Phi Beta Lambda
Celebrates and Gives
Back
Phi Beta Lambda members
gathered for their annual
Christmas party at their adviser Patsy Taylor’s home on the
evening of December 3 to celebrate Christmas and the end
of the Fall 2014 semester. After dinner members wrapped
presents for their Angel Tree
child. Lots of conversation,
excitement, and sounds of the
season filled Mrs. Taylor’s
home.
Members have been busy
throughout the semester fundraising for various causes including the American Cancer
Society’s Relay for Life, the
Angel Tree Project, and for an
upcoming competitive events
conference they hope to attend in the spring.
Many
thanks to all of the faculty,
staff, and students who have
supported their causes.
PBL wishes everyone a
Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year!

Duane Murphy-November 2014 Student of the Month
Duane Murphy is a senior
Business Administration student with a concentration in Information Systems and minors
in Accounting and Graphic Design. He is also a member of
Honors College. Duane has a
long list of extra circular activities that he is involved in at
Chowan. He is the president
and a founder of the Chowan
Computer Club, former president and still active member of
the Rotaract Club, member of
Sigma Beta Delta, the Honors
College Student Association,
Artisus Club, the International
Student Club, Phi Gamma Mu,
Alpha Chi, and T-Go Animate
Club. He has been on the President’s List four times and received the Drs. Vaughn and
Miles Outstanding Business
Student Award in April 2014.
Duane believes that Chowan
is friendly, fun, and an experience all of its own. He says
that you come as a student and
leave as family. His advice to
freshman would be print your
syllabus, keep your head about
you, and don’t panic. Stay on
top of your assignments and if
you have concerns, talk to the
faculty or staff. They really are
here to help you. He feels the
best things about Chowan are

you build, and the confidence

schooled and he feels that really helped in being prepared for
college. He says that homeschooling helped him discover
how to be an independent
learner.
Breyanna Tillman-December 2014 Student of the Month
Breyanna Tillman is a North
Carolina native, hailing from
Charlotte. She is the oldest of
three siblings. She was attracted to Chowan University because of its small size, and the
fact that it was just far enough
away from home for her to return on breaks, but not every
weekend. She likes the personal relationships that are
possible with the faculty at
Chowan, and that they are
readily available to answer
questions.
At Chowan, Breyanna is a
senior with a concentration in
Information Systems and has
been on the Dean’s List every
semester during her tenure at
Chowan. She has also made
the President’s List. She is a
member of the Honors College,
Sigma Beta Delta, and Phi Beta
Lambda. She is also involved
with The Skeletal Hand, where
she is the Facebook developer
for the horror group.
After graduation, Breyanna
plans to return to Charlotte,
where she hopes to get a job in
IT web development. She is
also considering the possibility
of joining the military. Her long
term goal is to become an FBI
agent within the next 5-10
years.
Breyanna has been a recipient of both the President’s
Scholarship and the Dean’s
Scholarship. In addition to her
classes and campus activities,
she works as a Resident Assistant. For fun, Breyanna enjoys
a variety of activities with
friends and family. She is particularly fond of dining out,
shopping, getting her nails
done, and practicing target
shooting.

Breyanna says that the most
influential people in her life
have been her mother and her
great-grandfather. Her favorite
scripture verse comes from 2
Corinthians 5:7,
“… for we
walk by faith, not by sight” during our time on this earth.
Breyanna’s advice to current
students is that "in the long run,
all of the hard work will pay off,
so don’t give up!"
We wish you the best in all
your future endeavors, Breyanna! Congratulations on being
selected as the CU School of
Business Student of the Month
for December, 2014.
