Hello from the Head Teacher
Welcome back to school. The term has got off to a great start – the new learning themes
across the school are so exciting. The children were all thrilled when they came in to see
what they would be learning about in the weeks ahead.
 Staffing
Year 3- Their theme is all about the amazing stories and Life of Roald Dahl. Their classrooms
are decorated with scenes from the books- including George’s Marvellous Medicine, The
Twits and other fun things!
What’s Been Happening?
Year 4- Their theme is Dragon School and is all about flight and the works of Cressida
Cowell – who wrote the books ‘How to Train your Dragon’. There are currently large dragons
hanging from the ceilings in Y4.
Year 6 children got their term off to
a great start with a military training
day on our school field. Some
soldiers came into school and trained
the children – and the staff! – to give
their best and keep trying when
things get tough… and muddy! What
a great day was had by all.
Year 5- Their theme is based on the ancient English poem ‘Beowulf’ the story of an AngloSaxon hero, who defeats the swamp monster- Grendel! In the corner of each Y5 classroom
Grendel’s den has appeared…
Year 6 – Their theme is ‘Bring it On’ and is all about achieving their personal goals and
‘meeting’ other people who have done the same like Scott of the Artic or space travellers!
Some of these heroic people have been built into model people in the corner of the
classrooms.
There is a lot to keep us busy in the weeks ahead as the children start to learn about these
new subjects. Until next time, Mrs Armstrong
Parking
Year 5 children are off to the
Gloucester Museum to learn all about
Anglo-Saxon life and take part in
some workshops.
Year 4 children have been making
giant dragons from willow sticks and
tissue paper- some of the dragons
are nearly 2 meters long!
Some Year 6 children have been
rehearsing for a dance we are going
to perform in a competition at the
Everyman Theatre.
What’s Happening Next in
School?
Clubs start next week! Don’t forget
to check your children’s bag to see
which clubs they have been
allocated. Clubs will be added to the
diary as soon as possible.
Don’t forget the 12th February is an
As you know due to the amount of families our schools serve, parking is always going to be
an issue both in Guise Close and Courtfield Road. You may have noticed me out and about
before and after school as I have been trying to ‘get a feel’ for the situation. I have
received four complaints about parking recently – one complaint from a parent and three
from local residents. The biggest issue appears to be that cars are being parked and left
unoccupied across the driveways of neighbours to the school. These residents are then
totally unable to get off/on their drive and go to work/go out for the period of time it takes
for you to deliver/collect your child and return to your car- in most cases this takes ten
minutes. This causes immense frustration for these people and they then – on occasionraise this with you on return to your vehicle. This can be upsetting for all parties- the
resident, you as parents and your
children if they witness this
situation. Please consider parking
further away and walking for just a
few more minutes with your child to
try to avoid the congestion around
school in the mornings. If you have
to park as close as possible to
school for whatever reason then
please do not block people’s
property- especially if you leave
your car with no one in it. It was
also interesting to me to be told
that the gravel area at the end of
Guise Close is also private
property- this is actually private
parking for the residents, owned by
them – in essence if you park on
the gravel you are effectively
parking on their drive. I’m afraid I
don’t have a ‘magic wand’ to solve this issue for us all – and I know it is a very busy time
for you in the mornings, made more frustrating if you cannot find somewhere to leave your
car. However, it would be so helpful if we could all try to be a bit more aware, as we all need
to ‘share’ the same space. I have included an image of Guise Close with red lines added
showing where people’s driveways actually are, it is interesting to see how little space to
park there actually is.

We ask, Can you…
If your child wishes to use tuck
shop, they should be doing so
before the doors to the
classrooms open at 8:45 am.
Tuck shop opens at 8:30-please
encourage your child to come
between those times so that they
can be in class taking part in
important morning tasks at the
correct time. If children come
down to tuck shop from their
classroom once they are inside
the building it means that they
are often not back in class until
9:00am. The current room where
tuck shop is held is also used as
a teaching space in the mornings
and so is needed for first thing in
the morning.
You Said, We Did…
My son’s football boots have gone
missing. They were not found in the
end of term clear out or in lost
property, but he
did have them in
school. Please
could you put a
photo in the
newsletter in
case they have
got mixed up in someone else’s bag
and ended up at home somewhere?
They look like these. If you find
these boots please send them into
the school office.

Staff Update
We are going to say goodbye to two of our staff… Mrs Beard has been a Teaching Assistant
at our school for many years and she has sadly (for us!) decided to take some time for
herself and retire. I know we will all miss Mrs Beard a great deal- but I’m sure she’ll pop in
and see us sometimes. Mrs Hunt- one of our dinner ladies has also decided to leave usmany thanks to Mrs Hunt for all of her hard work and looking after us at lunchtimes.
