Dictionary of Cued Speech for American English Preface The NCSA’s Dictionary of Cued Speech for American English is intended to be a useful reference for those seeking to apply the Cued Speech system to American English. It contains roughly 1000 words that, taken together, illustrate the fundamental principles of the Cued Speech system. Notes on pronunciation The pronunciation(s) listed for each word reflect the dialectical variations of Standard American English and are consistent with other online dictionaries of American English such as those provided by MerriamWebster (http://www.merriam-webster.com) and Dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/). If your dialect differs from Standard American English, you may cue some words differently from what appears in this dictionary. However, it is worth noting that many such dialectical variations are best represented by a subtle change in mouthshape without a change in the accompanying cue (since each cue represents a “family” of related speech sounds). As a result, dialectical variations (outside those listed in this dictionary) that require an alternate representation in Cued Speech are somewhat rare; for such cases, we recommend consulting an experienced Cued Speech instructor to confirm the Cued Speech representation of your dialect. For your convenience, pronunciations are listed in two formats: Funetik Spelling and IPA. A pronunciation key (sample words and corresponding cues) for each set of symbols is provided in Cued Speech charts at the end of this document. • Funetik Spelling Chart – p. 33 • International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Chart – p. 34 Notes on cue notation The cue sequence(s) listed for each word are represented in cue notation, which assigns a number to each handshape (1–8, see Cued Speech Chart ) and a letter of the alphabet to each placement (“m” for mouth, “c” for chin, “t” for throat, “s” for side, “sf” for side-forward, and “sd” for side-down). For example, cue notation for the word “hammer” would be 3t5m, indicating that the appropriate cue sequence for the word is handshape 3 at the throat placement followed by handshape 5 at the mouth placement. In the dictionary, spaces are used between cues for clarity and ease of use. Note, however, that when cue notation is used to transcribe multiword sequences, spaces are typically reserved for marking word or phrase boundaries. For example, a longer sequence would be written this way. 5sd 6c8s7m 3m2s6sd4s3s 6t1s 4m 3t5t4s 2t3s 6c-5t. © National Cued Speech Association 2011 Dictionary prepared by J. C. Krause & M. P. Entries (words) are displayed in the first column, with the corresponding pronunciations in the second and third columns (2nd: Funetik Spelling, 3rd: IPA) and cue sequences (in cue notation) in the fourth column. If a word has more than one pronunciation, each pronunciation is listed on a separate line. This is illustrated in the example below; two pronunciations are possible for the word “burrito.” Word burrito Phonemes Phonemes (Funetik spelling) (IPA symbols) Cues /b ur ee t oe/ 4m 5m 5sf /b uh r ee t oe/ 4sd 3m 5sf For a given pronunciation, parentheses (or square brackets for IPA) are used to represent acceptable variations in the phoneme/cue sequence, associated with dialect or convention. For example, the word “body” can be cued as 4sf 1m or 4sf 1t, depending on the convention used to represent the final phoneme in the word. In the dictionary, these variations are denoted 4sf 1m(1t), as shown below. Word Phonemes Phonemes (Funetik spelling) (IPA symbols) /b ah d ee(i)/ body Cues 4sf 1m(1t) Some words have multiple sets of parentheses within them. In such cases, any combination of phonemes/cues noted is acceptable, as long as the cue sequence represents the cuer’s dialect and pronunciation of the word. In the example below, there are four possible cue sequences for the word “division”: 1t 2t 1t 4s, 1sd 2t 1t 4s, 1t 2t 1sd 4s, 1sd 2t 1sd 4s. As with any PDF document, you can scroll through the document or click on the right (left) arrows to show the next (previous) page. In addition, you can navigate through the dictionary in either of the following ways: • • Skip to the next /previous letter of the alphabet by clicking on the links provided.
