THE METAL FOR THE FUTURE Energy storage applications could dramatically increase demand growth The main problem with current alternative energy production (wind, solar) is the lack of storage capability required for off-peak usage. Vanadium is the future metal in batteries due to its low self-discharge, long lifespan and ability to provide grid-level electricity storage. Growing global demand for vanadium Vanadium is an essential ingredient in the steel industry as a strengthening and anticorrosion additive. Growing use of high strength steel and new battery solutions (Vanadium Redox Battery) drive the increasing demand for vanadium. Vanadium is also used in tool steel alloys, titanium alloys and chemicals. World class resource with excellent exploration potential. Current ore reserve of 99 million tonnes in the old pit supports over 30 years of production at mining rate of 3.25 million tonnes per annum. The magnetite gabbro extends 15 km to the west of the pit with significant exploration potential. Conventional processing method reduces technology risk Concentrating involves conventional crushing and grinding followed by wet magnetic separation. The concentrate is then converted into iron metal and vanadium slag through smelt-reduction process. The refining process converts the vanadium slag into ferrovanadium. Mining with care Mustavaaran Kaivos Oy strives to extract the maximum amount of useful products from the ore at minimal environmental impact. Our plan is to use biomass in the production of energy and charcoal, which can partly replace fossil coal as reductant in the smelt-reduction process. In our process we can also recycle waste slag from steel mills. Office: Asemakatu 37, FI-90100 Oulu, Finland Tel. +358 8 370 090 Email: [email protected] www.mustavaarankaivos.com
