Hello, 5th Grade Parents & Guardians! My name is Ty Anderson and I am a Senior at Benedictine University and I will be student teaching for 16 weeks at Caroline Bentley within Mrs. Stevenson's classroom. I am extremely excited to get to work with your young students! I have worked with two 3rd Grade classes as well as a 1st Grade class so I am ready to see what 5th Grade is all about!

Science and Social Studies- When you look at your students grades for midterms, take a
look at missing assignments. There were a lot of absences and sickness before break so
there are some assignments that need to be turned in or redone. I will be getting in touch
with specific students when school is back in session. Stay warm! Math- We began Unit 6
and family letters should be at home for parents reference. We will be using graphs and
charts. Fractions pop up again so make sure you keep practicing.www.ixl.com is a great
resource so please log-in each week to practice current skills. All students need to bring in
the signed permission form to use M&M's for our chart and fraction activity. Please contact
me with health concerns and blocks will be used in place of M&M's.

Next week we will be working on lesson 13 in Storytown. Our reading skill will focus on
cause and effect, and our grammar skill will focus on possessive nouns. In spelling, we will
be working on words with the suffixes -able, -ible, -ment, and -less. In writing, students will
be using precise nouns and verbs in a descriptive paragraph. Lesson 13 tests will be on
Friday, January 16.
Due to the unexpected days off this week, we will continue with lesson 14 into next week,
and also tackle lesson 15. Lesson 15 is a review of lessons 11-14. We will also begin a winter
project looking at water, snow, snowflakes, failure, and growth from failure through
determination. We will take our Lesson 14 tests on Tuesday and lesson 15 tests on Friday.
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great winter break! We are going to switch gears in
Science and move to Chapter 16, Stars and Galaxies. We are going to learn the History of
astronomy, what a star is and how they are grouped together! Did you see that beautiful full
moon on Mon. night?

It was great to see the students on Monday. Hopefully the weather will cooperate so we can
get back on track. We are working with Lesson 11 spelling words and lesson 12 vocabulary
words. Students can practice both sets of words on edmodo. In grammar we are studying
common and proper nouns. Students can access noun games on edmodo. Our reading
skills are making generalizations and compare/contrast. Next week we will continue centers
and start reading an exciting book about Arctic exploration.

This week, we collected and organized data and we will continue that into next week. We are also
going to start working on adding fractions without using fraction sticks. We will also work with
‘Mystery Plots’ and explore stem and leaf plots. Continue to practice on www.ixl.com/signin/nlsd
please!!!
