International Concert Series 16|17 The Bridgewater Hall

The Bridgewater Hall
International Concert Series 16|17
Welcome to the 21st International Concert Series at The
Bridgewater Hall which once again offers concert-goers from
Manchester and beyond a chance to hear the best classical music
in one of the world’s finest concert venues.
Among debut recitalists are the incomparable Korean violinist,
Kyung Wha Chung and Liverpool-born pianist Paul Lewis. We
are also delighted to welcome the fabulous classical guitarist
Miloš as the main guest in Craig Ogden’s fifth Guitar Weekend.
The 2016|17 season offers new and familiar faces. Vladimir
Ashkenazy returns with his beloved Philharmonia, while the
St. Petersburg Philharmonic is led by another great Russian
maestro, Yuri Temirkanov. Top violinist Gidon Kremer brings his
young orchestra, Kremerata Baltica in a striking programme of
Piazzolla and Philip Glass.
Add into the mix, Emma Johnson, Sir Willard White, guitarist John
Williams and period-instrument innovators Orchestra of the Age
of Enlightenment and you have a fantastic season-long musical
party, celebrating many of the artistic partnerships developed over
21 remarkable years. This is your invitation to join these birthday
festivities, allowing you to share with us many hours of wonderful
music-making at The Bridgewater Hall.
Associate Artists The Sixteen give the Manchester premiere of
Sir James MacMillan’s Stabat Mater, while their annual Choral
Pilgrimage contrasts music by Palestrina and Poulenc. Another
Associate Artist, Wayne Marshall, organist at the Hall since 1996,
performs a French-flavoured organ recital.

Kyung Wha Chung is recognised as one of the finest violinists of her generation. Her
dazzling and probing artistry has made her a much-acclaimed performer throughout
her forty-year career. Lauded for her passion, her musicality and the intense excitement
of her playing, Chung’s interpretations have established her as an artist of the very
highest stature. Her recital programme combines the lyrical sensuality of Gabriel Fauré
with the dark hues of late Brahms, while Grieg’s naively youthful first Sonata whets the
appetite for the unsurpassed mastery of Bach’s works for unaccompanied violin.

Few living composers communicate with the emotional directness of Sir James
MacMillan, and performances of his new Stabat Mater will be eagerly anticipated
after its London premiere on 15 October. Commissioned by the Genesis Foundation
for Associate Artists, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen, the work is placed alongside
Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia, a haunting evocation of a lost age, and the psalm-setting
by Tallis upon which it is based. For searing emotion and spiritual intensity, this is an
occasion not to be missed.

Among the foremost musicians of our time, Vladimir Ashkenazy first came to the

Competition with John Ogdon in 1962. He has since become known as a charismatic
conductor including a longstanding relationship with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Now Conductor Laureate, their performances of Russian repertoire have made the
partnership legendary. In this concert, a stalwart of the concerto repertoire is performed
by German-Japanese pianist, Alice Sara Ott, while Rachmaninov’s First Symphony
explores the stormy emotions of youth and lost love.

Guitar Weekend 2017
Craig Ogden’s Guitar Weekend 2017 runs from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 January.
In addition to Miloš, the series will include Craig Ogden in collaboration with jazz
singer Jacqui Dankworth, a special focus on 21st century guitar music, a screening
of the film Musicwood, as well as the by now traditional foyer activities, workshops
and Sunday afternoon mass guitar jamboree. Further details will be announced in

‘Defying its many critics, the guitar itself was

Since the Hall opened in 1996, no orchestra has visited as often as the St. Petersburg
Philharmonic, nor left such a deep impression. Among the world’s finest ensembles and
led by a truly great maestro, they return with a Russian programme packed with fine
melodies and vivid colour. The first British performance of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody
took place in Manchester in 1932 performed by the composer, and few play this
work today with the panache and poise of Nicolai Lugansky. After the interval,
Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous tone poem transports us to the exotic orient with remarkable
musical imagination.

In 1997, Gidon Kremer created a new orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, comprising
outstanding young players from the Baltic states, which soon won praise for the
exuberance, energy and joy of their playing. A typically adventurous concert opens
with Philip Glass’s Second Violin Concerto (a companion work to Vivaldi’s The Four
Seasons) accompanied by a montage of evocative and original video images.
In The Season’s Digest, living Russian composer, Alexander Raskatov weaves a
colourful seasonal soundscape using motifs from popular piano pieces by Tchaikovsky.

John Etheridge and another master of the classical guitar, Gary Ryan. Performing
original material for solo, duo and trio, prepare to be blown away by the dazzling

Three decades ago, a group of London
musicians looked at the concept of the
orchestra and decided to throw away the
rulebook. The Orchestra of the Age of

for which period instruments are just one
element of its quest for authenticity. In this
programme, they focus their creative

works of the Baroque, Bach’s six amazing

Poulenc’s choral music was all written after 1936, when the tragic death of a close
friend led to a religious epiphany. Its seriousness and intensity contrast with his
more frivolous secular style, but these works make perfect companion pieces for
the pure counterpoint of the great Renaissance master, Palestrina. Associate Artists,
The Sixteen bring their own richly coloured sound and well-balanced voices to
music that has both spiritual fervour and heavenly vision.

album Close to You. You can imagine how thrilled we were when the legendary
Sir Willard White agreed to join us, not to impersonate ‘Old Blue Eyes’, but to take a

challenging repertoire, by providing a chance to develop long-term relationships with
particular performers. Our first group of Associate Artists, appointed in 2010, all are
now entering their 7th seasons as creative partners. In 2016|17, we welcome back
