HOLY WEEK 2013
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
This Week above all weeks calls us to holiness. It
is not the “week” that is holy; rather it is this week
that calls us to be holy. We are made holy … we
are sanctified …. through the power of the Lord
Jesus in our lives. This power, this grace, is His
gift to us through His Eucharistic Meal, His
Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection.
On Holy Thursday we enter into the mystery and
gift of the Eucharist when Jesus gives us His Body
and Blood for Holy Communion. And in that gift
flows the example of service and charity when
Jesus the washes the feet of His Apostles. On
Good Friday we are brought into the somber truth
that Jesus was nailed to the cross with the weight
of our sins. On Holy Saturday we wait with Jesus
in the tomb. And Easter Sunday brings us to the
wondrous truth that Jesus has triumphed over sin
and death for us and that His Resurrection is the
promise of His enduring presence in our lives.
Plan to join us for our beautiful and prayerful
liturgical services during this week.
Have a Blessed Holy Week.

SEMANA SANTA 2013
Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
Padre Jerome T. Karcher

SUNDAY MASS CHILDCARE TIMES
Topic: God is Love
Wednesday, April 3 | 7 PM | Parish Hall
by John LaBriola, Author & Speaker
Scripture tells us that God is love. If that is true, what
does that mean for us? How are we to understand this in
our daily life? Does His love change? Is it conditional?
How come I don’t always feel loved?
The truth is our understanding of love is so different
than God’s. Come and explore God’s love and get these
and other questions regarding God’s love answered.

Lenten Regulations
The following Lenten regulations are a reminder to us of our call to carry the cross and so unite ourselves more closely to
Jesus.
 Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Good Friday.

 Fasting is to be observed on Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are

bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to
one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
 In the fast of the early Church, the fast began upon rising. No meals were taken until the customary work day

ended at approximately 5 PM. A glass of juice may be taken in the morning and simple liquids during the day, e.g., water,
coffee, tea. The fast ends with a brief prayer, followed by an adequate meal. For many this may work as a more natural way to
fast.

 The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.
 Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence,

should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

 By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the
evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the Catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three
traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.
Holy Week Services
Morning Prayer ~ Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday 8:30 AM
Our parish community will join in prayer these mornings praying Morning Prayer, from the Liturgy of the Hours. Our
praying of the Psalms together is a sign of community in the Church.
The Holy Oils that have been blessed by the bishop during the Chrism Mass will be placed in the Ambry during Holy
Thursday Morning Prayer. The oils are a reminder to us that in our sacramental life of faith. Simple and ordinary
elements are used to celebrate profound realities. The Oil of the Sick is used in the Sacrament of the Sick. Sacred
Chrism is used at Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders; and the Oil of Catechumens is used at Baptism and to anoint
Catechumens.
Holy Thursday ~ Bilingual Mass at 7:00 PM
You are invited to celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening at 7 PM. This bilingual liturgy
will commemorate the Last Supper and the Institution of the Holy Eucharist, and the Priesthood. An important element
will be the Washing of Feet, which honors the Lord’s command to love and serve one another.
At the end of the service, we will process with the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose in the Parish Hall. You are
invited to remain and spend some time in adoration until 11 PM.
Good Friday ~ Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 2 PM English, and at 7 PM Spanish
"It is accomplished; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit."
Today the whole Church mourns the death of our Savior. This is traditionally a day of sadness, and prayer and is another
obligatory day of fasting and abstinence. The title for this day varies in different parts of the world: "Holy Friday" for
Latin nations, Slavs and Hungarians call it "Great Friday," in Germany it is "Friday of Mourning," and in Norway, it is
"Long Friday."
Easter Vigil ~ Saturday March 30, 7:30 PM
The Easter Vigil liturgy is the most beautiful liturgy in the Roman Catholic Church. Join us as we start in the Courtyard
with the Lighting of the Paschal Candle at 7:30 PM. During the Mass our RCIA Elect, and Candidates will receive the
Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist; and we will all renew our Baptismal Vows. This Mass
last three hours. A reception will follow in the Hall immediately after Mass to welcome our new members.
Easter Sunday March 31
The Easter celebration will continue with Masses at 7 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM in the Church in English.
There will be an additional English Mass in the Hall at 10:30 AM. Mass in Spanish will be at 2 PM in the Church. There
is no 5 PM Mass on Easter Sunday.
