Issue 7 - December 2016
SENIOR PRIZEGIVING 2016
CONGRATULATIONS
(Poxime Accessit) Madeleine Currie, (Guest Speaker) Chelsea Takle, (Principal) Mrs Sue Hume and
(Dux) Amy Palmer
The Avonside Girls’ High School Senior Prizegiving was held in the Transitional Cathedral on Tuesday 8 November
and provided the opportunity to recognise the high academic achievements of senior students. As well, some key
sports and arts awards were presented.
Board Chair, Ms Monica Davis presented her report, as did Principal, Mrs Sue Hume. Guest speaker, old girl Chelsea
Takle spoke about her career journey since leaving school, and the 13 key pieces of advice I am sure, will resonate
with the leavers as they embark on life beyond school.
The announcement of our top scholars for 2016 brought the evening to an end. Dux of Avonside Girls’ High School for
2016 is Amy Palmer, who achieved subject prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, French and received special awards
for Senior Leadership and Service and Form Leader. Amy was also awarded the Hugh Rankin Education Trust
Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in the Sciences.
Proxime Accessit is Madeleine Currie who gained subject prizes in Biology, Geography and History and received
special awards for Senior Leadership and Service and a prize for Research.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Kia ora tatou
We are almost at the end of
our very busy school year
and, perhaps like many of
you, find ourselves
expressing wonder at how
quickly yet another year is
coming to an end.
While we are busy with all the end-of-year activities and
ceremonies, we should also take time to reflect on what
has been achieved.
We have another cohort of students ready to leave and
access opportunities beyond school, and we feel
excitement for them while knowing that we shall miss their
presence in our school. The leadership they have shown is
a great example for our next cohort of final year students
who next year will not only have the traditional leadership
roles available to them, but the very strong expectation of
every senior student being a leader within their whanau
group and house.
We are almost at the stage of signing all of our senior
students out of school for the year, with the conclusion of
NCEA external assessments imminent. Our senior girls
have embraced opportunities to learn and achieve, with
most responding appreciatively to the increasingly
personalised approach to assessment and making good
progress towards their goals.
We have continued to work at enhancing girls’ learning
experiences – aiming to embed our vision for learning so
that it is not a document that remains aspirational but one
that is real and alive in classrooms every day. We shall
continue this work in 2017, seeking learning experiences
for our students that are empowering, that are based on
great relationships, that encourage deep learning and that
may be connected to other learners or learning within or
beyond the school. Our prototyping of more flexible
learning spaces continues, and we hope to have three sets
of classrooms modified and more classes and teachers
therefore able to experience more collaborative learning
experiences in 2017.
Learning with digital technologies is an integral part of
being an empowered and connected learner. From five
digital classes in our junior school we shall increase to
eleven in 2017, as all Year 9 students are expected to
bring a device for learning. While a device is simply a tool,
it is a tool that unlocks a whole new way of engaging with
classroom learning. It is a tool girls will be expected to use
in their studies and employment beyond school, and so we
believe that girls need to acquire the skills to do that. In
addition to Year 9, any girl from Year 10 -13 may bring her
own device for learning in any class, and we strongly
encourage her to do so.
Finally, our wellbeing review was extensive and has
resulted in some significant structural and timetable
changes for 2017. We want to support girls’ connection to
and engagement in school, and to support and monitor
their pathway and progress through school. We believe we

A uniform consultation conducted recently, indicated
support to renew and refresh our uniform. Feedback
enabled us to develop a brief, so last week four potential

details in the new year.

Recently we had an unwelcome reminder of the
earthquakes that we experienced a few years ago. While it
appears the impact on Christchurch has been limited
Kaikoura and the surrounding environs and Wellington
have borne the brunt and our thoughts are with those who
have been affected.
Our school stood up well to the quake and I want to thank
Mrs Hume, who was in her office at 6am on 14 November
and her team for all of the work they did in those early
hours to assess the situation, the buildings and plan our
response. The school closure did affect the first day of
NCEA examinations. However things have been more
settled since then.
We were expecting to be reviewed by the Education
Review Office (ERO) ERO this year but this is now likely to
occur in 2017. At the time of their last review in 2013 they
commented “ERO is confident that the board and senior
leaders have an ongoing focus on improving learning and
wellbeing outcomes for students.”
This is as true today as it was then, thanks to the excellent
work of the whole school team. We are confident the
review will go well.

Construction of new QEII Recreation and Sport Centre to start in December
An important milestone in the redevelopment of QEII Park was announced this week, with the Christchurch City Council
naming Apollo Projects Ltd as the builder of the new QEII Recreation and Sport Centre. Work is scheduled to start
onsite next month.
The centre, which is expected to open in mid-2018, will include leisure and training pools, as well as a hydroslide, water
adventure playground, steamroom and sauna, fitness centre and a café.
It will of course be a busy period of construction at QEII Park, with construction of our two new schools set to begin in
2017. The new QEII Recreation and Sport Centre, together with the modern facilities our new schools will offer the
community, will be a fabulous asset for the east of Christchurch.
We are looking forward to January 2019 when our schools will open alongside the new centre.

INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT
We can’t believe the year is nearly over. We are saying
farewell to many students in the next few weeks but we
have some who are staying, so they will enjoy a Kiwi
summer break. Mikuru has been with us for two years
and has completed Level 2 & 3 in that time. She will be
heading back to Japan in January as she has been
accepted at one of the top universities in Japan. She has
worked very hard and we are proud of her. We will be sad
to see her go but wish her all the best for her
future. Mikuru, Yumika and Jeeyeon all received awards
at our Senior prize giving this month. We are very proud of
their achievements.
Pink Walk to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer
We took part in the Pink Walk to raise awareness and
funds for Breast Cancer. The students really embraced the
pink look! We also volunteered at the SPCA to help set up
their Annual Street Appeal.
Our senior students who didn’t sit NCEA examinations are
kept busy with volunteer work and activities for a
month. Our Wellington trip couldn’t go head due to the
earthquakes so we had to do a quick change of plans. Our
girls and two students from Shirley Boys’ High enjoyed a
day at Rubicon Valley. They jet boated, had a go at
shearing a sheep and saw farm life. We volunteered at the
SPCA and helped with community tree planting. We met
up with other international students at Halswell Quarry for
a picnic and also went ice skating.

TEDx Christchurch 2016
Four students attended TEDx Christchurch 2016 on Saturday 28
October. They were entertained and energized by a wide range of
speakers on topics from Astrophysics to New Zealand becoming
predator free, what it means to be a citizen today and how scientists can
predict a particular type of earthquake.
The Master of Ceremonies was Jesse Mulligan and there was plenty of
delicious food and coffee supplied throughout the day.
Many thanks to the Wayne Francis Charitable Trust for providing the
tickets for the students and Ms Lynch to attend.

A big thank you to Tony Sheard at the

ongoing support of the E-velocity projects
including supplying numerous bikes for
the girls to use in the construction of their
electric vehicles. Thanks to Gary

collect the bikes once a week and
delivered them to school.
Joining the Dots Competition Success
Sally Wylaars and Dakota Hewison (10JS) and Megan Rossiter and
Taylor-Maree Allen (10FI) collaborated to produce an entry for the
Joining the Dots Competition. Their entry won second place in the
secondary school’s category. They created a sand art movie clip to
highlight that climate change is not just about the environment.
The students learned about the climate through the lens of a specific
government agency and about government through the lens of climate
change. Their movie clip demonstrated that rising sea levels as a result
of polar ice cap melt from climate change may impact on New
Zealand’s Ministry of Immigration. People in the Republic of Kiribati
may be forced to flee their homeland and head to safe haven
in NZ. Immigration authorities may have to prepare to find homes,
employment and the necessities of life for these climate change refugees.

Avonside, their experiences at the Olympic Games and
both delivered inspirational messages to our students
about the hard work and effort that goes into training.
Both athletes presented awards to our current cohort of
sportwomen. In typical Kiwi style. They were extremely
humble about their amazing achievements. It was an
amazing afternoon and we were honoured to welcome
back Chloe who completed in the skeet shooting and Olivia
who is a member of the Black Sticks hockey team. Both
continue to compete on the international sporting stage.

Three Day Business Challenge
Recently 80 year 10 students were
involved in the three-day Business
Challenge run by the Young Enterprise
Trust. This was held in the school library
and involved students working as
‘business teams’ to come up with a
business plan to solve an everyday
issue in our society. The ‘teams’
appointed a CEO, Marketing Manager,
Accountant etc to run their business venture and were mentored by the two
Young Enterprise presenters.
The three days were full of planning, discussing, researching and laughter as
each ‘team’ produced their plan ready for presenting on the last day. Many of
the girls dressed up in business attire for the final day’s presentations which
were held in front of judges brought in from the business community. All of the
girls involved in this Business Challenge should feel very proud of themselves as they all worked extremely well together
and produced amazing products/concepts. The skills learnt will be beneficial for all involved and will hopefully open the
mind to more innovative thinking.
Year 10 Dance Concert
On Thursday 1st December, two Year 10 Dance classes presented a concert of their years’ work. The concert was
performed in the gymnasium which was beautifully decorated. They were all encouraged to perform three dances. Hip
hop, contemporary, Hawaiian, Samoan, aerobic dance, swing and Kpop were all demonstrated. A lot of the work was
choreographed by the students. About 45 students performed to an audience of over 100. The students have gained a
great deal of confidence during the year and this was demonstrated through this performance.
No Lights, No Lycra
The dance department has been holding a No Lights, No Lycra lunchtime dance every week this term. This is held in the
Drama room which is pitch black. The girls spend half an hour dancing however, they wish as no one can see or judge
them. Its been very popular and a good fitness activity. We will continue this next year.
Old Girls Fundraiser
Members of he Old Girls prepared a wonderful lunch for the Bed and
Breakfast Club to raise money for the school to buy a van. The lunch
consisted of a five course meal. They were thrilled to have the help
of four of our Year 11 students; Jessica Bowman, Alex BlackburnWood, Georgia Cartwright, and Sarah-Lee Nel who served, washed
dishes and were wonderful representatives of the school.
