Third Sunday in Lent
Enduring Presence, goal and guide, you go before and await our coming. Only
our thirst compels us beyond complaint to conversation, beyond rejection to
relationship. Pour your love into our hearts, that, refreshed and renewed, we
may invite others to the living water given to us in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Third Sunday in Lent

Thirsty
The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge writes, “Water, water everywhere, nor
any drop to drink,” words from a sailor challenged to find a way to quench
his thirst amid the salty sea water. Fresh water is essential to human
survival, re-minding us of the ordinary nature of the story in John’s Gospel
today: thirsty people coming to a well to find water.
Yet, as we have noted throughout the season of Lent, God again
demonstrates how we might find the spark of the Spirit in the ordinary
things of life. Water is needed for survival, but as Jesus reminds the woman,
everyone who drinks of it will be thirsty again. Life has the need for water,
but also the thirst for something more: “a spring of water gushing up to
eternal life.”
What is extraordinary in this conversation is not only that Jesus speaks of
his water as eternal and life giving, but that Jesus speaks at all to the person
who approaches him at the well. For we hear that she is a Samaritan and a
woman—two categories of outsiders with whom no self-respecting Jewish
man of his day would have a conversation. Yet maybe this is another
example of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, a Spirit that would
abolish boundaries and stigmas to share life with all who come seeking.

Third Sunday in Lent
March 19, 2017
We welcome all members and guests to our service today on this Third
Sunday in Lent. We are glad that you have come to worship at Calvary
this morning!
Please make a special effort to greet those around you in the spirit of
Christian fellowship. As the red Ritual of Friendship pad is passed,
kindly take a moment to write down your name, address and phone
number. If you are our guest today, please fill out a visitor card and
place it in the offering plate and pick up one of the visitor’s bags in the
narthex! During the prelude, you are invited to enter a spirit of
reverence and quiet reflection as we prepare to worship the Lord. We
kindly request that you silence all phones and pagers. Hearing aid
devices are available in the narthex; one of the ushers will be happy to
assist you.

Today is the Third Sunday in Lent, which began on Ash Wednesday,
March 1. Lent is a period of 40 days (excluding Sundays) until Easter
(April 16). Lent recalls the events leading up to the passion of our Lord and
should be a time of self-examination as we consider our own unworthiness
in the face of the Lord’s love displayed in his suffering and dying for us.
The liturgical color for Lent is purple, symbolizing penitence.
We thank Dr. Mark Biggam, guest oboist, and our organist, Mrs. Mary
Louise Kapp Peeples, for their musical contributions to today’s service. Dr.
Biggam is a member of Calvary.
The Winter/Spring season for Calvary @ The Table continues this
Wednesday, March 22! Dinner will be held at 5:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall
(menu: Chili and salad). A variety of programs will begin at 6:00 p.m. A
nursery is available each Wednesday from 5:45-7:15 p.m. We hope you
will join your fellow members for this weekly series which continues
through April 5.
The next Calvary Moravian Friends event is scheduled for Saturday,
March 25, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. C.M.F. is pleased to present
“The Giannini Brass in Concert.” The Giannini Brass delights, entertains,
and amuses audiences with a blend of musical styles, including patriotic
marches, Big Band Swing, Dixieland, Light Classical, and Broadway! They
are a local ensemble that performs throughout the United States and Europe.
This will be an extremely entertaining program for our community right
here in Winston-Salem. Help us “spread the word” about this most
enjoyable afternoon! Copies of color posters, similar to the one included in
your bulletin today, are available from the church office if you would like to
post them.
2017 Lenten Day of Prayer services continue this week. This Wednesday,
March 22, Calvary will have its Day of Prayer service at 11:00 a.m. The
speaker will be The Reverend Dr. Nola Reed Knouse, Director of the
Moravian Music Foundation. A reception will precede the service,
beginning at 9:45 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.
Attention Easter Band players! The first rehearsal of the Easter Band will
be held next Sunday, March 26, beginning promptly at 2:15 p.m. in the
sanctuary of Home Church. Additional rehearsals will be held on the
following two Sundays, April 2, and April 9 (Palm Sunday). Band players
are requested to attend all three rehearsals if at all possible.
