Friday 10 March 2017 Dear Parents and Carers This week we have been celebrating strong and inspirational women. Miss Starr highlighted the fantastic work of women in STEM activities in her assembly promoting Science Week, including Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. International Women’s Day on Wednesday provided us with an opportunity to spend time discussing what it is like to be a young woman in Britain in 2017, the impact of the continuing lack of parity between the genders in Britain and around the world, and each tutor group highlighted the #BeBoldForChange that they would like to fight for. We have collected the students’ opinions and feelings and have created a display for this evening’s Alumnae Event, so our former students can engage with the thinking of our current cohort. I share some of their thoughts and insights below: Young women in 2017 are: Beautiful….strong…confident but self-critical…lonely…judged for our appearance…more powerful than we imagine…happy…empowered… driven…independent…increasingly equal…motivated…proud…anxious…unique…brave…fun…inspiring…resourceful…patient…loyal… objectified…mighty…bold…amazing…sophisticated…the future…just as clever as men The change I would like to fight for is: Equality…equal pay…children to be brought up knowing they can do anything…women to be recognised for their talents…full control for women over their bodies…an end to labelling women…stopping harassment …choice…stop sexualising women…breaking stereotypes…tax free sanitary products…a women in space…positive mental health for all Rosebery School Whitehorse Drive Epsom KT18 7NQ T.01372 720439 www.roseberyschool.co.uk @ RoseberySchool1 1 At the Alumnae Evening tonight, we will be asking our guests to fill in their own speech bubbles highlighting what they would tell their 16 year-old self to add to our display. We will also be matching up our alumnae with current Year 11 and Sixth Form students who have career interests in their field of expertise and we hope that this will lead to a very useful dialogue that can be followed up with work experience and mentoring opportunities. It promises to be an excellent evening. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this. The whole class was divided into groups with a maximum of five members in each one. We were free to choose our partners. Once the groups were sorted we got down to planning. This involved a lot of brainstorming as we set about putting our thoughts on paper. The must-haves in the project were: a business name, a logo, a slogan and consideration to the four P’s of marketing, i.e., Place, Promotion, Price and Product. Using all of these, but with particular emphasis to the four P’s, all groups were expected to produce a PowerPoint presentation and a Business Plan. This project made us step out of our comfort zones. The four P’s were crucial: for example, one of the P’s - Promotion - required that we create an advertisement. Every group had their own unique and creative way of promoting their business to the rest of the school; some emailed all the Heads of Years to share the news, while others created posters and distributed them in every form’s registers in order to create mass awareness. And this was the easy bit. The most challenging part was sales – that was serious business! The arrival of selling week meant that every group needed to finalise their PowerPoint presentations as well as Business Plans, but, most importantly, every group must have their products ready to sell. The weather conditions didn’t help as the last two days of selling week brought rain and heavy snow. This meant most groups were unable to sell their products at the Rosebery Quad as rain and snow kept our customers away. But Rosebery students were not to be deterred by this: some groups decided to sell their products outside of school, while others broke up their main stalls to sell at different locations within school in order to maximise sales. The entire class worked their socks off on this project and managed to earn a total profit of £382.65! Bearing in mind we only had a few weeks to prepare, and three to four school days to sell, this was no mean achievement. In keeping with Rosebery values the entire sum was given to a charity of each group’s choice. What a fantastic way to end our very first business project! We truly had a phenomenal time. A very special thanks to Mr Harvey, our Business Studies teacher, for guiding us every step of the way! The week was full of fun, games and messing around in the snow! Beginners, intermediates and advanced groups all progressed amazingly throughout the week, thanks to a jam packed schedule. Skiing five hours a day meant we worked up a serious appetite for some delicious pizza. The coach journey was long (23hrs), however the films watched helped us through! The hospitable family run Hotel (Hotel Gufo) was fantastic, and the delicious meals that awaited us at the end of the day were welcomed greatly. Bormio’s lovely town with its boutique shops and cobbled streets added to the cultural experience. All in all the week was great and if you are offered the chance to go don’t hesitate in saying yes! Students from Bormio, 2017 On Tuesday 7 March 2017 Mrs Cooley and Mrs Keaveney took fifteen Year 13 students to the National Apprenticeship Show to look at some of the opportunities that apprenticeships can offer as an alternative to university. The show was also featured on television on Monday evening. We have made such strong friendships across year groups and it is something we will not forget. Taking on these roles at first seemed daunting but the Drama teachers helped us to develop our characters throughout the rehearsal process. It was a big commitment but all the hours were so worth it because the whole cast pulled together for the amazing shows. The Music teachers were so helpful in adapting the music to suit our vocal registers and the amazing band took on the challenging score. It was hard getting used to performing on such a big stage at the Playhouse but the backstage crew made scene and mic changes easy. Overall, it has been so much fun working with such a close-knit, talented group of people and although there were times where it was challenging, with the help of all the wonderful teachers and support of the whole cast, we all worked together to create a fabulous show.” By Anabel Hindmarsh 11CX and Rachael Hawthorne 10EY CAREERS EVENT Date: Tuesday 14 March 2017 Time: 6.00pm – 8.00pm Just a reminder that our annual Careers Fair will be taking place on the above date.
