Welcome to the New York International Auto Show Education Week Worksheet—
the official starting pack to turn you from Auto Show rookie to automotive pro!
You’re going to need a pencil, a calculator, and a head full of your favorite cars.
So take notes, ask questions, and most importantly, have fun!
Choose any car at the New York International Auto Show. Determine how much square footage it
takes up on the show floor. How many models of this car would it take to cover the entire Javits
Center? (Hint: The Javits Center has a total floor area of 1,800,000 square feet.)
Find the approximate square footage of the car’s body by multiplying its length (in feet) by its width (in feet).
Then, divide 1,800,000 square feet by the approximate square footage of the car.

There are about 1,000 cars at the New York International Auto Show. What percentage are red, what
percentage are trucks, and what percentage are electric? (This may require some estimation.)
Use processes of estimation to determine the number of red vehicles, trucks, and electric cars at the Auto Show.
Once you’ve arrived at your estimations, divide each one by 1,000 (the approximate number of cars at the
New York International Auto Show). Your answers will be decimals. Multiply each value by 100 to find the
equivalent percentage.
You’re planning a road trip from the New York International Auto Show to San Francisco, Calif.
(Congratulations!) You can choose any car at the Auto Show to take you there. Traveling at an
average speed of 50 mph along the way, how long would it take you to complete your trip? Also,
based on your chosen car’s average fuel economy, about how many times would you have to stop
for gas? (Remember, there’s a difference between highway and city fuel economy.)
To calculate the length of your trip, you must divide the distance (in miles) from The New York International
Auto Show to San Francisco, Calif. (approximately 2,907 miles) by 50 miles per hour. This will give you the
approximate number of hours for your trip.
To answer the second part of this question, you will need to know the average fuel economy of the vehicle. You
can find this information on the Auto Show floor or by asking one of the manufacturer representatives. Since
you are traveling across the country, you can assume that the majority of your driving will be done on a highway.
So, for example, let’s assume that your car advertises a highway fuel economy of 24 miles per gallon, and has
a fuel-tank capacity of 12 gallons. You must divide the number of miles from the Auto Show to San Francisco,
Calif. by 24 miles per gallon, and then divide that number by 12 gallons. This will give you the number of full fuel
tanks you will need to complete the trip. However, you must subtract one from this value to account for the full
tank of gas at the start. This final answer is your total number of stops.
Assume that sales tax in New York State is 8%. Choose any SUV on the Auto Show floor. If you were to
purchase the base model of this vehicle, how much would you have to pay?
Take the price of the vehicle and multiply it by .08 (8%). Then, add that answer to the original price.
This gives you the total price after tax.
