Syl-Off® 91XX Series Thermal-Cure Solventless

Syl-Off ® 91XX Series Thermal-Cure Solventless
Silicone Release Coatings for Films from Dow Corning
Release System Information Guide
Features
• Solvent-free processing
• A variety of cure temperature
options
• Flat release profiles
• Stable release
General Information
Syl-Off ® brand 91XX Series coatings for films are based on 100
percent solids reactive vinyl-functional siloxane polymers:
(Si-CH=CH2)
When combined with their respective crosslinkers and a platinum
catalyst, these coatings cure via an addition reaction in the presence
of heat.
All platinum-catalyzed addition-cure coatings offer fast cure at low
to moderate temperatures. And, within the solventless family, there
is the added advantage of being able to maximize bath life (while
minimizing cure time) within defined temperature ranges. This is
accomplished by inhibiting the catalyst in a controlled manner.
Syl-Off ® thermal-cure solventless silicone release coatings for films
offer premium release and a comparatively fast, low-temperature cure.

Physical Properties
Syl-Off 91XX Series coatings are provided in a range of viscosities
suitable for processing with equipment typically used for solventless
silicone coatings. They are clear liquids formulated without catalyst.
Catalyst addition is required.
Applications
• Filmic pressure sensitive laminate/labelstock
• Industrial release films
• Nonstick packaging, including packaging for asphalt and food
• In-line, double-sided and differential release applications
Inhibitor System
Syl-Off 91XX Series coatings are pre-formulated with a controlled
low-temperature inhibitor that offers excellent bath life and facilitates
good low-temperature cure at web temperatures from 80°C (175°F).
Product Range Details
The Syl-Off 91XX Series coatings listed below are available worldwide
and meet the majority of global industry requirements. However, they
represent only a portion of Dow Corning’s silicone release technology.
Contact your Dow Corning representative for information about
additional, locally available product options.

Catalyst:
Syl-Off ® 4000
Catalyst
A reactive organo-platinum complex dispersed in polysiloxane. The
standard catalyst for Syl-Off ® solvent-based and solventless platinumcatalyzed release coatings. Since Syl-Off ® 91XX Series coatings for
films are not pre-catalyzed, the addition of Syl-Off ® 4000 Catalyst is
required to achieve cure.
Release Modifiers:
Syl-Off ® 9151
Release Modifier
Designed to provide a broad range of release modification. For use with
Syl-Off ® SL 9110 Coating, Syl-Off ® SL 9111 Coating and Syl-Off ® SL 9112
Coating. Low-temperature cure performance possible. Good anchorage
to mono-oriented polypropylene films and polyethylene-coated kraft.
Syl-Off ® 9156
Release Modifier
Designed to provide a broad range of release modification. For use with
Syl-Off ® SL 9106 Coating. Good anchorage to polyester films.
Anchorage Additive:
Syl-Off ® SL 9176
Anchorage
Additive
Improves adherence of silicone release coatings to unprimed polyester
and polyolefin films. Minimal impact on cure or release performance.
Suitable for use with all Syl-Off ® 91XX Series silicone release coatings.
Product Handling Information
Substrates
Syl-Off 91XX Series coatings have been successfully applied to
polyolefin film and unprimed polyester.
Corona treatment may be needed to improve anchorage to poly-coated
krafts or polyolefin films.
The suitability of a substrate for use with the chosen release coating
should be evaluated before commercial application.
Application Equipment
Syl-Off 91XX Series coatings are designed to be applied using precision
coating equipment such as three-roll offset differential gravure and
multi-roll smooth roll coaters.
3
Coat Weight
Without experimentation, it is difficult to establish precise recommendations for the correct amount of silicone coating to be deposited
on the substrate. Pickup values are entirely dependent on the coating
equipment used, equipment operation and substrate.
A recommended starting point is 1 g per m2 (0.7 lb per 3,000 sq ft
ream); this can be adjusted to meet substrate and end-use applications.
Coating trials should be conducted for each substrate and coating
formulation used.
Bath Life
The usable bulk bath life is impacted by Pt level, bath temperature and
loss of inhibitor through atmospheric exposure. It is recommended that
formulated coating baths, in general, be used within 4-6 hours.
Bath life varies depending on the coating formulation and the test
method used. Bath life trials should be conducted for each formulation.
Formulation Advice
Crosslinker:Coating Ratio
Good cure can be achieved with crosslinker:coating ratios (calculated
and represented as moles SiH:moles SiVi) typically ranging from 2:1
to 3:1.
Catalyst
Since Syl-Off 91XX Series coatings for films are not pre-catalyzed,
the addition of Syl-Off ® 4000 Catalyst is required to achieve cure.
Consult your Dow Corning Technical Service representative for usage
level information.
High-Release Modifiers
Release modifiers may be added to increase the peel force required to
separate the release liner from the adherent. Actual results will vary
depending on the exact formulation used and other factors such as
adhesive and substrates.
Anchorage Additive
To improve anchorage of silicone coating to difficult filmic substrates,
it is recommended that as a starting point, a level of 0.5 to 2.0 wt% of
Syl-Off ® SL 9176 Anchorage Additive be used in the formulation.
4
Bath Preparation
Equipment should be clean and dry. Stainless steel equipment is
preferred.
The components should be mixed in the following order and stirred
for 20 to 30 minutes (total) to ensure homogeneity:
1.Blend the base release polymer and high-release modifier.
2.Add anchorage additive and stir.
3.Add the crosslinker; stir.
4.Add the catalyst while stirring.
NOTE: The platinum catalyst is sensitive to contamination by
compounds containing nitrogen, sulfur, tin, phosphorus, arsenic,
antimony, selenium or tellurium and by some residual solvents or
monomers. To prevent catalyst poisoning and inhibition of cure,
good coater hygiene must be maintained. A more complete list of
inhibiting compounds is available from Dow Corning.
Application Information
Polyolefin Substrates and Surfaces
Cure Performance
Polymer structure, inhibitor system, time, temperature, type and age
of the substrate, coat weight, and degree of surface penetration can all
affect the cure performance of Syl-Off 91XX Series coatings.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate the typical cure performance of Syl-Off
91XX Series silicone release coatings on polyolefin substrates and at
different web temperatures. Cure performance is defined in terms of
percent extractables (amount of uncured silicone that can be extracted
from a cured sample).

Overcoming Cure Inhibition
Some additives used in the manufacture of films and poly-coated
krafts can adversely affect cure.
When using offset roller systems to apply platinum-catalyzed coatings, care should be taken with the choice of the rubber-coated rolls.
Materials used to vulcanize the rubber may inhibit the cure of the
silicone coating.
