Each year, students from 50 surrounding communities attend the school, giving strong testimony to the school’s widespread reputation for educational excellence. The school was founded in 1906 by Queene Ferry (Mrs. Avery) Coonley, whose desire to offer an alternative to traditional public institutions was inspired by the educational philosophy of John Dewey and other progressive thinkers of her day. This philosophy is based on the concept that school should encourage a child to become an enthusiastic participant in the learning process. Mrs. Coonley began her first school in a cottage on the Coonley Estate in Riverside, Illinois. The present school facility was built in 1929. It received listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Reflecting the belief that education is a lifelong process, the school seeks to instill a sense of joy and excitement about learning at an early age. Hallmarks of an Avery Coonley School education include small class size, an accomplished and dedicated faculty, and a wide spectrum of learning opportunities. The challenging curriculum is designed to foster critical and creative thinking, self-reliance, and concern for others. 2 Evening Schedule 7:00 P.M. Thank you! 3 Welcome Dear Friends of the Avery Coonley School, It is our pleasure and honor to welcome you to the 34th Annual Avery Coonley School Auction! Tonight Floraison celebrates the transformational journeys that we witness both in nature and in our school. Mrs. Coonley valued the impact nature and natural beauty can have on a child’s education. She also recognized that, given the right circumstances, children also grow, develop, and blossom in amazing ways. This evening we celebrate and support our beautiful school and the educational experience and opportunities that it provides. This incredible event is only possible because of the hard work of countless dedicated and talented volunteers, generous donors, remarkable administrators, faculty and staff, and of course you, our guests. Working and giving together, we continue the legacy of Queene Ferry Coonley to support our students as they bloom into positive, productive and respectful members of society. We would like to give special recognition to this year’s auction chairs, Deb McGarry and Barnali Khuntia. Their leadership, hard work, and passion have been the driving force behind this year’s wonderful event. We thank you and the many volunteers on your committees who have worked so tirelessly to make tonight a success! Thank you, our special guests, for supporting the Avery Coonley School tonight. We hope you have a wonderful evening! With appreciation and best wishes, Paul Druzinsky Head of School Patrick Fry Chair, Board of Trustees 4 THANK YOU with sincere appreciation the donors and volunteers on the following pages are gratefully acknowledged for generously supporting floraison. With Thanks Welcome to Floraison! After many hours of meeting, planning, wrapping, writing, and shopping the 34th Annual Avery Coonley School Auction is finally here. We have truly enjoyed working on the auction with an exceptionally talented and dedicated group of volunteers. These volunteers gave their time, talent and energy to perfect tonight’s festivities. We give you our most heartfelt thanks. Without the philanthropic support of our donors, this event would not be possible. We wish to recognize the generosity of our parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, friends and the business community for each and every donation. Thank you for your support. Throughout the many months of planning, the students of ACS were always in our minds and provided us the motivation to make this event a success. So please join us as we CELEBRATE OUR CHILDREN’S BRIGHT AND LIMITLESS FUTURES. As you think of your own favorite ACS children, we encourage you to bid high and bid often! Merci! Special thanks for extraordinary support of the Auction goes to Steven Bosco as Director of Technology, Chris Portman as Director of Communications, and Andrew McCormick as Director of Maintenance and his staff for their dedication. Special recognition is shared with the members of the faculty, who in dedicated service to the students, are the foundation of this community. Most importantly, the students of ACS bring intelligence, energy, and joy to ACS each day. They are the inspiration for the Auction. WITH HEARTFELT APPRECIATION FROM THE OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT: Tammy Bristol, Development Services Coordinator Kathleen Flynn, Special Events Coordinator Shannon Horn ’06, Alumni Relations Coordinator Carolyn Johnson, Director of Development 7 Fleur De Lis Society The Fleur de Lis Society is comprised of benefactors who provide philanthropic support to the Auction at a leadership level of $1,000 or more. The Society, established in 1990, is critical to the fundraising success of this event, which ultimately funds the annual operating needs of the school. Sincere appreciation is shared with all contributors to the Fleur de Lis Society. This year we were excited to offer a Matching Challenge as part of Fleur de Lis. Five families established a fund of up to $25,000, which was used to enhance the gifts of new donors as well as those who increased their level of support from previous years. Donors stepped up to the challenge and helped ACS secure the full $25,000 in additional support! This year's donations to Fleur de Lis, exceeding $130,000, set an all-time high mark for Fleur de Lis giving -- a wonderful testament to our school's philanthropic spirit, particularly in a year faced with the additional fundraising needs of our capital campaign. If no restrictions are provided, all services must be used within one year of the Auction (April 22, 2017). Auction donors are extremely generous. Please do not request changes to the items offered. Any questions about the item should be directed to the ACS Office of Development. 73 Rules and Information RULES REGARDING VACATION PROPERTIES Donors of vacation properties are sharing a very special possession with the Auction. All successful bidders of these properties are asked to treat these places with exceptional care and respect. Auction properties are non-transferable and must be used by the winning bidders. Many donors have asked that arrangements be made through the Office of Development. If so, this will be indicated on the bearer letter. Purchasers of properties may be asked to provide a refundable security deposit and to sign an indemnification form and/or a use agreement with the donor. A nominal cleaning charge may also be required. All properties are non-smoking and no pets are allowed. There may be other specific restrictions that will be presented on the bearer letter to the winning bidder. SILENT AUCTION Greater Giving, an online bidding system, will be used to facilitate bidding on all Silent Auction items. Guests will use their personal smartphones to access Greater Giving’s website to participate in the Silent Auction. Guests can browse the Silent Auction area, view items on their phones, and bid from anywhere at any time during the evening. Auction properties are nontransferable and must be used by the winning bidders. Greater Giving will allow guests to: Place maximum bid amounts. Receive outbid alerts. View items with no bids. Receive notification of items won. Assistance will be available throughout the evening. The Silent Auction will open at 7:00 P.M. and will close at 10:15 P.M. PARTY BOUTIQUE RULES The Party Boutique is a slot auction of themed events hosted by ACS families. Each guest slot is available for purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please note: Numbered slots will be available for each event as determined by the host. Guests can purchase a slot through Greater Giving. Guests may buy as many slots as are available. If a minimum number of slots are not sold for a party, the event will be canceled. Purchasers of these events will be offered a refund. CLASS BASKET AND LET’S EAT OUT! RAFFLES Sales for all raffles end at 10:00 P.M. and no additional tickets may be added to boxes after 10:15 P.M., at which time the winners will be drawn. Winners will be identified on the bid board. The Office of Development will contact any winners who are not present and arrange for pick-up of their prize(s). Otherwise, winners must claim their prize(s) at the Auction at the end of the evening. 74 Rules and Information WINE AND DINE RAFFLE Sales for this raffle will end when no wine bottles remain. The wine bottles won by attendees will be designated as such and held at the checkout desk for pick-up at the end of the evening. PAYMENT AND MERCHANDISE PICKUP Upon arrival, guests will be required to register their credit card at the Check-In table anytime between 7:00 and 9:00 P.M. Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, and American Express are accepted. Cash and checks will not be accepted as payment the night of the Auction. Winning bidders will automatically be notified on their mobile device and will be charged in full for any items won on Auction night. Beginning at 10:15 P.M. guests can claim their items at the check-out. Any bidder not satisfying payment criteria will forfeit the right to purchase the item. All Auction items must be taken the evening of the Auction. A signature on a pickup verification form is required prior to receiving a certificate. All purchasers will receive a receipt of purchases the week following the Auction. TAX DEDUCTIBILITY OF PURCHASES The Internal Revenue Code requires the Avery Coonley School to inform Auction patrons of the tax deductibility of their Auction contributions. With respect to any contribution to the Avery Coonley School or any purchase made, if Auction patrons receive goods or services, the contribution is deductible for federal income tax purposes only to the extent that its value exceeds the fair market value of the goods or services received. For purposes of determining the tax deductibility for the purchase of Auction items, the following is advised: Dollar values listed in this catalog and its addendum are as stated by the donor or are the Auction committee’s good faith estimate of each item’s fair market value. If there is no stated dollar value to an item, the postauction statement from the school will include the school’s good faith estimate of value of any item for which the school is able to make such an estimate. If no good faith estimate of value can reasonably be made for an item, its fair market value is the price at which it is sold. The cost of raffle tickets is not tax deductible. Raffle prizes that are (a) $600 or more and (b) at least 300 times the amount of the wager are considered taxable income. The school is required to file a W2G tax form. Forms will be distributed to raffle winners for whom tax reporting is required on Auction night. Completion of the form is required before the prizes can be released to the winner. A tax advisor should be consulted for further explanation or advice as to the tax deductibility of contributions to the Avery Coonley School. 75 Thank You to Our Sponsors First Point Mechanical Services, LLC is Chicagoland’s leading HVAC Service Company.
