WINTER 2013 Lewis & Clark Humane Society: Finding forever homes for furry friends since 1964 • www.mtlchs.org Malamute Reunion Brings Back Memories and Friends O ver 80 adopters, LCHS staff members, friends, and, of course, dogs, gathered in mid-October to celebrate the second anniversary of the original rescue of 161 malamutes from a backyard breeder in Jefferson County. Thankfully, the rescue resulted in a stiff sentence for the defendant, and the happy re-homing of what ended up to be 254 dogs and puppies. Bob Sutherland, President of Alaskan Malamute Assistance League flew in from Alaska to celebrate, and said, “It is so great to be together with so many of the people who were involved in the rescue. It was a truly epic event, and to be able to see some of the dogs and celebrate the success with our friends is just heart-warming.” Wendy Hergenraeder, Montana State Director for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) whose team was instrumental in the rescue and who con- 2014: A Golden Anniversary tributed more than $600,000 to the overall cost of the rescue, said “The malamute case was a success from day one—from the flawless execution of the rescue, through LCHS’s care of the dogs for over 15 months, to the re-homing of each of the dogs. HSUS was proud to be associated in this rescue and salutes the people who made it all happen.” Animal Shelter 2112 East Custer Avenue Helena, Montana 59604 (406) 442-1660 www.mtlchs.org Find us on Facebook! Hours Tuesday–Friday: 12 noon to 6 p.m. Saturday: 12 noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday–Monday: Closed Adoptions until 30 minutes before closing It’s hard to image that its been fifty years since ago a core group of Helenans, concerned about the treatment of stray animals, formed the Lewis & Clark Humane Society. From its humble beginnings as a totally volunteer-run organization, through different directors, staff, volunteers and Board members, the shelter has grown by leaps and bounds. In it’s 50th year, the shelter will employ 20 staff and operate with a budget of over $1,000,000. Over the next year, we will highlight some of the early pioneers of animal welfare in our community, tell some stories and give thanks to those who selflessly did something that saved so many lives and brought so much compassion to abandoned animals. These men and women are our heroes. Stay tuned for more and be sure to attend this year’s Spay-Ghetti Dinner in March to see the premiere of a special 50th Anniversary Video. We are on track to end the year having helped close to 2,000 abandoned or homeless animals who found their way to our doors, through no fault of their own, and who needed a helping hand. The work of the staff and Board assures that each of those animals is greeted with love, given a warm place to sleep, proper exercise, treats and lots of hugs. But we could not do all those things without the generosity of our caring friends, people like you, who support our work financially, host fundraisers, donate items on our wish list, stop by to volunteer some of your valuable time, or adopt an animal who needs a forever friend. Your support makes this life-saving work possible. Friends like you funded the building of a much-needed addition to the cat room (debuting in February), helped us adopt out the last of the Malamutes, donated thousands of volunteer hours and contributed a whopping 70% of our annual revenue. THANK YOU! They say it takes a village to raise a child—I say it takes a village to care for our furry friends. I’m so grateful our village includes YOU! On behalf of all of us, two and fourlegged, Merry Christmas, happy holidays and happy New Years. Let’s make 2014 a great one, one in which we will celebrate our Golden Anniversary and 50 years of animal care. Together, as a village, we will do it for another 50 years. We have completed nearly 30,000 spay & neuter procedures since our merger with LCHS in 2009. That number reflects 210,000 potential live births. This year we made semi-annual visits to: Billings, Great Falls, Helena, Ronan, St. Ignatius, Rocky Boy, Fort Belknap Agency, Lodgepole, Blackfeet Country, Ennis, Anaconda, Drummond, Whitehall, Boulder and Butte. We spent over 100 days on the road. Our veterinarians and technicians are true heroes: They leave their homes and families on Friday, and spend the weekend (and sometimes Mondays) performing and assisting with surgeries. We work in whatever facility is available and arranged by the local community host committee. Our venues include school gyms, county shops, fire halls, senior centers, city halls and fairgrounds. We carry all the necessary surgical equipment and supplies to set-up a first-rate surgical clinic. Our clinics have from two to seven veterinary teams depending on our location. Last September we had six teams in Great Falls and performed nearly 400 procedures in two days. We are often asked why we do such a grueling schedule. The answer is always the same, “because the need is so great.” There really is a much kinder and gentler way to control companion animal population, How YOU can Volunteer: Spay Montana says a big thank you to these hotels who generously donate hotel rooms for our Spay Montana employees during Spay and Neuter clinics. rather then euthanizing millions of puppies and kittens, we prefer spay and neuter. Our program is geared to “those in need of assistance.” Unfortunately, as the economy has declined, the number of “those in need of assistance” has grown. Because our shelter has such an aggressive adoption and spay/neuter program, we fall well below the national average regarding euthanasia. Please visit our website, www.spaymontana.org for information on ways to donate towards spay/neuter. Our “Sponsor a Spay” is just $25.00 towards an animal in need. Happy Holidays from our family to yours! Strutt Your Mutt Needs YOU! Calling all event marketing geniuses! Do you want to be a part of re-creating our Strutt Your Mutt event? We want to bring it back in June 2014 better than ever, with a walk/run, festival-like atmosphere, live music, food, games for kids and dogs, and FUN for the whole family! We’re looking for some volunteers to form a core committee to make it happen. If you’re interested in helping, and have some great ideas and time, please call 442-1660 and leave your name or email [email protected]. It’s a great way to network with other Helena animal lovers, and your work will help raises thousands of dollars for the animals. Hope you’ll join us! A big thank you to all our amazing supporters who make donations via payroll deductions every month through Montana Shares. We are so grateful to your commitment to homeless animals. The commitment that you make via regular support is critical to the shelter’s ability to continue to provide quality care to the dogs and cats who call the shelter their temporary home. The room becomes electric when Bettie enters, she works it like an elite Hollywood icon, but her beginnings were not so bright and shiny. Bettie was born at the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, her mother had been one of the seized Alaskan Malamutes. Bettie was one of two siblings that survived the litter of six. Both Bettie and her sister were born with Megaesophagus, sometimes called MegaE. It’s a big scary word about a fairly rare condition that although it cannot be cured, it can be managed. It takes a veterinarian who is willing to learn and research right along with their client, some patience and definitely a sense of humor, carpet cleaner and lots of paper towels. Regurgitation of food is the most common symptom; one of the biggest risks is malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia. Oftentimes, MegaE is undiagnosed or sometimes veterinarians who don’t understand the disease will suggest euthanasia. Mike and Jackie Roach rescued a MegaE dog about five years ago from the Nebraska Humane Society and have successfully managed, enhanced and prolonged that dog’s life. When they learned that two of the “Montana Malamutes” had MegaE, they felt compelled to help one. They committed to adopting Bettie sight unseen; she arrived in Omaha via Delta Airlines on Feb 15th 2013. As luck would have it, two of their good friends adopted Bettie’s sister four months later! Bettie is fed in a type of high chair that was made just for her. It allows her to eat standing vertically on her two back legs. After the meal, Jackie and Mike sit with her and keep her vertical for about fifteen twenty minutes to allow gravity to move the food to her stomach. Bettie has grown to really enjoy this ‘one on one’ bonding time with her humans; she runs to the chair and can get into it all by herself and “woo woo woos” till her food arrives. Since Bettie’s arrival in Omaha, she has been a rock star at various dog events around town; Jackie and Mike are very in4 Lewis & Clark Humane Society Bettie is fed in a type of high chair that was made just for her. They enjoy having Bettie join them; she makes a cute spokes-dog for Megaesophagus and also serves as a great opportunity to share the story and lessons of Operation Malamute. Bettie has appeared on a local televised morning show and her recent claim to fame is being featured as a model in a holiday photo-shoot for Hayneedle, a national e-commerce company. She is also a regular at Brookstone Meadows, a skilled nursing facility, where she makes the residents smile when she shares kisses. Bettie enjoys doggie daycare and playing with her Siberian husky brothers and sisters. She loves to run and play and to be the center of attention. There’s not a day that goes by that she doesn’t make those around her laugh. She exudes supreme confidence which belies her small thirty-eight pound stature and extra-long tail. She doesn’t know that there’s anything wrong with her, and well… quite frankly, she’s right. www.mtlchs.org Can you adopt me? Our “long term residents” need of a forever home and their spirits are growing weary in the shelter. Can you help? LIZZIE & MILLIE 3Yearsold|Females Meet Lizzie and Milly two dogs rescued from a reservation. Lizzie and Milly are shy and timid dogs. Millie and Lizzie have come along way since they entered the shelter. After working with a trainer they both walk easily on a leash. Both dogs are incredibly gentle with people. These two are like Thelma and Louise as they go everywhere together. They know their basic commands and these two girls love to work for tasty treats. A fenced yard is a must along with knowledge and concern regarding shy and timid dogs. When it comes to other dogs they are tolerant of other shy and timid dogs. Millie and Lizzy would do best in a quiet, low key home. If you would love to help these girls continue to grow than come meet Lizzie and Milly. Lizzie and Millie are two for the price of one. Libertry 2yearold|Male Hello my name is Liberty. I arrived at LCHS as a stray. I’ve been at the shelter for over six months which is a very long time when you’re only two years old and I can’t wait to find my forever family. I’m a very quiet and independent feline most of the time. I also have a very sweet personality. I get along well with other quiet animals. If you think I would be an excellent fit in your home, you can see me at Petco. The Lewis & Clark Humane Society wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Doggy Bank business locations. These Businesses generously let us keep a donation bank at their location. It’s a way for our friends to donate without having to come to the shelter.
