INTRODUCTION
INTRODUC T ION
2015: Strong growth in permanent roles
The start of last year brought with it good news. The rise in employment
seen in 2014 was reflected in early January 2015 in the form of strong growth
in the number of permanent roles. And this growth continued throughout
the year, signalling a promising trend for the permanent employment market.
According to data from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies
(APSCo), recruitment companies were advertising 16% more live vacancies in
mid 2015 than the previous year. The increase coincided with the UK Labour
Market figures at the time from the Office of National Statistics (ONS); which
reported that there were 31.05 million people in work between February and
April. That’s 424,000 more than for the year before.
The October edition of the same report revealed a milestone for UK
employment. The figures for full-time employment showed a year-on-year
increase of 291,000; helping take the overall employment rate to 73.6% – the
highest rate since records began in 1971. Ultimately, the year ended on a high.
2016: Accountancy & Finance sector looking positive
A growth in business confidence has been, and continues to be responsible
for powering the expansion of teams across the sector. During the recession,
businesses reduced their intake of qualified accountants – a move that saw
demand outstrip supply. So it’s no surprise that the need for newly qualified
accountants remains at the forefront of recruitment activity. And of course,
the resulting inevitable shortage in skills and experience works favourably
for highly-skilled candidates currently employed in or seeking permanent
roles. Prospective employees are being offered numerous job offers and
even competitive counter ones from their current employer when they look
to change companies. But for the purposes of staff attraction and retention,
the areas for focus for employers should be training opportunities and career
progression.
An annual report, ‘What do graduates do?’, tracks what qualified students
are doing six months after graduation. Compiled by the Higher Education
Statistics Agency (HESA), the 2015 edition found that 56.6% of 7,430
accountancy and finance 2014 graduates were working full-time in the UK.
A further 12.9% were working and engaged in further study: 19.7% of these
graduates were pursuing a professional qualification in ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or
ICAEW. So with this in mind, it’s expected that 2016 will experience a rise in
the numbers of newly qualified accountants. While this will ease the pressure
of overburdened accounting teams, higher remuneration is set to continue
and the same applies to areas of payroll, credit, and tax.
The desire to push forward with growth, in a time where business confidence
is high, also calls for good auditors, internal auditors, and credit controllers to
keep both businesses and their financial affairs in check. But as time passes,
these very businesses are facing the dilemma of choosing between waiting
months to recruit ideal candidates or immediately recruiting candidates who
match basic requirements in the hope they’ll develop over the course of the
role. To somewhat overcome this issue, many companies including Big 4
accountancy practices PwC, Deloitte, EY, and KPMG are holding open and
insight days in a bid to inform and inspire prospective professionals across
the sector.
