ACADEMY NEWS 29th November 2012 www.burlingtondanes.org Year 9 Students Walk in the Footsteps of Heroes The end of last week saw 47 Year 9 students make the humbling journey across parts of Belgium and the Somme for BDA’s annual battlefields trip. provided the backdrop to a sombre and reflective evening. At Menin Gate, Reece and Eman laid a wreath of remembrance on behalf of BDA. Led by Miss Bedford, the group’s first stop was Essex Farm, near Ypres. Originally a dressing station for the injured during WW1, the site is now a cemetery where nearly 1,200 fallen soldiers are buried. The final afternoon was spent at the Somme and the location of the infamous offensive where over 1 million casualties cemented its place in history as one of the bloodiest military operations ever recorded. Some bleak weather conditions bestowed the visit with a heavy but authentic atmosphere. The group also stopped at Vimy Ridge where a few of our Moroccan students paid respect to their countrymen who fell during WW1. In close proximity to Ypres is Sanctuary Wood, where the students ventured along a sequence of reconstructed trenches, gaining brief insight to the dire living conditions faced by soldiers for extraordinary lengths of time during the war. From there they strove forth to the famous Flanders Fields museum for an enriching glimpse at war-time history. Next in line was Tyne Cot, a cemetery assigned to Britain in recognition of the sacrifices made in WW1, where a dramatic sunset This was the third consecutive year of the ever-popular History trip and a very successful one at that. The students were immaculately behaved and displayed respect, enthusiasm and a real thirst for knowledge throughout. They were a credit to the school. Don’t forget the new time of 1.30pm – please make sure you get a lunch pass from Miss Hill at break so we can start on time! FAITHFULNESS Our scripture passage for the week is the parable of the fig tree, where Jesus reminds us that even though everything in the world goes through change, his words will ‘never pass away’. Change is often difficult for many people, but we know that our God is eternal and unchanging, and that his love for us is deeper than the deepest ocean. The challenge for us is to be as faithful to God as He is to us. The Main Thing is being held at the new later time of 1.30pm every Wednesday. Please see Miss Hill if you would like a lunch pass to go for early lunch before the service begins. It has been another busy week. Please ensure now that the winter is here that you are wearing the correct uniform at all times and outdoor clothing is removed before entering the building. I thoroughly enjoyed popping into a number of lessons this week, in particular 7B Science with Mr Reynolds and an Art lesson with Mr Bunning. Please keep up the hard work and positive attitude. Enjoy your long weekend. Miss Quinton: Good afternoon Year 8. On Tuesday in assembly I will be showing you the breakdown of the last rank order results so that you can see clearly the progress that you have made as a year group. You have worked hard at your assessments this year and have made more progress than many of the other year groups. I am also pleased to say that Year 8 is the year group in KS3 with the highest number of pupils who have no demerits. These are great achievements and we will be working hard in the next few weeks to reward you. Miss Akingbule: Good afternoon Year 9. Good afternoon year nine. I spent last Thursday and Friday travelling with forty seven year nine students to the Battlefields in France and Belgium. The students on the trip displayed exemplary behaviour and were great ambassadors for the school. Both Eman Rais and Reece Healy-Elliman proudly laid a wreath at the Menin Gate in memory of the Commonwealth and British soldiers from World War one. Well done to the most recent batch of students who have received EBac badges for meeting or exceeding their target levels in all of the following subjects, Mathematics, English Language, Science, Geography or History and French. Have a great weekend. Mr Stephenson: Good afternoon Year 10. Monday marks the start of what a GCSE examination will look and feel like. Emotionally and mentally you will be tested, and tested you will be. You will want to give up and turn on those computer games, check your facebooks and whatever else distracts those wonderful brains of yours. It will be so easy to turn away from the academic task at hand and resign yourself to a fate of woe and the realm of “I can’t” and “I won’t” and “I’m going to fail”. Year 10, we don’t do failure!! Every challenge that has been placed at your feet has been met and beaten. This period of examinations will test your resolve and questions will be asked about who and what type of student you want to become. My advice…answer and answer confidently!! Parents, this weekend is the perfect opportunity for every child to prepare themselves for the assessments. I urge that you maintain a strict revision policy and ensure that our high standards do not slip. We want to maintain and exceed the high expectations we have for Year 10. Have a productive Weekend and thank you as always for your support. God Bless, Mr Stephenson. Mr Bissoo: Good afternoon Year 11. This afternoon you will be given your mock exam revision booklet, which will outline which topics you need to be revising for the exams commencing on the 10th December. There are intervention sessions after school, subject specific GCSE revision booklets on sale in the KS4 office and a school full of teachers, who are working hard with you to ensure you earn the grades you deserve – don’t let yourself down! Sowing the seeds of effort and determination now will ensure you reap the fruits of success later on – so think positive and push yourself!...Next Friday a yr11 tutor group will enjoy fresh, juicy, delicious pizza for having the highest collective merits, attendance and lowest demerits in the year group – WILL IT BE YOUR TUTOR GROUP??? YOU DECIDE! Have a great weekend and don’t forget that on Thurs 20th December the WINTER WONDERLAND awaits those with the lucky tickets! Mr Bissoo. FILM CLUB RECOMMENDS Witches, wizards, warriors and Willow Thanks to a necessary prompt from Miss Aitken’s 5,4,3,2,1 choices, this week’s film recommendation is Ron Howard’s strangely epic fantasy, Willow. Many of the BDA staff will remember this somewhat overlooked classic from their younger days. Whether it be with a fondness for the honourable Willow, an apprentice sorcerer with a big heart, or with utter horror at the recollection of a two-headed, troll-munching river monster, this is a film that is sure to have made an impression. Written by George Lucas, the genius behind the Star Wars series, the film was released in 1988 and tells the story of a young “nelwyn” (a hobbit-like person) called Willow, who dreams of becoming a powerful conjurer. Unsuspectingly, Willow is one- day presented with the task of protecting the baby princess Elora Danan, who, it has been prophesised, is the only living soul with the power to overthrow the evil Queen Bavmorda. From here a riveting journey unfolds involving wizards, warriors, monsters of all kinds and some awe-inspiring landscapes; all set in a wholly unfamiliar world. Innovative in so many ways, the special effects in Willow are especially extraordinary; they are at their most spectacular in the infamously disturbing metamorphosis scene, where a whole army of soldiers are transformed by the evil queen into a frightening drove of squealing pigs. Starring Val Kilmer (Batman Forever) and Warwick Davies (the Harry Potter series), Willow has a lot in common with more recent and commercially successful fantasy films such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Chronicles of Narnia. If you enjoyed these, you are sure to find this rollicking tale of good versus evil extremely entertaining. WORLD NEWS: Joey’s new French accent Despite a high-profile move to France, controversial footballer Joey Barton has worked his way into the headlines again this week. This time it was neither questionable pitch-conduct, nor provocative twitter activity drawing attention to the exQPR man, but a rather strange press conference. Following his debut for Marseille, where Barton was describing, among other things, his difficult relationship with the British media, he appeared to speaking in a poor but clear French accent. Videos of the humorous interview have since spread like wild-fire on the internet. Despite hinting on twitter that the performance may have been a not so elaborate joke, many have asked why it is that some people have this tendency to adopt the accent of a country that they are visiting. One psychologist has stated that the behaviour is very common and comes from a strong desire to be liked and understood. Referring to it as a ‘subconscious’ trait, she suggested that people are often not aware that they Joey Barton made his Marseille debut are doing it. It would seem that no matter how far Joey distances himself from the UK, he will still find himself in the countries newspapers. BURLINGTON NOTICE BOARD BDA SPORTING NEWS BDA DOMINATE WEST LONDON TABLE TENNIS This week has seen yet more success for the BDA table tennis team: at the West London Schools Table Tennis Championship BDA were victorious in the under 19s and under 13s boys’, as well as the under 13s girls’ categories. WORD OF THE WEEK: Simpering THIS WEEK’S THEME: Faithfulness Verb: to smile in a silly, selfconscious, often coy manner. When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
