JHB Vol. 7, p. 209, April 2, 1746 (unsure if this refers to Burgess John Wilson)
“Mr. Power, according to Order, presented to the House a Bill, For appointing
Commissioners for stating, taking, hearing, and determining the Claims and Demands of
John Wilson, [et al]…Merchants, not exceeding the Sum of Five Pounds, against their
Debtors, whose Accounts were burnt in the Storehouse of the said Merchants; And the
same was received, and read the First Time; and ordered to be read a Second Time.”

“A Bill, For appointing Commissioners for stating, taking, hearing, and determining the

“Ordered that Leave be given to bring in a Bill, for establishing the Town of Staunton, in
the County of Augusta; and it is referred to Mr. Beverley, Mr. Maddison, and Mr.
Wilson, to prepare and bring in the same.
“A Petition of sundry of the Inhabitants of the County of Augusta, was presented to the
House and read, praying, That an Act may pass, for establishing Fairs, in the Town laid
off by Col. William Beverley, at the Court-house in that County; and that the Inhabitants
of the said Town may have and enjoy all the Privileges and Advantages that other Towns
have that are established by Law, and not incorporated:

“A PETITION of Margaret Smith, setting forth, That her Husband, Capt. John Smith,
who commanded at Vaulx’s Fort in Augusta, was either taken Prisoner or killed by the
Enemy, which has reduced her and her numerous Family to very indigent Circumstances,
and praying the Consideration of this House, was presented to the House and read.
“Ordered, That the said Petition be referred to Mr. Randolph, Mr. Wilson, and Mr.
Charles Carter, that they do examine into the Allegations thereof, and report the same,
with their Opinion thereupon, to the House.”

“A Message from the Council by Mr. Walthoe.
“That a Petition of ___ Carlyle had been read in Council, and was referred by them to the
Consideration of this House.
“And the said Petition was read, setting forth, That two of his Horses were taken from
him by a Party of Catawba Indians in Alliance with his Majesty, on their March from the
County of Augusta, to Winchester, and praying to be allowed for his said Horses.
“Ordered, That the said Petition be referred to Mr. Pendleton, Mr. Walker, and Mr.
Wilson, that they do examine into the Allegations thereof, and report the same, with their
Opinion thereupon, to the House.”

JHB Vol. 9, p. 25, Wednesday, the 27th of September. 32 Geo. II, 1757
“A Petition of John Buchanan, setting, forth, That in the Year 1756, he was appointed by
the late Governor Dinwiddie, to examine into the Services actually done by the Officers
and Militia of Augusta County, ordered out for the Protection of our Frontiers, and to
settle the Accounts of Provisions furnished them, and was the same Time instructed to be
very exact in his said Enquiry, and to require proper Vouchers for all the Charges of the
said Militia, and also lodged in his Hands £2500, to be by him disposed of in discharging
those Accounts. That the Petitioner was at great Expense and Trouble in riding about the
said County of Augusta in the Execution of his Office, and in traveling several Times to
Williamsburg to give an Account of his Proceedings, and render his Accounts of the
Disposition of the said £2500, which he performed to the Satisfaction of the Governor
and a Committee, and a Balance of £58 now remains in his Hands: and praying the
consideration of this House for his said Services, having never yet received any
Satisfaction for the same, was presented to the House and read.
“Ordered that the said Petition be referred to Mr. Gabriel Jones, Mr. Martin, and Mr.
Wilson, that they do examine into the Allegations thereof, and report the same with their
Opinions thereupon to the House.”
JHB Vol. 9, p. 28, Thursday, the 28th of September, 32 Geo. II, 1758
“A Petition of Captain James Nevil, in Behalf of himself and the Company under his
Command, setting forth, That on the seventh Instant they had a Skirmish with a Party of
Enemy Indians, in which one of them was killed and scalped by Petitioners, but that upon
Application for the Reward given by Law for an Enemy’s Scalp, they were informed
there was no Money in the Treasury, and praying the Consideration of this House, was
presented to the House and read.
“Ordered, That the said Petition be referred to Mr. Randolph, Mr. Wilson, and Mr.
Jones; That they do examine into the Allegations thereof, and report the same, with their
Opinions thereupon, to the House.”

“A Petition of Peter Menzie; setting forth, That he hath served as a Soldier in the Virginia
Regiment upwards of four years: That in September, 1758, he received a Wound in his
Arm, in an Engagement with the enemy on the Ohio, under the Conduct of Major Grant,
which has rendered him incapable of Procuring his Subsistence, and praying the
Consideration of this House, was presented to the House and read.
“Ordered, That the said Petition be referred to Mr. Bland, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Adams;
that they examine into the Allegations thereof, and report the same, with their Opinions
thereupon, to the House.”
JHB Vol. 9, p. 140, Thursday, the 8th of November, 33 Geo. II, 1759
“A Petition of the Justices, Clerk, and other Inhabitants, of the County of Augusta, setting
forth, That the Court Day of the County, as it at present stands, is very inconvenient to
themselves and others obliged to attend there, and praying that an Act may pass to alter
the Court Day of the said County, was presented to the House and read.
“Ordered, That a Bill be brought in pursuant to the Prayer of the said Petition; and it is
referred to Mr. Christian and Mr. Wilson to prepare and bring in the same.
“Mr. Bland reported, That the Committee to whom the Petition of Peter Menzie was
referred, had had the same under their Consideration, and had agreed upon a Report, and
come to a Resolution thereupon, which he read in his place, and then delivered in at the
Table, where the same were again twice read, and agreed to by the House, as follow:
“It appears to this Committee, That the Petitioner was enlisted as a Soldier in the first
Virginia Regiment: That he always behaved well and as a good Soldier during his
Continuance in that Service: That in the Action on the Ohio, under the Command of
Major Grant, he received a Wound in his left arm, near the Wrist, which shattered both
bones in such a Manner as to render him incapable of getting his Livelihood.
“Resolved, That the said Peter Menzie ought to be allowed the Sum of £30, to be paid by
the Publick, in full Compensation for the Injury he has received by Means of the said
Wound.”

“A Petition of John Dickenson, setting forth, That he hath been informed that he was
lately represented to this House as misbehaving in his Office, he being Captain of a
Company of Rangers; and that for that Reason this House had given Directions to the
Commissioners appointed for settling the Accounts of the ranging Companies, not to
proceed on your Petitioners Accounts till he should acquit himself before this House:
That he is now attending for that Purpose, and praying that the House will take the same
into Consideration, was presented to the House and read.
“Ordered.
“Ordered, That the said Petition be referred to Mr. Christian, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Thomas
Johnson, and Mr. Richard Henry Lee; That they do examine into the Subject Matter
thereof, and report the same, with their Opinion thereupon, to the House.”

“Several Petitions of Henry Orm, John Dony, William Chisam, John Fitzpatrick and
Henry Moxom, late Soldiers of the Virginia Regiment, who have been discharged as
disabled and unfit for Service, and praying Relief, were severally presented to the House
and read.
“Ordered, That the said Petitions be referred to Mr. Washington, Mr. Bland, Mr. Wilson,
and Mr. Christian; that they examine into the Allegations of the said Petitions

“An Account and Claim of Captain Robert Brakenridge, for the Pay of a Company of
Militia draughted out of the County of Augusta, under his Command, was presented to
the House and received.
“Ordered That the same be referred to Mr. Wilson and Mr. Syme; that they examine the
several Articles thereof by the proper Vouchers, and report the same, with their Opinions
thereon, to the House.”

“Mr. Wilson reported that the Committee to whom the Claim of Robert Brackenridge,
late a Captain of the a Company of Militia of the County of Augusts, ordered out in
actual Service, in behalf of himself and Officers and private Men of the said Company,
was referred, had examined into the same, and come to a Resolution thereon, which he
read in his Place and then delivered in at the Table, where it was again twice read, and
agreed to by the House, as follows:
Resolved
“Resolved, That the Sum of £251-18s. is due to the said Company of Militia, at the Rate
allowed by Law, for the Time they continued in actual Service, which ought to be paid by
the Publick.”

A Petition of Halbert McClure was presented to the House…Humbly praying the House
to allow him some annual Support, as he has been brought under these unhappy
Circumstances in the Service and for the Defence of his Country.

And it is referred to Mr. Wilson, Mr. Bowler Cocke, Mr. Archilbald Cary, Mr. Tabb, and
Mr. Thomas Walker.

John Wilson is listed as one of the Burgesses for Augusta Co. for the ______ 1769
session. The second Burgess for Augusta Co. is now Gabriel Jones. The list also shows
that Norfolk also has a Burgess named John Wilson.

“Williamsburg, Wednesday, the 17th May, 1769 About 12 o'clock His Excellency the
governor was pleased, by his messenger, to command the attendance of the House of
Burgesses in the Council chamber, whereupon in obedience to His Lordship's command,
the House, with their speaker, immediately waited upon His Excellency, when he thought
fit to dissolve the General Assembly.
“The late representatives of the people then judging it necessary that some measures
should be taken in their distressed situation, for preserving the true and essential interests
of the colony, resolved upon a meeting for that very salutary purpose, and therefore,
immediately, with the greatest Order and Decorum, repaired to the House of Mr. Anthony
Hay in this City, where being assembled, it was first proposed, for the more decent and
regular Discussion of such Matters as might be taken into Consideration, that a
Moderator should be appointed, and, on the Question being put, Peyton Randolph, Esq;
late Speaker of the House of Burgesses, was unanimously elected.”

The Assembly (former House of Burgesses) sets forth 8 Articles which place limits on the
importation and use of British merchandise.
The signers of this document include John Wilson, Augusta, Thomas Jefferson, and
Patrick Henry.

“Ordered, That a Committee of Propositions and Grievances be appointed.
“And a Committee was appointed of Mr. Bland, Mr. Treasurer, Mr. Edmund Pendleton,
Mr. Archibald Cary, Mr. Richard Henry Lee, Mr. Harrison, Mr. William Digges, Mr.
Lewis Burwell of James City, Mr. Dudley Digges, Mr. Harwood, Mr. Nelson, Mr.
Washington, Mr. West, Mr. John Wilson of Augusta, [14 other men], Mr. Jefferson, [27
other men], And they are to meet and adjourn from Day to Day, and to take into their
Consideration all Propositions and Grievances that shall come legally certified to this
Assembly, and to report their Proceedings, with their Opinions thereupon, from Time to
Time, to the House; and all such Propositions and Grievances are to be delivered to the
Clerk of the House, and by him to the said Committee of Course. And the said
Committee are to have Power to send for Persons, Papers and Records, for their
Information.”

John Wilson, of Augusta (p. xxx) enters into an Association that includes Burgesses and
merchants in and around Williamsburg. The goal of the Association was “the repeal the
act which granted certain duties for the purpose of raising a revenue, and to be relieved
from hardships resulting from the unlimited jurisdiction of the Courts of Admiralty.”
