Statistical Notice Further breakdowns of proven reoffending data by gender and custodial sentence length 22 March 2013 Background This ad-hoc statistical notice presents further breakdowns of already published information on proven re-offending. Further details on proven re-offending can be found in the Proven Reoffending Statistics quarterly bulletin which was last published on 31 January 2013 and covered the twelve months ending March 2011. The data used for this analysis is for the twelve months ending December 2010. This publication can be accessed on the Justice Statistics web page at: www.justice.gov.uk/statistics/reoffending/proven-re-offending The main Proven Re-offending publication should be referred to for the definitions of terms used in this statistical notice, and for commentary to help interpret these results. 1 Proven re-offending Table 1 in this statistical notice gives a further breakdown of information published in the Proven Re-offending Statistics quarterly bulletin for January to December 2010. Within that publication, Table 2 presents adult proven reoffending data by gender and Table 19a presents adult proven re-offending data by custodial sentence length. The information presented here gives the adult proven re-offending data by gender from Table 2 together with a breakdown by gender of the custodial sentence length adult proven reoffending data from Table 19a. Table 1 in this statistical notice provides proven re-offending rates broken down by sentence length. However these figures should not be compared to assess the relative effectiveness of different sentences in reducing reoffending because they are based on offenders with different characteristics, such as age, gender, length of criminal career or number of previous offences. Thus, any difference in re-offending rates could not be solely attributed to the sentence the offender received. 2 Table 1: One year proven re-offending data for adult offenders released from custody in 2010, by gender and custodial sentence length, England and Wales Proportion of offenders who re-offend (%) Average number of re-offences per re-offender Average number of re-offences per offender (frequency rate) Number of re-offences Number of re-offenders Number of offenders in cohort 57.8 4.66 2.69 73,442 15,762 27,277 36.7 3.08 1.13 27,068 8,777 23,928 47.8 4.09 1.96 100,523 24,549 51,395 55.6 5.38 2.99 9,665 1,798 3,235 24.0 2.99 0.72 1,176 393 1,636 44.8 4.95 2.22 10,841 2,191 4,889 57.6 4.73 2.72 83,107 17,560 30,512 35.9 3.08 1.10 28,244 9,170 25,564 47.5 4.16 1.98 111,364 26,740 56,284 Male Less than 12 months 12 months or more 1 Total Female Less than 12 months 12 months or more 1 Total All adult offenders Less than 12 months 12 months or more Total (1) 1 Excluding offenders released from indeterminate sentences for public protection and life sentences 3 Contacts Press enquiries should be directed to the Ministry of Justice press office: Tel: 020 3334 3536 Email: [email protected] Other enquiries about these statistics should be directed to the Justice Statistics Analytical Services division of the Ministry of Justice: Mike Elkins Chief Statistician Ministry of Justice 7th Floor 102 Petty France London SW1H 9AJ Email: [email protected] General enquiries about the statistical work of the Ministry of Justice can be emailed to: [email protected] General information about the official statistics system of the UK is available from: www.statistics.gov.uk © Crown copyright 2013 Produced by the Ministry of Justice You may re-use this information (not including logos) free of charge in any format or medium, under the terms of the Open Government Licence.
