A Weekly Publication for the People of Queen’s | Volume 21 | Number 18 | April 30, 2012 EOM Jocelyn Guitang Causes Good Drama on T10 1. 2. March Employee of the Month Jocelyn Guitang, LPN, QET 10 Postpartum/Nursery, credits Cindy Kamikawa, RN, VP of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer, as the catalyst to her long career at Queen’s. Cindy was Jocelyn’s first supervisor on Pauahi 2 in 1985 when she was a nurse’s aide. “I was already working on preparing for my LPN boards,” Jocelyn recalled. “Cindy encouraged me and would talk to me about it as she helped me with my work. Her act of kindness led me to just keep going.” Cindy’s support has remained steadfast through the years as both she and Jocelyn grew professionally in their own ways. Jocelyn recently had the opportunity to shadow Cindy in her executive role for a leadership course that will lead to the completion of her BSN degree. “I al4. ways wanted to get my BSN, but when I became a mom, I put it on hold for a while. I didn’t want to miss out on my own son’s childhood. Now he is grown and we were college students at the same time!” Jocelyn has worked in Maternity Services for many years now. “I love taking care of the beginning of life,” she said. “I love helping the babies and the happy new parents.” Back in the “old days” when maternity was located on ‘Iolani, mothers and babies had separate nurses. “Times have certainly changed,” Jocelyn remarked. Today she serves as a “Joceof-all-trades,” pinch hitting wherever she is needed most. She’s the circumcision nurse, surgical scrub tech, teaches the baby bath class, and, with the recent retirement of the newborn hearing screener, Jocelyn has added that duty to her repertoire. The only LPN on the unit, she has even been known to work in Labor and Delivery on the other side of QET 10, leading the way for an upcoming new, floor-wide cross-training program. 3. 1. Jocelyn elicits a kiss from husband Marlow, who is an electrician and jack-of-all-trades in General Maintenance. 2. A fan of Korean TV dramas, Jocelyn watches one starring herself made by coworkers. 3. Corene Sasaki, RN, QET 10 created much of the dramathemed decor for the EOM party. 4. The drama queens of Queen’s. At her Employee of the Month party, coworkers surprised Jocelyn with a Korean drama theme, echoing one of her passions. “I can’t help it,” she laughed. “It re(Continued on page 2.) Dimes for Babies Nancy Valla, RN, Director of Inpatient Services, reports on the success of the March for Babies Walk held on Sunday, April 22 in Kapi‘olani Park: “In December, EOM Jocelyn Guitang (Continued from page 1.) ally draws you in, the way they frame the shots and zoom in on the facial expressions.” She cheerfully joined her friends in striking a few of those dramatic poses for some Print Connection photos. Her fans had also prepared a slide show of fun photos with the background song Smile by Uncle Kracker. With lyrics like, “You’re better than the best. I don’t know how I lived without you…I’m lucky to just linger in your light… Oh you make me smile,” the song seemed to express everything coworkers feel about Jocelyn. “As the unit changes, Jocelyn is pulled in many directions and is always cheerful and willing to support in any way,” reads one nomination. Managers Nicole Akana, RN, MSN and Tina Harvell, RN, MSN, said in support of Jocelyn’s nomination: “The most common three words her peers and managers use to describe Jocelyn are: loyal, thorough, and flexible. Jocelyn continues to deliver high quality, safe nursing care to all our patients in Labor and Delivery, Post Partum, and Newborn Nursery. She is quick to lend a hand and never complains.” Though school work is her main focus outside of Queen’s these days, Jocelyn continues to play the organ at her church every Thursday and Sunday. “It’s like another full time job,” she admitted, when adding up the hours put in to practice with the children’s junior and senior choirs in preparation for church services. “But it kind of helps to hold me together.” She also enjoys participating in league bowling and volleyball, also with her Waipahu church group. “We’ve been the champion team for a few years now,” she revealed. After all these years (27 if you’re counting!) Jocelyn says Queen’s is like family. She said, “Getting to shadow Cindy recently let me see the whole picture of the Queen’s organization. Not to be trite, but it was awesome to see the collaboration that goes into making it work. I love working here.” 2 we were happy to learn that Queen’s was a Statewide Bronze Sponsor for the 2012 March for Babies. Since then, our team captains, Silvia Jager Lo and Deb Trankel worked night and day to do Queen’s 1. proud. We set a big goal of $5,000 and 100 registered walkers and exceeded both. Our team captains, along with Jennifer Mulholland, Rocky Lee, Nicole Akana, Sharon Caneda and I had to get creative. It was an incredible team effort from the Women’s Health Center, Labor & Delivery, Post Partum, Nursery, Sodexo, Harkness Cafe, Cafe Aloha, the Gift Shop, Magnet Carts and physicians. Money is still coming in! For those of you who were not able to attend…, consider this: it was Sunday morning, a team picture at 6:30 am, rain, a five mile walk starting at 7:30 am… and we had a blast! It was lots of work to prepare for, but well worth it. We will do anything for the babies! Glad it’s over, but ready to do it again next year!” 2. 3. 1.
