The Francophonie Week

Doing a presentation in
English comparing two
films , we have been
investigating how social
issues change over time.
At the International Codrington school, we celebrated the week of the Francophonie where French language is celebrating all over the
world. The French speaking world is composed of more than 50 countries and counts around 274 million speakers worldwide.
So what happened in PYP?
MYP4 and 5 students went to PYP 1 to PYP 8 and explained to them what the Francophonie World looked like with a focus on a particular
country. Then, they gave them a short introduction to the language itself. It was so great to see so much enthusiasm from PYP students.
PYP 3 for example was singing along the French song after only few minutes.
So what happened in MYP?
MYP 1 to MYP 5 students have put a great exhibition to celebrate French around the World with one focus: sharing their knowledge with
their peers. The exhibition is on the Language floor above the administration. You are all welcome to come and visit until Tuesday 24th of
March.

TCS Principal – Mr. Darryl
Greetings from a slightly chilly and wet east coast.
We have completed the penultimate week of Term 2 and are nearly at the Easter break.
Next week with be the usual hectic last week as student’s complete summatives and reports are issued. We also have a number of students
participating in the BSSAC (Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Competition) Athletics championship; the DP 2 art Exhibition; a couple of
teachers and 11 students off to the Scottish Highlands; and our “Baywatch brigade” having successfully completed the Bronze Medallion with
the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada (RLSSC) now embarking on the Bronze Cross to name but a few.
I would like to take a moment to thank all parents, teachers, students, board members and faculty who have participated in our PYP self-study to
date. There are a few more meetings next week. The feedback we gather from these stakeholders is crucial for us to gauge where we are in
terms of the PYP and where we need to go. The results from these focus group meeting will feed directly into the evaluation report and our
action plan for the next 5 year.
Also spare a thought for the DP 2’s who will (hopefully!!) spend the break with their heads in their books preparing as thoroughly as possible for
the IB exams proper which begin in May. This is the culmination of their two year courses before they head off to Universities around the globe.
It is obviously an exciting, nervous, stressful, and tense time for them all as they prepare for their final challenges in Secondary education. Easy it
never is, but with thorough preparation we are confident that they will all do us proud.
Have a great weekend
TCS Heads of School -
Miss Vicky and Miss Janet
Dear Parents & Guardians,
It was lovely to see so many of you at the ‘Lancaster Lau’ last Friday evening, on behalf of the Secondary School we would like to thank the PTA and all at Lancaster for an
amazing evening! On the theme of last weekend you will remember from my words last week that the National Schools’ Music Festival 2015 finals took place. 42 schools
competed and the standard was extremely high! Valentine (MYP 4) was the only student to introduce herself to the audience – in French and English! The local crowd
really appreciated that gesture, they also acknowledged her amazing vocal talent as she sang Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’. Branden (MYP 4) also delivered an equally
mesmerizing solo piano performance of Yann Tiersen’s ‘Comptine d’un autre Ete’. I was extremely proud of them both, in fact, all of us are. Thank you to Ms. Chrystal for the hard work
that she put in to making sure that the students’ talents were heard on this national stage and The Codrington School’s name was ‘out there’.
Wednesday saw Mr. Darryl take (our very own) 2014-15 BEF’s $20 challenge ‘Excellence in Strategic Planning & Execution Champions’ and ‘Overall Champion’ to the offices of Mr. David
Noel (Managing Director of Scotia Bank Caribbean East). Sasha & Mia and Amber (MYP 5) went to meet Mr. Noel so that Scotia c ould formally recognize the girls’ social entrepreneurship
efforts and achievements in this year’s BEF’s $20 challenge. As you will know the girls’ businesses were two of three that made the most for charity/community projects in Barbados this
year. There will be coverage of their meeting in The Nation. Again we are so proud of Sasha, Mia and Amber!
Thursday and Friday of this week has seen some of our MYP students competing at the BSSAC (Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Competition) with Ms. Kim. We will make sure that
we have a full review of the events and how we did for next week’s TCS Focus; as we go to press we know that Suresh (MYP 3) has made both the semi-finals of the Under 15 100 and 200
metres. AMAZING NEWS. These championships show case some ‘major’ talent and for one of our own to make the semi-finals is wonderful. Fingers crossed that Suresh will make the
finals in both his categories.
Please remember that the DP 2 Art Exhibition will take place this Sunday 22nd March, as I said last week much has gone in to preparing for this occasion, so I hope you will come along to
see the ‘fruits of their labour’, so again I look forward to seeing you there. Thank you to Ms. Carla for spear heading this celebration and event.
Have wonderful family and friend time this weekend.
All the best, Ms. Vicky
Dear Parents and Guardians.
Thanks go out to all the parents who have participated on the PYP steering committees over the last two weeks. We have two committees (assessment, organization) left to
meet next week, which will complete our self-study of the school before the break. Our follow-up challenge will be to take the data from the surveys and create action plans
for the school.
Several classes took on field trips this week; PYP8 slipped out to the Aquaponics farm and PYP5 went to the Andromeda gardens. The eggs hatched in Mr. Ryan’s room this providing
opportunities for all the classes to do internal field trips and the children to take several supervised mini visits over the breaks. Ms. Carla also took the opportunity to have her PYP8
students draw the chicks during the art block. Many great pictures emerged. Friday afternoon we belatedly celebrated the International Math Day with activities and competitions.
Thanks go out to Ms. Holly for organizing these opportunities.
Benchmark reports were sent out to you, please email the teacher if you have any questions related to these reports. The signup link was also sent out this week for the April 13th
conferences. Please let the staff know if you are not able to come and need another date. The specialists will also be available on the 13th. If you would like to meet with them, please
send them emails as they also have MYP commitments.
All the Best, Janet

"Our MYP production this year is Macbeth. We needed props and backgrounds for the play.
Ms.Nicola and Ms.Olga both agreed it would be a great idea to make our own sets using people
who have good understanding of technology materials and Mr. Martin let us use time in lessons
to work on the set. We divided ourselves into 2 groups, people who drew the set, and the people who would paint. Our tech skills came in when painting and designing. For example, to create a straight line when painting is pretty hard as the brush folds and the paint gets everywhere
so instead we taped the edges where we didn't want the paint to go. We then painted that area
and when the paint was dry we took off the tape, revealing a
smooth straight line. Anyway, we all can't wait for the production and we can't wait to see how the backgrounds look while
we perform!" Valentine Meniaud
