THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND OF ALEXANDRIA
MESSAGE FROM THE
FOCUS AND LEADERSHIP
DIRECTOR
AND THE
With great excitement we began the year in our new and
award winning “green” T.C. Williams High School. As
always, Scholarship Fund Board of Trustees and staff were
focused on our most basic mission -- to provide college and
financial aid advising and to raise money for scholarships.
As college costs accelerated, the board raised the value of
new and renewal awards from the general fund to $2,000
per year. We plan further award increases for our students as
your donations permit.
The Alexandria community continues to be tremendously
generous, with over 1,600 individuals, businesses and other
organizations opening their wallets and their hearts.
The largest sources of our financial support come from two
main events. The 2007 Fall Telethon was staged in the
newly dedicated Ferdinand Day Commons, as we set a new
Telethon net record of over $130,000, a 25% increase over
2006. Thanks to the gracious support of so many individuals
and businesses in Alexandria, the Spring Gala netted over
$300,000, not quite as much as last year, but a 60% increase
over 2006. On top of this was the $39,000 netted from the
raffle of an extra generous gift of a 2008 Prius donated by
Corporate Partner Jack Taylor. Have we mentioned the giving
spirit of the Alexandria community yet?
I felt like the whole city
was behind me, and to this
day, I refuse to let it down.
CHAIR
Fund donors rightly have tremendous confidence in our
financial stewardship. An impressive 93% of every dollar
raised goes to support our program. Similar confidence
rests in the Fund’s leadership: Represented on our board are
business leaders, educators, a former school board member,
a former city council member, two former and the prospective
Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Presidents, and five SFA
award recipients. Ten board members are T.C. Williams
graduates. The fund has never been in better hands.
Our focus is on providing unequalled post-secondary and
financial aid advising to T.C. Williams students and families,
assisting them with making the best choices to access and
complete higher education. For a third year in a row, we
enjoyed the full-time services of a College Guide, courtesy of
the University of Virginia and the National College Advising
Corps. We are very excited that our 2007-08 Guide, Michelle
Salmiery, will return for a follow-on year with the Fund.
We were pleased to welcome three new Corporate Partners
for 2008: Mirant Potomac River, Speck-Caudron Investments
and the Wachovia Foundation. Additional Corporate Partners
and details on the program may be found on page 21.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the Scholarship
Fund of Alexandria again this year. There is more work to
be done!

LATORIA GILES – INTERIOR DESIGNER
LaToria Giles designs beautiful rooms. She is a kitchen and bath designer for Mid South
Building in Springfield and oversees residential and commercial designs. Recently, she had
the opportunity to apply her skills to a kitchen remodel for an Alexandria City Public School
teacher. LaToria formerly worked for Stuart Kitchens, Inc. on custom kitchens and baths.
A member of the T.C. Williams Class of 1999, LaToria has an impressive resume of
volunteer and extracurricular activities – Jack-n-Jill , 4-H, Peer Mediation, Northern Virginia
Urban League, Zonta Club and Titan Pals to name a few. As President of Future Educators,
she shared her love of art by encouraging at-risk elementary school students to show their
creativity through the visual arts and creative performances. Her artwork was featured in
T.C.’s Labyrinth literary magazine.
LaToria was awarded the Future Educators Scholarship and enrolled in Mary Baldwin
College. Her creative talents prevailed and she graduated with a B.A. in art with an
emphasis in interior design in 2003. While at Mary Baldwin, she continued her tradition
of involvement from T.C. Williams. She served as Chair of the Resident Advisors and was
elected to the President’s Society to lead campus tours and greet prospective students. She
was also senior art editor of a campus magazine. In her senior year, she was fortunate
to study abroad in South Africa, giving her the chance to meet with great leaders such as
Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.
LaToria plans to continue her career as an interior designer and hopes one day to own her
own design firm.

JOHN SILVERWOOD – FIREFIGHTER
“Even when I was very young I wanted to help other people and feel like I was making the
world a better place... I know I feel great helping other people who are in crisis or who
have special needs.” John Silverwood wrote in his scholarship application that his goal was
to become a firefighter. He was awarded the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association
Scholarship when he graduated from T.C. Williams.
John demonstrated a commitment to community and public service from a very young age.
Family and church were strong influences in his life. As a teen, he participated in a mission
trip to rebuild a church in Georgia destroyed by arson. In 2001, he earned the rank of
Eagle Scout and credits his high adventure trips in Maine, the Adirondacks and New
Mexico with helping him to develop leadership skills and to become more self reliant.
John attended Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with a degree in criminal
justice in 2006. After taking an emergency medical services class at the Richmond
Ambulance Authority when he was a freshman, John worked with the West End Volunteer
Rescue Squad for all 4 years of college.
Today John enjoys his dream job as a firefighter assigned to Station 3 on Cameron Mills
Road. His station is only a block from his kindergarten classroom at George Mason
Elementary and less than a mile from T.C. Williams. John loves his work and hopes to spend
his career as a public servant in his home town of Alexandria. He is making our city a safer
place to live and work.

JESSICA URQUIOLA – VIDEO PRODUCER
“Jessica Urquiola represents the very finest of our students. She is a scholar in very tough classes,
a community volunteer with an impressive portfolio of activities, and a leader and instigator of
programs for school and community improvement… I am in constant awe to see this girl in action.”
These words from a high school teacher remain true as Jessica continues to focus her extraordinary
talent and energy to help others.
Jessica’s parents did not have the opportunity to finish college, but they instilled in their daughters
a respect for learning and civic engagement. Jessica attended Patrick Henry Elementary and
Francis C. Hammond Middle School. In ninth grade, she volunteered to tutor in the ESL program
at her church. At T.C. Williams, she volunteered for Alexandria Earth Day, Christmas in April,
the Scholarship Fund’s annual telethon, and other activities. She was president of Z-Club, and a
member of Project Discovery, the Latin American Student Society, and the Spanish Honor Society.
With an award from the Scholarship Fund, Jessica enrolled at George Mason University and later
transferred to the University of Virginia where she earned a B.A. in psychology with minors in
drama and media studies. While in college, Jessica was in the psychology honors program and
conducted research with prison inmates. She wrote film reviews for the student newspaper and
developed a passion for the art of film. Eventually, she went behind the lens, produced and directed
several award-winning films, and had her work screened at the Virginia Film Festival.
After receiving her degree, she returned to Alexandria to do freelance work in film, producing
fundraising videos and documentaries. She later joined the staff of Project Discovery. In 2007,
Jessica began a master’s program for producing film and video at American University. She works
in fundraising for nonprofits at Market Development Group in Washington, D.C. and makes videos
for nonprofits with Soft-Spoken Productions.

THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND OF ALEXANDRIA
One of the proudest
days of my parents’ lives
was the day I received a
general fund scholarship
from The Scholarship
Fund of Alexandria.
—Soraya Yunus
Tisara Photography
SORAYA YUNUS – PHYSICIAN’S ASSISTANT
Soraya’s life story has been filled with obstacles to which she responded with perseverance,
optimism and determination. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, Soraya and her family fled their
beloved country when war broke out and sought refuge in Germany. During the family’s stay in
Cologne, she learned the German language, and when she was 10, she moved again - this time
to Alexandria. “I was frustrated that I had to start all over again and learn another new language
from scratch.” She spent many years in English as a Second Language classes at James K. Polk
and Francis C. Hammond Junior High. “With hard work I was in honors classes by the end of
junior high.”
Soraya blossomed at T.C. Williams where she, “loved the diversity of religions and cultures I was
exposed to.” She was active in German and Latin Clubs. T.C. Williams enabled her to begin her
college education while in high school where she completed four Advanced Placement courses
and gained the discipline and confidence to be successful at the college level. Meanwhile, Soraya
faced another crisis with the failing health of her father who underwent major surgery and years
of medical treatment and unemployment. Soraya’s guidance counselor observed, “She has shown
courage and pluck and she and her mother have supported each other in this stressful situation.”
Soraya knew that she wanted to study for a medical career. Matriculating at George Washington
University meant that she would need to combine her academic scholarships and Pell Grants with
loans and work study to cover the high cost of education. “One of the proudest days of my parents’
lives was the day I received a general fund scholarship from The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria.
My father told everyone. No one in my family believed that a public school could afford to give
future college students a scholarship.”
After completing a B.S. in chemistry, Soraya earned a second B.S. in the Physician’s Assistant
Program at Howard University. She currently lives in Alexandria and works as a physician’s
assistant at Southern Maryland Hospital.

BRYANT WISDOM – SPECIAL PROJECTS MANAGER
DEPARTMENT OF STATE
When asked about the impact that his Scholarship Fund of Alexandria-AFSCME
Scholarship had on his life, Bryant Wisdom says, “I felt like the whole city was behind me,
and to this day, I refuse to let it down.”
A 2001 graduate of T.C. Williams, Bryant was first in his family to attend college. He
credits his mother with instilling in him the goal of attending college, Project Discovery with
giving him the tools to get into college, and the Scholarship Fund for giving him financial
support for four years. “The Fund also helped me find other scholarships and grants.”
Bryant demonstrated an early interest in public service. He served in the Alexandria
Youth Council and spoke to the Virginia General Assembly on teen-related issues. He ran
track and field, participated in Future Business Leaders of America and the Black Student
Association. Bryant wrote in his Scholarship Fund application, “My long-term goal is to
become Mayor of Alexandria and ride that to a Senate seat in the Virginia State Assembly.
I would love to give back as much as possible to this city for helping me grow.”
While earning a B.A. in political science at Christopher Newport University, Bryant
continued his interest in public service. He was treasurer of the NAACP, hosted an Internet
radio show and was on the Model U.N. team for two years. He returns to Alexandria to
volunteer with Project Discovery where he serves as a role model for the next generation
of Alexandria students.
Bryant was offered a position as a shipping specialist in Washington, D.C. at the U.S.
Department of State and was quickly promoted to Special Projects Manager. He manages
overseas moves for ambassadors and Foreign Service officers and troubleshoots when
there are shipment problems.
Look for Bryant Wisdom’s future office in City Hall!

U.S. Green Building Council.
The Honorary Chair, Governor Timothy Kaine,
delivered a video message of support to a packed
ballroom at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center. In
attendance were over 600 parents, alumni, neighbors,
corporate citizens, elected officials and educators, who
came together to share a common goal – supporting the
youth of Alexandria.

The silent auction was once again a hit during cocktail hour. Serious
bidders held their wallets for the live auction after dinner, led by former
Mayor Kerry Donley. The live auction was topped off with a surprise
appearance by T.C. Williams’ grad and Hell’s Kitchen winner, Chef Rock
Harper, who together with the Hotel Monaco and Jackson 20 Chef, Jeff
Armstrong, donated a private dinner for 12 served by Alexandria’s own
Mayor Euille and City Manager James Hartmann.

of the 2008 Patron Saint Award.
Former Mayor of Alexandria, Kerry
Donley served as Athletic Director
of T.C. Williams for the past three
years and has demonstrated the
value of teamwork, school spirit
and commitment to excellence in the
classroom and on the athletic field.
Kerry has served as voice for the
Scholarship Fund, raising thousands
of dollars as co-host of the Fall
Telethon and auctioneer for the
Spring Gala. As auctioneer and host,
Kerry displayed his unique ability to
energize a team of supporters to
join in support of higher education
for Alexandria youth.
THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND OF ALEXANDRIA
2007 FALL TELETHON
What makes the Fall Telethon a record
success year after year? It is the shared
belief that all Alexandria students should
have the opportunity to pursue higher
education and the knowledge that it takes
a commitment from the entire community
to realize that goal. The Telethon is made
possible through the generosity of Comcast
which provides the air-time and equipment
for the five-hour live broadcast from the
“new” T.C. Williams..

MEETING THE GROWING NEED
The Telethon succeeds because of the
enthusiasm of Clark Mercer, T.C. Williams
Class of '98, who volunteered his time
to chair the event—and the seasoned
talents of T.C. parent, Pat Smith, who
orchestrated a thousand details to make
the program run smoothly. Many thanks
to the hard work of student volunteers from
Project Discovery, Building Better Futures,
and Key Club. Special thanks to the
amazing crew from T.C.'s TV production
class, the volunteers that process pledges,
the Alexandria Jaycees, and the hundreds
of alumni, business leaders, community
organizations, parents and elected officials
who make this event possible.
The Fall Telethon is a team effort that
crosses political and social lines of our
community. Back by popular demand,
our hosts were Julie Carey, Kerry Donley,
and David Speck (all ACPS parents). The
Telethon proves that even small gifts, if
there are enough of them, can make a
huge difference. With the support of more
than 1,000 pledges the Telethon netted a
new record of $137,000.

MEETING THE GROWING NEED

LEAVE A LEGACY. JOIN THE TITAN LEGACY CLUB.
If you are reading the Annual Report, it’s likely that your life or the life of someone you know has
been touched by the Scholarship Fund. Perhaps you have been a donor to the Fund, or a scholarship
recipient or, like us, the parents of students who received scholarships. The SFA has given out thousands
of scholarships over the last 23 years and it intends to give out thousands more in the future.
One way to help the Fund continue in its mission is through planned giving. The term “planned giving”
refers to charitable gifts that require some planning before they are made. Planned gifts are popular
($20 billion in 2002) because they can provide valuable tax and other benefits. There are numerous
ways to structure planned gifts, with the most common of these being a designation through a will or
trust or by making the SFA a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. You could
leave a legacy by funding a scholarship, or many scholarships.
A couple of years ago, Ellen Harmon, a recently retired T.C. teacher, confided to the SFA’s Director,
Susan Yowell, that she had included the SFA in her will. Susan asked Ellen to write about it in this
publication, which she did and we read. Recently, we were making some changes to our wills and
it occurred to us that we were in a position to make some planned gifts to groups we cared about,
including the SFA. When we told our neighbors, Jim and Christine Garner (T.C. class of 1979), they
too were in the process of working on their wills and they too included the SFA.
This Report highlights the many gifts that have been made in the past year to the SFA. What the SFA
would also like to do, is to begin to recognize those who have made planned gifts. We know you are
out there and we thank you very much for your support. Let us know who you are by contacting the
SFA. If you make a planned gift in the future, please contact us then, too. Remembering the Titans with
a planned gift is a great way to ensure the continued success of the SFA and the thousands of students
whom it has helped to get a college education.
