RIMS OFFICIAL CONFERENCE COVERAGE | MONDAY, APRIL 24 Serving Up Hope CRAWFORD ® by Josh Salter “Fighting cancer one cup at a time” is the mantra of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), the chosen charity for this year’s RIMS 2017 Community Service Day Project, sponsored by ESIS. The foundation was created in the memory of young cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott who started a lemonade stand to raise money to find a cure for all children with cancer. That small plan set by a four-year old has become a national charity that has raised more than $140 million toward fulfilling her dream. Each year, RIMS supports a charity with ties to the Annual Conference’s host city, and calls upon attendees to help give back. “Who we are is not solely defined by our professional accomplishments, but, also, personal qualities that certainly include generosity and compassion,” said RIMS CEO Mary Roth. “While the world’s risk management community gathers in Philadelphia for the Society’s Annual Conference, it is important for us to take a moment and give back to the community that has embraced us. Alex’s Lemonade Stand is a wonderful charity with a truly noble mission and we are so proud to make it a part our event.” Located throughout the convention center, the stands will give risk professionals the chance to refresh and contribute to the cause. Proceeds from lemonade sales will benefit the nonprofit’s array of services that See Hope page 17. He recently spoke about RIMS’ global expansion and some of the specific activities and components fueling that initiative. “The economies in these regions have enormous potential for growth and are currently expanding at a greater rate than mature markets in the Western world.” Q: What is driving the international expansion for RIMS? A: Global trade is expanding. Many of our North American members have a significant global presence and need to understand the practice of risk management in other countries. There is a considerable global presence in our membership already. Not only is there a clear and growing recognition of the value and importance of effective risk management, there’s also greater understanding of the elements and terminology involved in the risk management practice. This has resulted in an enormous increase in demand for the educational tools, thought leadership and resources RIMS can provide. Q: W hy is there a need for greater resources in these emerging economies? A: The economies in these regions have enormous potential for growth and are currently expanding at a greater rate than mature markets in the Western world. As these emerging markets mature and adopt common business practices that are recognized globally, it’s not surprising that they would also want to embrace risk management as an effective business practice. Demand is also driven by regulatory needs. In India, for example, government regulators have seen the need and are requiring some industries to demonstrate that they have a risk management program and a chief risk officer in place. Q: What are some of RIMS’ more recent and notable efforts on the expansion front? A: In 2016, we sent a delegation to China and more recently, in February, members of RIMS RIMS 2017—Support the Spencer Educational Foundation! Text SPENCER to 444999 today. leadership and staff visited India. The purpose, in both cases, was first to gain a broader understanding of the state of risk management and its practice by connecting with practitioners operating in these countries. It was also important to learn about their potential needs and their level of interest in connecting with the international risk management community. We connected with various post-secondary educational institutions, key players in risk management, government regulators and other associations as well. In India, this included the Institute of Directors, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and the Institute of Corporate Secretaries. We have more international events scheduled for later this year, with a RIMS Risk Forum for Australasia in Sydney in August; a RIMS Risk Forum for Latin America in Mexico City in November; a RIMS Risk Forum for the Middle East in Dubai in December and a RIMS Risk Forum for China tentatively planned for September. Q: What resources are most in demand abroad? A: Education tools and resources are always a priority internationally and we found that global certifications rank high as well. In India and China particularly, there is a very strong interest in the RIMS-CRMP certification and how education will help people achieve the level of knowledge needed to pass that certification. Another tool also garnering interest is the RIMS Risk Maturity Model, which allows those in emerging regions to compare their enterprise risk management programs objectively with other entities worldwide. 3 the last time anyone Got flood information this reliable, he built an ark. RIMS OFFICIAL CONFERENCE COVERAGE | MONDAY, APRIL 24 FRESH FROM RIMS RIMS Professional Report Focus: A Risk Management Guide to Reservation of Rights Organizations Realize Value of Insurance by Implementing Swift and Informed Responses to Reservation of Rights Letters by Brandon Righi Understanding, anticipating and properly responding to reservation of rights letters is integral to risk professionals’ ability to protect their organizations and realize the full value of insurance policies, according to a new RIMS Professional Report, A Risk Management Guide to Reservation of Rights. Developed by members of the RIMS Standards and Practices Council, the report guides risk professionals in understanding the potential implications that reservation of rights letters pose. The report explains the background of these notifications and discusses what to consider when deciding if, when and how to respond. It includes examples of reservation of rights and response letters, while exploring issues regarding claim limitations, communications strategies, litigation and potential conflicts of interest. “It may be surprising when a claim is reported, and an insurer sends the policyholder a reservation of rights letter, potentially limiting coverage,” said RIMS Vice President of Strategic Initiatives Carol Fox. “Knowledgeable and prepared risk professionals can make all the difference in getting the full value from an organization’s insurance policies.” A Risk Management Guide to Reservation of Rights report is available in hard-copy at the RIMS Hub, booth 1427 in the Marketplace Exhibit Hall, and in digital format in the RIMS Risk Knowledge library at www.RIMS.org/RiskKnowledge. ABSIP Scholar Amanda Bill, a senior at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, shared her initial thoughts about the profession and her future in it. “Being able to develop relationships and to communicate effectively is so important and will definitely translate well into the workplace.” Q: What is it about risk management that grabbed your attention and made you decide to study it? A: M y sister-in-law—a graduate of UNC Charlotte’s Risk Management Program—thought it would be a great fit for me because it aligned with my organic way of thinking, how I naturally thought about the world. She’s right. I love that it’s analytical and also practical. t the end of the day, everyone needs insurA ance. I love how the industry is so expansive and gives us the opportunity to travel, immerse ourselves in different cultures and see just how our work impacts different markets around the world. Q: What have you learned about the risk management profession? A: R isk professionals are smart. I didn’t realize how experienced they really are. It’s been an amazing advantage as a college student who is about to enter the workforce to learn from so many incredibly smart and passionate professionals. Through my internship, I’ve also noticed that in the profession there is mobility and the flexibility to work and interact with high-level executives. They want to talk to us. It’s been humbling to see just how receptive this industry is to younger talent. RIMS 2017—Support the Spencer Educational Foundation! Text SPENCER to 444999 today. Q: What skills do you think are crucial for you to be a successful risk professional? A: W ork ethic is going to be so important and it’s not necessarily working all hours of the night but it’s working efficiently. As a resident advisor on campus, I live and communicate with different people, from different backgrounds, with different interests. Being able to develop relationships and to communicate effectively is so important and will definitely translate well into the workplace. Finally, I’ll need to remain inquisitive and know I can’t be complacent. Complacency is a killer. Being inquisitive, continuously learning and asking questions will allow me to move forward in my career. Q: What are you most excited about here at RIMS 2017? A: M y classmate Sydney Simpson who is also an Anita Benedetti scholar and I are excited to travel to Philadelphia together, to learn about the industry and connect with students who share similar interests and academic goals. I’m also looking forward to Spencer’s 5K FunRun.
