Built by the International Canadian Academy of Sports Excellence (iCASE) and the Avon Maitland District School Board, it is the first Academy to combine rigorous baseball training with a full time academic education for high school students in grades 9 through 12. On The Field This first semester program involves 220 hours of on-field training plus 75 sport-specific classroom hours. The team’s field manager and GM is baseball veteran Tom Valcke. Tom’s baseball career spans more than 25 years and includes running Baseball Canada, coaching Team Canada, scouting for the Toronto Blue Jays, and establishing the Major League Baseball (MLB) Central Scouting Bureau throughout Canada. Tom has taught baseball in 22 countries, has run numerous international championships and was a Commissioner for Baseball at the 2008 Beijing Sumer Olympic Games. iCASE trains on the field, or in their 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art indoor facility that includes video analysis to help the student-athletes improve their mechanics. The Fall 2014 schedule (see back) will see iCASE play in seven tournaments in five different states and will culminate with participation in the MLB Fall Showcase giving our players maximum exposure to USA college and pro scouts. In the Classroom Academic life is centered at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School - a renowned school within the Avon Maitland District School Board that combines a customized iCASE academic program with modern full weight training facilities, two campus baseball fields and large gymnasiums. By way of broad and specialized sport-centered curriculum, University and College level courses and a large selection of Technological courses taught by teachers with Provincial and National recognitions, students are well positioned on the path to reaching their potential and career choice. iCASE participants will be offered a specialized program that will include an emphasis on sports and nutrition, athletic portfolio development, sport leadership and personal marketing. To fuel academic and training goals, members of the Academy will also be provided a nutritious lunch suited to athletic conditioning at Stratford Northwestern’s Screaming Avocado - a featured cafe on the Food Network’s series ‘Fink.
