IN SYMPATHY: Please remember in your prayers
Bonfilio Luna who died this past week. He was the father
of Felipe Luna of Good Shepherd. Also remember,
Dottie Stipes of Richmond who has died. She was the
sister of Peggy Dunagan of Good Shepherd . May God
the Father welcome Bonofilio and Peggy into his
heavenly kingdom and grant peace to their families.
FLOWERS: The flowers in the Sanctuary this weekend
are in memory of Justin Malena. They were donated by
his parents Laura and Walter Malena. Thank you for
remembering Justin with this floral tribute as we give
thanks to God for the gift of life and the promise of the
Ressurection.

enriched with extras such as Spanish, Art, and
Music, our students are blessed to participate in daily
prayer, weekly Mass, religion classes, service
learning, and many other opportunities to grow in
their faith.
Our school families & staff appreciate the support
our parishioners offer!
Come visit us at Open House Feb. 26
from 11:45am-1:30pm.

TUITION
ASSISTANCE AT GOOD SHEPHERD SCHOOL:
We will have a second special collection THIS
SUNDAY January 28/29 to help fund our tuition
assistance program. Our hope is that cost will never
keep a parish family from choosing the gift of a Catholic
education for their child. Please help as you can.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FREE THROW: The
2017 Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition will
be held THIS Sunday, January 29th in the Good
Shepherd Elementary School Gym. This competition is
open to boys and girls ages 9 thru 14 as of January 1,
2017. Competition is free and prizes are awarded.
Separate competition is held for boys and girls of every
age. Proof of age is requested. Registration begins at
2:00 pm. Competition begins at 2:30PM. Winners
advance to district competition. For additional info or
questions call Alan Hamilton 695-7290.
(thanks continued…) creating the ornaments, setting up
and decorating the trees, helping sort the gifts,
organizing the gifts for pickup, helping load the gifts at
pick-up, and fielding phone calls in the parish office.
There are too many people to mention by name but
without their help, the Giving Tree would not have been
possible. Thanks to all and God bless!
Giving Tree true stories 2017: On Jan. 7th while waiting
in line for some food, Janet ran up to one of our
members and showed off her new Nike shoes she
received for Christmas from one of our parishioners.
She loved the bright colors and said she had never
owned a pair of Nike shoes. Also, Mary expressed her
excitement in receiving a beautiful, warm comforter for
her bed. She said she never expected to receive such a
nice gift. Thank you Good Shepherd!

THANKS : St. Vincent de Paul once again sponsored
the Giving Tree for 2016 Christmas season. The Giving
Tree gives our congregation a chance to help those in
our community who are less fortunate. As in the past,
Good Shepherd parishioners were VERY GENEROUS!
In all, we were able to make the Christmas holiday more
joyful for 78 families, which included 228 adults and
264 children! That is close to 800 gifts! Thanks to all
who took an ornament from the trees and made
someone’s Christmas morning a little brighter.
We would also like to thank the many helpful hands that
assisted in making this event possible; from helping with
the initial sign-ups in November, (continued…)

The assembly is invited to bring a candle
to be blessed at Mass on Thursday, 8am.
From the USCCB (http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-andteachings/vocations/consecrated-life/world-day-for-consecratedlife.cfm):
In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer
for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is
attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February
2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day on
which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of
the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the
light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World Day
for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order
to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church.
Prayer for Consecrated Persons
God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to
serve in your Son’s Kingdom as sisters, brothers, religious priests,
consecrated virgins, and hermits, as well as members of Secular
Institutes. Renew their knowledge and love of you, and send
your Holy Spirit to help them respond generously and
courageously to your will. We ask this through our Lord Jesus
Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The assembly is invited to have their
throats blessed at Mass on Friday, 12pm.
From Loyola Press, the publisher of Findin God and Our Catholic
Identity—the texts used for our REP and Adult Formation programming
(http://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/saints/saints-storiesfor-all-ages/saint-blase):
If you are already familiar with St. Blaise, it is probably because of the
blessing of throats—a Catholic custom on his feast.
According to tradition, Blaise had been a doctor before he was
ordained a priest. He became the bishop of Sebaste (now in central
Turkey). During a period of persecution, he fled to a cave where he
lived as a hermit. It is said that he cured and tamed the wild animals
there. One day hunters discovered him and took him to the governor,
who sentenced him to be tortured and killed.
About four hundred years after his death, many stories began to be
told about Blaise, and he became a popular saint, especially in France
and Germany. One legend says that while Blaise was in prison, a
mother brought him her small boy, who was choking on a fishbone
stuck in his throat. Blaise prayed over the child, and he was healed.
Every year on St. Blaise's feast, two candles tied with ribbon in the
shape of an X are used to bless throats. In the prayer the Church prays
that those blessed may be delivered from diseases of the throat and
from every other illness. Candles are used because of another story: It
is said that while Blaise was kept in a dark prison, a woman secretly
brought him some candles and food.
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
Baptisms, First Reconciliation, First Holy
Communion, Confirmation, and Marriage, require
preparation before entering life in the Sacraments. First
Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation,
all require a minimum of one year of religious education
before one year of sacramental preparation can begin.
Please contact Laura, contact info above, for more info.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
WALK TO BETHLEHEM UPDATE: We continue to
inch closer to Bethlehem. Last week we collectively
walked another 110 miles, which puts us between Madrid
and the French border. Très bien! In last week's Gospel
reading, Jesus called his first 4 disciples: Peter, Andrew,
James and John, inviting them to walk with him, become
fishers of men, and spread the good news. Our Lord
recognized the value of companionship, and last weekend
at 2 of our weekend Masses we sang the song
"Companions on the a Journey," which says, "We are
companions on the journey, breaking bread and sharing
life; and in the love we bear is the hope we share for we
believe in the love of our God." As you walk the road to
Bethlehem, do you walk with a companion, or do you go it
alone? Consider inviting someone to walk with you, and as
you walk, say a prayer for the lonely and forgotten. Thank
God for the ability to walk and bring the good news of
Jesus to others, which is ultimately our calling. Thank God
for His companionship and the companionship of the
many others in our lives. We are in this together.
