Skip Counting
Purpose of Strategy: Skip counting explicitly teaches students to use the hundreds board and the number line. Skip
counting is the precursor to multiplication so fluency is important. By touching the number while skip counting, students
make connections between the oral number pattern and the visual representation on both the hundred board and number
line.
Materials: Number line, Hundred Board
Steps:
1. Teacher provides student with hundred board or number line.
2. Student is directed to point to number and skip count by 2s.
3. Teacher repeats this process asking student to skip count using the number line.
4. Teacher and student discuss how the hundred board and the number line help the student to visualize the number
pattern.
5. Repeat steps by skip counting by 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s, and any other multiple that would help the
student with skip counting fluency.
