Reconciliation Action Plan - Torrens Valley Christian School

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Reconciliation Action Plan
27 October, 2016
Term Four: Week Two
“Here in Australia we are fortunate enough to have one of the richest
and oldest continuing cultures in the world. This is something we should
be proud of and something we should celebrate. The youth of Australia
are our future leaders. They will be the custodians of our stories, our
culture and our history. Reconciliation is something we should be proud
of and work hard to achieve.” Dr Tom Calma, Co-Chair of Reconciliation
Australia
This year, Torrens Valley Christian School has been on an exciting journey as staff, students, parents and members of the
community have developed a Reconciliation Action Plan! And this week, members of our Association met to discuss the Plan
and input their ideas.
How did all this come about?
From the very inception of the school, there has been a passion in the school community to provide opportunities for students
to use their gifts and talents in practical expressions of reconciliation. This commitment to reconciliation between indigenous
and non-indigenous Australians arose largely from our understanding that, as Christians, that we are called to love others, just
as Christ Himself modelled reconciliation through His atoning death and resurrection:
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Cor 5:18
Earlier this year, however, we recognised that, as a community, we wanted to develop a whole school framework – a
Reconciliation Action Plan - to support positive and meaningful action in the area of reconciliation.
Using Reconciliation Australia’s existing reconciliation framework - Relationships, Respect and Opportunities - an action team
was formed to consider specific actions we could implement in the classroom, around the school and within the community. It
was exciting to see three generations of a family with an indigenous heritage represented in the team.
They spent a whole day together…. And it was a fabulous day!
Of particular significance, the groups developed a TVCS RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN VISION:
Torrens Valley Christian School is a Christ-centred community which recognises and honours our First Nation people. We
are actively developing a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's history, culture and
languages in a spirit of reconciliation. We are committed to listening to Aboriginal voices, building authentic relationships,
improving access opportunities and creating a shared sense of belonging in our community.
Where to from here? Dr Fiona Partridge sums it up when she says, “We are seeing the importance as a school of actively
working towards embedding cultural understandings in our educational programs, not just running one-off events and
activities. I am excited that this generation of students are seeing the importance of understanding and appreciating our
indigenous heritage.”
Yours in Christ’s service. Julie Prattis. Principal.

2017 ENROLMENTS & RETURNING TO SCHOOL
We are planning our class structures for 2017. Before we
finalise arrangements may I remind you that the school
requires one term’s notice in writing if your child will not be
returning in 2017. This process is in the conditions of
enrolment form signed by parents on enrolment. A penalty
may apply if there is late notice of withdrawal of a student.
If there is a possibility your child might be leaving but the
decision is not confirmed yet, notice of this should also be
given to me and we can hold a place for your child until your
decision is finalised. If you decide to stay, your child will not
lose their place at TVCS. Thank you.

YEAR 9 GERMAN EXCURSION TO HAHNDORF:
On Tuesday of week 10, Term 3, 2016 the year 9 German
class had an all day excursion to Hahndorf, accompanied by
Herr Allen and me. We began the day by sketching the
German style Half Timbered houses in a back road about 10
minutes out of Hahndorf. Then it was into Hahndorf itself to
learn about some of the German migration history. We
visited some of the oldest surviving houses from settlement
which was founded in 1839, the local Lutheran church
cemetery with headstones in
German and wandered the
main street taking in its
history.
Students had to fill in a work
booklet as we went and also
had to note down as many
German words, names and
products from various shops
as possible throughout the
day. There was a prize for the
most thoroughly filled in
booklet. We finished the day
with a tour of Sir Hans
Heysen’s (a most famous
South Australian German!) home and gallery at the Cedars.
The weather was not as cold as first predicted and the
students’ behaviour was fantastic – a credit to them and they
represented our school beautifully.
Here are some comments from some of the students about
the day. Frau Belinda Allen (Secondary German Teacher)
The Cedars and having free time wandering down the main
street. Jamie
Wandering around Hahndorf was my favourite. Zac
I enjoyed the Cedars as well as looking inside the different
shops on the main road of Hahndorf. Elise
I enjoyed learning about Hans Heysen and the Cedars. It
was very interesting to know about their life which was so
different to ours. Jasmine
I enjoyed exploring Hahndorf and visiting Hans Heysen’s
home and seeing all of his work. I loved walking through his
home. Kiarora
Free time in the main street, seeing the old German houses,

day. Jemimah
Welcome back students, parents and teachers, to
term four!
How time flies when you are having fun! On behalf of the
team at Camp Australia, we hope you have had wonderful
holidays and are re-charged and ready for the last term of the
year. Here at OSHC we are eager and excited to kick-start
this term with our Camp Australia kids. As always, it was a
pleasure to catch up with our regular attendees, as well as
welcome some new smiling faces in the Before and After
School Care sessions this week.
One of the service’s great successes was achieving ‘Meeting’
in our recent assessment and rating against the National
Quality Standards. We are also very happy to report that our
service was rated ‘exceeding’ in two areas, ‘Physical
Environment’ and ‘Collaborative partnerships with families
and communities’. On behalf of the OSHC team, we want to
say a huge thank you to all the children, parents, school
community and Camp Australia team members who have
helped to make this service such a wonderful and enriching
environment for all the children. We hope to celebrate many
more success like this over the years to come.
At OSHC we are so excited about term four. The focus we
have chosen this term is ‘celebrations’. After nearly a whole
year of working with the children we believe it is important to
celebrate the many achievements that have been
accomplished here at OSHC throughout the year. The
children attending OSHC this term will be involved in many
opportunities to explore and engage in activities in relation to
our theme. The aim is to adopt an attitude where we all
acknowledge, encourage and celebrate the individual
achievements of the students, staff and school.
Last term the children were part of the process of planting
and growing some succulent plants in our little OSHC green
house. With this being such a hit, as a group we have decided
to extend this activity and create our very own OSHC garden!
The children are so excited about this and cannot wait to get
started.
Well for now that is the full update from the Camp Australia
OSHC team. Please do not hesitate to stop by the room and
join in on all the fun we’re having. We hope to see many more
new faces in before and after school care, because there are
so many great things to come and we would love to share
them with everyone. Don’t forget to stop by in the morning
time for a delicious breakfast and a bit of a play before school
starts. Keep an eye out for what is to come next and enjoy the
rest of the week.
