumstances and at the same time - focusing on the longer term and what ultimately
will be best for our school. She has ensured that fair and balanced debate/discussion occurs at the council
table and is a ‘futures focused’ leader.
Simone Tickell – class teacher of 2A who has served on council and the Education Committee for the last 2
years. Simone takes a very sincere and philosophical approach in all council and committee discussions. She
is particularly interested in ‘big picture’ concepts and possibilities and as a consequence has made a terrific
contribution to council.
Shaune Jackson – parent of Rosie in 5/6E and Stefi in 2E who has served a one year term on council and on
the Buildings and Grounds Committee. Shaune is a very active dad on the B&Gs committee and around the
school generally and has provided an excellent layer of support and expertise to all projects relating to our
school.
Sally Stewart – parent of Sam in 5/6E and Bianca in 2E who has served a one year term on council as the
Parents’ Association representative. Sally has ensured the communication between the PA and the council has
been open and frequent. Her contributions to all discussions have been honest and helpful.
I am most grateful to all of our retiring councillors and thank them sincerely for their time, commitment and
loyalty to our school.
Community Connections
Yesterday at assembly Felicity Thomlinson from the Sandringham Community Bank attended our assembly
and presented a cheque to the school for $800 which went towards the purchase of some picture story books
and some fiction books for our school library. In addition, the bank also provided outstanding support for our
twilight carnival in being a major sponsor and contributing $2,000. We are most grateful to the Sandringham
Community Bank for their ongoing and generous support for our school.

Friendship Lunch on Thursday 19 March
Tomorrow we are having lunch with a difference. All children will be in one of 51 multi-age groups from
Prep-6. The aim of this activity to promote friendship, provide an opportunity for the children to come
together in an informal context to enjoy each other’s company and to take part in a circle time discussion
which will be led by a Year 6 child. Every Year 6 child will take on a leadership role during this time; they
have all been prepared and appear eager to embrace this activity. We have a number of the local schools who
are having a friendship lunch tomorrow as well.
Student Initiative
Lani Forbes in 2C, Coral Gums wrote a letter to the Prime Minister recently about a suggestion for a new
Australian flag. Recently she received a response from him. Well done to Lani for taking the initiative and
sharing her ideas with the Prime Minister.
Sebastian Caceres from 1D – Sugar Gums showed delightful kindness and thoughtfulness at an excursion to
Taskworks recently. The children were making a castle using blocks and the intention was to fit the entire
group inside the castle. Sebastian realised that the doorway into the group’s castle was not wide enough to
accommodate Harry’s wheelchair, so he decided to quickly reassemble the blocks in the doorway to ensure
there was plenty of room for Harry. Well done to Sebastian for the initiative and consideration he showed to
his friend.
Fundraising
On Friday of this week we have two very low key fundraisers happening at school. Our school captains Daniel Watson and Emily Cope are encouraging the children to come dressed as their favourite movie or book
character, so have a look in your dress up box and in the cupboards because I am confident that with a little
foraging, you will find something amusing or appropriate for your children to wear. The children are asked to
bring a gold coin to school on Friday and this will go towards supporting research into cancer. Many of the
Year 6 children are participating in the Relay for Life initiative on 28 March; this mini fundraiser is supporting
that particular event.
We also have the outdoor screening of Big Hero 6 on Friday night on the school oval. This event has a family
focus, bring your rugs and nibbles and join the community from 6.30pm onwards to watch this very
entertaining movie. Bookings can be made at - trybooking.com/BDSH
Assembly
Yesterday we had the pleasure of the Year 3/4 choir leading the singing of the national anthem. Shortly
afterwards this large group of enthusiastic choristers provided a wonderful rendition of ‘My Island Home’
which the audience really enjoyed.

INTESTINAL WORMS
There have been a couple of cases of intestinal worms reported at school so we thought we
would place an update in the newsletter.
Intestinal worms are parasites which infect humans as well as other animals such as cats and
dogs. They are not uncommon, but tend to be more prevalent in children than adults and
more frequently seen in the tropical countries.
There are several different types of worms; of which ring, hook, tape, whip, thread, and
giardia are a few of the more common ones to infect human intestines. The parasite usually
enters your body when you come into contact with infected faeces through contaminated
soil, food or water, through the nose or skin or from a transmitting agent such as a mosquito.
In some cases, no symptoms are evident, but the greater the infestation, the more severe the
symptoms tend to be. Symptoms are: worms in stools, either increased or decreased appetite,
vomiting, foul breath, diarrhoea or bowel blockage, bloating, abdominal cramps and itching
of the anus which may become reddened.
Not all worms can multiply in the human body, but those that do continue to hatch and
multiply, feeding on bowel content and blood. One or several stool samples may be required
to provide a confirmed diagnosis, prior to treatment for the specific parasite. Treatment may
be a single dose medication or several weeks of medication. Medication can be bought over
the counter at a pharmacy.
You can check with your GP or local pharmacy if you have any concerns.
Keep well and healthy Jo and Susie (School nurses)
