He/She has asked you to summarize the sermon for him/her. What would you say? Grow What scripture was shared during the sermon? Were these verses new to you, or have you studied them before? What did you find challenging or new in these verses when you applied them to your life? 1. Define Envy. Who is the most envious person you know? What do they do or say that leads you to say they are envious? 2. Reflecting on this statement: “Since envy always desires what it doesn’t have, it will always go unsatisfied,” how would envy be a sin? 3. Read Galatians 5:16-21. How does Paul describe envy? 4. Read 1 Samuel 18:5-9. What is Saul envious of? Which symptoms of envy is Saul displaying? How did Saul act on his envy? 5. Read Genesis 37:17-24. What were Joseph’s brothers envious of? How did they choose to act on this envy? 6. Read Esther 7. Who was envious of what? What was the end result of this person’s envy? 7. Explain how you have seen each of these symptoms of envy in those around you - malice, jealously, dejection, hypocrisy and lovelessness. How have you displayed these in your own life? How has it negatively impacted your life? Who do you need to ask forgiveness for hurting them because of your envy? With whom can you share your struggle with envy for prayer, encouragement and accountability? Serve What was the one thing—the golden nugget—from the sermon that challenged you, changed you, caused you to really think about things, and/or made you want to take action right away? Summary of the Seven Deadly Sins Pride—The itch for recognition—“I” always at the center Sloth—Don’t bother me. I couldn’t care less. Anger—Don’t invade my space. I won’t let you get away with that. I’ll see that you pay. Greed—What’s mine is mine. Lust—My craving must be satisfied. Gluttony—Give me more and more. Envy—What’s yours should be mine. What difference has it made, or do you think it will make, in your life and your relationship with God and others? 8. Which of these are you struggling with the most right now? What are the results in your life right now because of this sin? What is your plan on dealing with it? How does God fit in your plan? Who are you going to ask to hold you accountable to your plan on dealing with this sin?
