www.ShaarieTorah.org 503.226.6131 June-July 2016 Iyar - Sivan/Tammuz 5776 What Can Judaism Do For Us? T here was a time when being Jewish meant doing things the way they had always been done. Jewishness was defined by how much of the old tradition you and your family upheld. Did you go to shul to pray? Did you keep kosher? Did you know some Hebrew? Did you eat traditional Jewish foods? As the Jewish world changes, those who consider themselves to be on the “inside” of Jewish life are anxious. The next generation does not use this same measure of Jewish identity. Sometimes people ask me “Why don’t young people care about coming to shul?” It looks to people sometimes like the next generation isn’t committed to the Jewish people, or to Jewishness. Young people don’t observe in the same numbers, they don’t pay membership dues in the same numbers, they don’t associate with the same Jewish institutions. In short, people conclude, they don’t care. I don’t think that such a perspective is hopeful or useful, either for the next generation of Jews or for the Jewish people as a whole. We live in a new Jewish era, where membership in a Jewish organization and a strong sense of connection to Jewish peoplehood is simply not sufficient to inspire people to involvement in Jewish life. This is a profoundly wonderful development. In an article in Ha’aretz this past February, the writer Ayalon Eliach reworked President Kennedy’s famous line in order to get us thinking about these changes in Jewish life: ask not what you can do for Judaism; ask what Judaism can do for you. That’s right: ask what Judaism can do for you. If the Jewish past does not have the same claim on the next generation—or on us, if we are being honest—as it once did, it is because our souls are hungering to find out what it is in Judaism that addresses the present need of our lives now. “show me why Judaism is relevant” people are demanding. “show me how it makes me better. How it makes the life in my community better. How it makes my world better.” In the world of the Jewish past, these impetuous demands might be seen as wrong headed or selfish. But in fact, it is simply the latest expression of the eternal energy of Torah and of Judaism. How can Judaism address the living demands of the Jewish present? If it does anything less than that, it is worthy of a museum and nothing more. This idea of “What can Judaism do for me” will be on our minds as we continue to develop the Jewish life of our shul. Of course we know that a Judaism simply built on taking and not contributing can’t (and shouldn’t) last. But Judaism must in the first place show us that it can inspire us to live our lives with greater passion, focus, meaning and goodness as we live the daily challenges of our lives in the modern world. Our shul now faces this challenge. We have to be able to answer yes to these questions: Can Judaism change me? Can it deepen our connection to one another? Can it guide us in caring for one another? Can it inspire us to make a tangible difference in our neighborhood and our City, to do acts of goodness and kindness? Can it make our hearts full and our hands busy as we face the world? I ask that you find your part in this building that we are doing together and that you find your place in creating a community that is vibrant and alive with Jewish values, lived in a way that brings honor to the Jewish past, present, and future. The flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, and it's lighter longer. It’s a sense of renewal, and a sense of new beginnings. Our synagogue needs your spring time awakening. Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer! Get involved with the Shaarie Torah family. There are committees to join, services to attend, and of course donations to give. Speaking of donations, if you want to sponsor an occasion, or an event please do so. Examples being Shabbat kiddishes, Torah study classes, education events, etc. Congratulations and thank you to Rabbi Rose, and the staff for the second night Passover Seder! There were at least 150 attendees who enjoyed the event. Now that passover has passed, let’s remember what’s coming: Shavuot. While Passover is a birth of a nation, Shavuot is the birth of Jewish Law. The time between the Exodus and the giving of the law was 49 days. Can you imagine the Congress of the United States enacting or passing a law in only 49 days! This would truly be a miracle. In the spirit of Spring and cleaning: there has been concerns about the condition of the Synagogue building and grounds. Sometimes, because of its almost daily use, the building seems unattended. Some people have suggested we have a Mitzvah Day, not a "mitzvah moment," when we ask for a donation—but a day when as many people as possible get together and clean the building and the parking lot.; but a day in which as many people as possible get together and clean the building and the parking lot. We can do this once a quarter, or even once a month. An invitation for such a day will be out soon, but if you know you're interested now, contact the office and let us know at: [email protected]; (503) 226-6131. Thank you to the Sisterhood, for their successful Hamentaschen baking event. They baked a record amount of product, which will translate into a major future contribution to the shul. As always, there was much fun to be had baking downstairs with all of the great volunteers! Of course, if you missed your dose of Hamentaschen this year, the dates for next year's project are ready for your calendar: Feb. 16 - Mar. 8, 2017 Don’t forget the Men’s Club event to be held this year on June 26th. This event is the Harry Nemer service award. This year’s honoree is Shelly Klapper. The award is given each year to a person or persons who went above and beyond the call of duty in service to our Shaarie Torah family. Have a great summer, and remember, your participation at daily minyans would be greatly appreciated. Shalom, Phil Cohen Farwell to Sarah Dishner A special thanks to Sarah Dishner for all the work she has done as both Bookkeeper and Synagogue Administrator. After all, it happens in June when the school year comes to an end. In actuality, Shavuot is the second of the shalosh regalim, the pilgrimage holiday. Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. Biblically, the Jewish year starts in the month of Nisan, with the holiday of Passover, and signifies our physical freedom. Shavuot, the second holiday, is all about our spiritual freedom. We are becoming one people, and one nation Judaism is born. Shavuot, a holiday that is symbolized by the receiving of the Ten Commandments, is establishing the parameters of relationships. Relationships to oneself, between people, family members, siblings, and ultimately between us and our creator. The word for relationship in Hebrew is yachasim,םיסחי. Some of you may know the Yiddish word yechus (used often when arrange marriages take place) which means pedigree. The way you build a relationship demonstrates your pedigree. Doesn't that adds to your understanding of the value of building an honest and productive relationship?! This year on Saturday, June 11th, we will do just that! Together we will climb the mountain of relationships and improve on our pedigree! We will hear, learn and discuss what are best practices for having ever-lasting positive relationships with those we love and those we must get along with. We will learn how to love ourselves and how it can manifest with a love of HaShem, our God! I invite all of you to come and join us in this special Tikun Liel Shavuot! Nemer Service Award, Shelly Klapper. Shelly exemplifies the true meaning of volunteering, giving of his time and energy for many years to Shaarie Torah. Shelly continues his involvement in numerous fundraising projects benefitting all of us at the synagogue along with countless hours, over the years, of “behind the scenes” volunteer work. The award dinner is June 26, 2016. Tickets are now available online or through the office. Sponsorship levels are also available. We invite you to come celebrate and honor this leader in our community at this fun-filled gala evening! Please see the flyer on the next page for more information. The Men’s Club experienced a very busy April and May beginning with the planning for the June 26th dinner honoring Shelly. On April 9th, the Men’s Club hosted a Texas Hold’Em Tournament. The tournament boasted 30 plus players with the top prize a $300.00 prepaid Visa card. Gary Weiner and Geoffrey Strongin co-chaired this fun event. We plan to make this a yearly event. Pickles are coming. The Men’s Club is going into the pickle business. We plan to put up the pickles in August and sell them at $8.00 a jar in September. If anyone is interested in donating (new) wide-mouth pickling jars please contact Steph Kotkins. The Men’s Club agreed to sponsor the food for the Congregation Shaarie Torah annual meeting again this year. The annual meeting is very important and we encourage everyone to attend. The Men’s Club, recognized as a religious, social and service auxiliary organization of our congregation, fills a vital role in synagogue life. The health and vitality of every synagogue depends on an active Men’s Club and Sisterhood to attract new members. Synagogues without these active organizations tend to stagnate and lack energy. Synagogue members are not required to join the Men’s Club. For more information regarding the Men’s Club, please contact the synagogue office and I will personally contact you on the club’s behalf.
