Country report RO LUGOJ, ROMANIA www.ungersteel.com Seite 1 von 10 Country report RO ROMANIA General Issues Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe, on the Lower Danube, within and outside the Carpathian arch, bordering on the Black Sea. Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast and east, and Bulgaria to the south. At 238,391 square kilometres, Romania is the ninth largest country of the European Union by area, and has the seventh largest population of the European Union with 21.5 million people. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, the sixth largest city in the EU with about two million people. With the fall of the Iron Curtain and the 1989 Revolution, Romania began to transition towards democracy and a capitalist market economy. After a decade of post-revolution economic problems, extensive reforms fostered economic recovery and the country joined the European Union on 1 January 2007. Romania is now an upper middle-income country with high human development and relatively high standards of living. www.ungersteel.com Seite 2 von 10 Country report RO Romania joined NATO on 29 March 2004, and is also a member of the Latin Union, of the Francophonie, of the OSCE and of the United Nations, as well as an associate member of the CPLP. Today, Romania is a unitary semi-presidential republic, in which the executive branch consists of the President and the Government. Economy Romania has a developing, upper-middle income market economy, the 11th largest in the European Union by total nominal GDP and the 8th largest based on purchasing power parity. Reforms in the 2000s and its recent entry to the European Union have led to an improved economic outlook. Romania has experienced growth in foreign investment with a cumulative FDI totaling more than $100 billion since 1989, and has been referred to as a "Tiger" due to its high growth rates and rapid development. Until 2009, Romanian economic growth was among the fastest in Europe (officially 8.4% in 2008 and more than three times the EU average). The country is a regional leader in multiple fields, such as IT and motor vehicle production. Bucharest, the capital city, is one of the largest financial and industrial centres in Eastern Europe. In the Romanian press the Romanian economy has been referred as the "Tiger of the East." Romania is a country of considerable economic potential: over 10 million hectares of agricultural land, diverse energy sources (coal, oil, natural gas, hydro, nuclear and wind), a substantial, if aging, manufacturing base and opportunities for expanded development in tourism on the Black Sea and in the mountains. Romania has considerable natural resources for a country of its size, including coal, iron ore, copper, chromium, uranium, antimony, mercury, gold, barite, borate, celestine (strontium), emery, feldspar, limestone, magnesite, marble, perlite, pumice, pyrites (sulfur), clay, arable land and hydropower. Romania's mineral production is adequate to supply its manufacturing output. Energy needs are also met by importing bituminous and anthracite coal and crude petroleum. In 2007 approximately 34 million tons of coal, approximately 4,000 tons of tungsten, 565,000 tons of iron ore, and 47,000 tons of zinc ore were mined. Lesser amounts of copper, lead, molybdenum, gold, silver, kaolin, and fluorite also were mined. www.ungersteel.com Seite 3 von 10 Country report RO LUGOJ Location Lugoj is a city in Timiş County, Banat, western Romania, situated on both banks of the Timiş River (which divides the city in two halves, the Romanian on the right and the German on the left bank). It is the seat of the Eparchy of Lugoj in the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic. Two villages are administered by the city, Măguri and Tapia. The city has an area of 9.855 hectare and is bounded in the northwest by a ridge. www.ungersteel.com Seite 4 von 10 Country report RO Population Lugoj has a population of about 50,000 inhabitants. There are 81.6% Romanians, 10.9% Hungarians, 5.3% Germans and 2.3% Roma. The religious live is characterised by a peaceful coexistence of about 76,6% Orthodox, 13.2% Roman-Catholic, 1,5% Greco-Roman, 4,7% Reformists, 2,2% Baptistic und 1,8% Pentikostalic people. Economy and traffic The Mediterranean Sea influences the climate in Banat. The fruitful land, the sunny hills, the near forests, clay and grit are the natural treasure of the region. There are also cultivation of crops and wine. Lugoj is located on the two most important trunk roads: European street E 98 Bucuresti Timisoara and the highway DN 68 from Lugoj to Deva. Furthermore there is an important railroad junction on the connection of Bucuresti - Timisoara. In the past the city was characterised by crocker, tanner and other artisans and also agriculturists and winegrower. With the times added brick, textile and metal-working industry. After the chance new businesses and professions and a modern industry park came into being. Today of all ceramic, shoos and textile, toys, food and also high quality electronic systems are produced. Today there are 2,165 companies. 1,943 of them are registered as a Ltd. and 222 as a stock company, whereat 31 can be assigned to the commercial trade, 107 to the service sector and 1,927 to the trading sector. Of the currently 15,700 wage-earners about three quarters are working in the industry, 14% in the trade sector, 6% in the construction sector, 2% in the agriculture sector and 2% in administration.
