TITLE OF THE DISPLAY
REAL SCIENCE THEATER – SCIENCE ON THE BIG SCREEN
BY RACHELLE RAMER ([email protected]) AND
MEGAN O’DONNELL ([email protected]),
GRAINGER ENGINEERING LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION OF EXHIBIT
Super toys. Disasters. Space Travel. Baseball. What do all of these have in common? They are the stuff of dreams
and of science! This display will highlight how real scientific research impacts our lives by linking scientific theories
to related movies. Using movies will spark the interest of the general population while highlighting Grainger
Engineering Library’s vast research collection. This display will pair posters from popular movies with books that
describe the science that inspired them. Signs which clearly explain the interrelation between each set of movie
and scientific discipline will be supplemented with QR codes for quick and easy access to library holdings. QR
codes, also known as two-dimensional barcodes, can be scanned by mobile devices to automatically open a web
browser and display the relevant page from the university’s catalog. Along with the topics listed above, the display
will feature time travel, robotics, nuclear fusion generators, geology, naval architecture, meteorology, virtual
reality, and bioengineering. Through highlighting movies that are interesting and familiar, scientists and nonscientists alike will be inspired with curiosity and driven to explore the Grainger Engineering Library’s collection.

Bioengineering &
Jurassic Park
In Jurassic Park, scientists breed dinosaurs using the DNA extracted
from prehistoric mosquitos. While bioengineering has yet to bring extinct species to life, current research in Japan aims to clone a mammoth
from preserved bone marrow.
Bioengineering researchers cure diseases, grow replacement organs,
design better crops, and build greener virus-built batteries.
Sabermetrics &
Moneyball
Sabermetrics is the math of baseball. Using statistics and physical analysis, managers can predict the future performance of baseball players and
teams. This same math can also help target areas of improvement and
inform training programs. Well-known statistics like a player’s batting
average or Runs Batted In (RBIs) are just a few of the statistical measures
employed in sabermetrics.
The movie (and book) Moneyball, tells the story of how Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane was able to assemble a winning team using sabermetrics.
