Our Commitment to Sustainability
We are a leader in providing sustainable solutions
for energy efficiency, productivity and comfort in the
environments in which people live and work, providing
products and services that conserve energy and preserve
natural resources for a sustainable future.
As a family-owned company, we’re proud of the Knauf
Insulation name and what it stands for. Customers
worldwide have put their trust in the quality, consistency
and performance of our products and our business values.
So, everyone who does business with us recognizes the
importance that, in our quest to become more sustainable,
there are certain principles that we will not compromise:
• The quality, consistency, and performance
characteristics for which our products are known.
• Our ability to apply technological advances across all
product lines.
• The safe and efficient manufacture of our products.
• Our goal of reducing emissions from plant operations.
• Our commitment to cost-effectively produce our products.
26
6
Driven by our mission and these principles,
we are proud to produce fiber glass
insulation with ECOSE® Technology.
ECOSE Technology is a revolutionary, more sustainable
binder technology born from five years of intensive
research and development.
ECOSE Technology features rapidly renewable bio-based
materials rather than non-renewable petroleum-based
chemicals such as phenol, formaldehyde and acrylics
commonly used in traditional fiber glass insulation products.
ECOSE Technology is formaldehyde free and
is validated by UL Environment. By reducing the
binder embodied energy associated with these petroleumbased chemicals, up to 70% compared to our traditional
fiber glass insulation binder, ECOSE Technology reduces
both the expected Global Warming Potential and
total embodied energy of Knauf Insulation products by
approximately 4%.
Our new LEED-NC Gold Engineering and
Development office building uses 30% less
energy than a conventional office while
accommodating 50 offices and housing a
126-seat classroom and training center.
Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers installed at
our Shasta Lake and Shelbyville plants have
reduced the amount of energy it takes to cure
our products and reduced CO2 emissions
from the curing ovens by up to 90%.
All Knauf Insulation products are made
from recycled, renewable and abundant
resources, such as ECOSE® Technology,
post-consumer recycled glass and sand.
Manufacturing improvements
• In our operations, we look for ways to advance our
glass formulations to increase the use of post-consumer
recycled bottle glass in all our products.
• To reclaim and reuse vented heat and to control emissions, we have invested millions of dollars in regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs) and the best available
control technology (BACT) for pollution control.
• By converting our products to ECOSE Technology, we
have eliminated chemicals like phenol and formaldehyde from the manufacturing process, eliminating their
plant emissions. This has an additional benefit of reducing cost instability associated with those chemicals.
Achieving LEED Gold as we help others do
the same
Our 24,860 square foot Engineering and Development
office building earned a New Construction Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-NC) Gold
certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and
uses 30% less energy than a conventional office building.
A sustainable impact and legacy
All our products are made from recycled, renewable and
abundant resources, such as post-consumer glass, ECOSE
Technology and sand. And we’re proud to be putting
glass bottles back to work rather than into landfills. Knauf
Insulation products now contain approximately 60% postconsumer recycled glass—about 26 million bottles each
month, all collected at curbside.
Our insulation products have an inherent impact on energy
consumption as they save hundreds of times more energy
in use than is required to manufacture them.
Through the development of revolutionary solutions like
ECOSE Technology, we continually focus our efforts on
providing solutions that reduce energy consumption and
save resources to positively affect the lives of people today
and tomorrow.

Ceilings/Attics
1
Cathedral Ceilings
To maximize R-value and maintain ventilation in
confined spaces, use high density R-38HD (10¼")
or R-30HD (8¼") Cathedral Ceiling Batts as a cost-effective alternative to larger ceiling joists.
2
Sloped Ceilings
With available space of 10" or more, use standard Knauf Insulation R-38 (12") or R-30 (10")
ceiling batts to insulate between and over framing
members. Batts won’t slide down slope, as loose-fill
insulation might.
3
Batted Attics
Install Knauf Insulation standard R-49 (133/4"),
R-38 (12") or R-30 (10") Ceiling Batts with integral
9
Blown Attic
Install Knauf Insulation Jet Stream Ultra Blowing
Insulation to achieve desired R-value (R-30 to R-60
and above). Install baffles or vent chutes to maintain proper ventilation.
5
Cantilevers
For bay windows, overhangs, cantilevers or floor
assemblies with less than 10" of available space,
install R-38HD (10¼"), R-30 (10"), R-26 (9") or
R-30HD (8¼")batts.
10
Protected Areas (over slab, or protected
crawlspaces)
Insulate floors over unheated, but protected
spaces, using Knauf Insulation R-19 (6¼") faced
insulation. Install kraft vapor retarder toward conditioned space, below plumbing and HVAC lines.
11
Unprotected Areas (floors over garages,
overhangs, cantilevers, or bays)
Use the maximum thickness the cavity space
will allow, using R-30HD (8¼"), R-26 (9"), R-30
(10"), R-38HD (10¼") or R-38 (12"). Kraft vapor
barrier should face conditioned space. Plumbing
and HVAC lines should not be installed in these
areas; if essential, install them above the insulation line.
Sound Conditioning
12
Sidewalls
6
Exterior Walls
Because exterior walls cannot be economically
retrofitted, it pays to maximize exterior sidewall
insulation during construction. Use faced insulation, or unfaced insulation. When installing Knauf
Insulation's unfaced batts, place between framing
members. The selection and positioning of an
appropriate vapor retarder, if required, should be
in accordance with local codes and practices. Use
R-15HD (3½"), R-13 (3½") for 2 x 4 framed walls.
Use R-21HD (5½"), R-23 (5½"),R-19* (6¼") for
2 x 6 framed walls.
8
10
Jet Stream® Ultra Blow-in-Blanket® System
Install Jet Stream Ultra to achieve an R-15 in 2 x 4
and an R-23 in 2 x 6 construction for a consistent
thermal and acoustical barrier throughout the
home. Fills gaps, tight corners and hard-to-reach
areas around pipes and fixtures.
Framed Basement Walls
Insulate framed basement walls with unfaced
insulation. Use R-13 (3½") or R-11 (3½") on
2 x 4 framed walls. When installing Knauf
Insulation's unfaced batts, place between framing
members. The selection and positioning of an
appropriate vapor retarder, if required, should be
in accordance with local codes and practices.
Interior Walls
Install R-13 (3½"), R-11 (3½") or R-8 (2½")
insulation in interior walls around baths, bedrooms and media rooms to limit room-to-room
noise transmission. Unfaced insulation can be
friction-fit in place, or kraft faced insulation*
can be stapled in place as needed.
*Kraft faced products must not be left exposed. Cover with
approved finish surface, such as gypsum board
13
Mechanical Rooms
Install unfaced R-13 (3½"), R-11 (3½") or R-8
(2½") insulation in walls surrounding
mechanical rooms and in cavities containing
plumbing lines, to absorb unwanted noise.
14
Interior Floors
Reduce floor-to-floor noise transmission by
installing R-19 (6¼"), R-13 (3½"), R-11 (3½")
or R-8 (2¼") insulation.
* When compressed to 5½", effective R-value = 17.8.
7
Drape exterior walls of crawlspace areas with
R-11 reinforced foil faced blanket or unfaced
R-11 batts, and separate 4 or 6 mil poly vapor
retarder. Always use 6 mil poly moisture barrier
on crawlspace floor.
Floors/Overhangs

Sealant
15
EcoSeal®
Apply EcoSeal to all vertical and horizontal
seams/joints in framing, moving sequentially
around each room. Apply to the seam between
the double plate at the top plate line and at the
junction between the bottom plate and subfloor.
Seal all other openings around electrical boxes,
junctions of wall studs and any other area where
air leakage could occur. For attics, seal drywall
joints and junctions of drywall to top plates,
working toward the center.
This example illustrates some of the ways to transform
a typical house into a comfort-conditioned home. The
strategies mentioned here have been designed for Zones

think of it as green . . .
only browner
EcoBatts® from Knauf Insulation do not look like any insulation
you’ve ever seen, but that’s because its natural brown color
represents a level of sustainability we’ve never before achieved.
The color comes from ECOSE® Technology, a revolutionary more
sustainable binder born from five years of intensive research.
Based on rapidly renewable bio-based materials rather than non-renewable petroleumbased chemicals, ECOSE Technology reduces binder embodied energy by up to 70%,
and does not contain phenol, formaldehyde, acrylics or artificial colors used to make
traditional fiber glass insulation.
New EcoBatt Insulation boasts exceptional quality and handling characteristics
that keep your installers happy and more productive—quick to recover, gutsy,
yet easy to cut and handle and has a pleasing natural installed appearance.
EcoBatt Insulation with ECOSE Technology, the next generation of sustainable
insulation…naturally from Knauf Insulation.

abundant renewable resources—sand—and at least 60% recycled bottle glass bonded with
ECOSE Technology. Knauf Insulation's ECOSE technology assures that no phenol, no formaldehyde, no acrylics or artificial colors are used to manufacture EcoBatt insulation.

Knauf Insulation EcoFill® Wx Blowing Insulation
One Weatherization Product for Attics & Sidewalls
Knauf Insulation EcoFill Wx blowing insulation ... one product to insulate
both attics and sidewalls, for use in weatherizing existing homes with little or
no insulation. When loose-fill insulation is dense-packed into wall cavities, it
becomes a tight barrier to the outside. Since it's packed snuggly inside the cavity,
air infiltration is not a problem.
When used in the attic, EcoFill Wx is spread over existing loose-fill insulation or
batts. Sidewall application is done either from the exterior or interior of the home,
drilling a hole in each wall cavity and filling it tightly with EcoFill Wx loose-fill
insulation.
EcoFill Wx doesn't settle. Period. That means if a cavity is blown with an R-value of
15, it will deliver permanent performance through the life of the home. EcoFill Wx
thoroughly fills gaps around pipes, wires and obstructions. It blows evenly and
consistently with low dust. Crews love it because it is clean—the usual side
effect of blowing cellulose is getting covered with it.
Knauf Insulation EcoFill Wx Insulation:
Better than Cellulose in so many ways
®
Superior R-value: R-15 vs. R-13
A higher R-value means better
performance.
Superior air flow resistance
Due to fine fiber size, dense-packed
fiber glass has superior air infiltration
resistance. Recent tests measuring the
weight of Knauf Insulation materials
show that Knauf Insulation loose-fill
insulation packs at 2.2 pounds per
cubic foot.
Higher productivity:
Your crews will use fewer bags on the
job! Using a 1500 square foot home as
an example, Knauf Insulation requires
44 fewer bags on the job than competitive material. This means less labor
through less material handling, less
storage space required and more jobs
on the truck. And your crews will like
it because it is much cleaner and less
dusty than cellulose.
Works with existing equipment
and process:
Regardless of the type of blowing
machine, fiber glass loose-fill works with
a 1¼" fill tube. It can be blown bottomup or top-down.
And fiber glass insulation does
not settle!
Cellulose at 100x
Fiber Glass at 100x
Photomicrographs of Fiber Glass and Cellulose at equal
magnification.
When seen at this magnification, it is easy to see how the shorter, finer fibers of fiber
glass bind together when they are dense-packed. The cellulose fibers are much more
varied in size and won’t pack well. That is why cellulose separates into dust.

ECOSE® Technology is a revolutionary
binder chemistry that makes Knauf
Insulation products even more
sustainable than ever. It is based on
rapidly renewable bio-based materials
rather than non-renewable petroleumbased chemicals traditionally used in
fiberglass insulation products. ECOSE
Technology reduces binder embodied
energy and does not contain phenol,
formaldehyde, acrylics or artificial colors.
Knauf Insulation building insulation acheived GREENGUARD Gold
Certification and is verified to be formaldehyde free.
GREENGUARD Gold SM
GREENGUARD Certification ProgramSM
Products are certified to GREENGUARD standards for low chemical
emissions into indoor air during product usage. For more
information, visit ul.com/gg.
Knauf Insulation has achieved a UL Environment claim validation
for 58.5% post-consumer recycled glass content in our insulation
products.
At Knauf Insulation, we manufacture a
wide variety of products that serve a
common goal, helping to make the most
of our planet’s energy resources. A familyowned global company, we understand
and are committed to high standards in
quality, performance and environmental
responsibility. Every step we take today
toward energy conservation helps ensure
better lives for generations to come.
