Untitled - Birmingham City University

Hello there,
Congratulations on your results and welcome to the Faculty of Health! We are looking forward to
introducing you to University life and to help you settle in to your course and new environment. This
is a really great place to study. Two years ago we were fortunate enough to refurbish and reopen
one of the buildings on our site, which allowed us to move our entire Faculty onto the City South
Campus here in leafy Edgbaston. We continue to invest heavily in our learning environment and our
buildings and equipment. Our library is the largest Nursing reference library in the country.
Everyone is always a bit nervous about starting university - this is a good sign - it means you are keen
to do well and to make the most of the great opportunity you have. Don't worry - everyone here is
really friendly and we will do all we can to help you to settle in quickly. Your personal tutor is a key
person to get to know in the first few weeks - they can help with any queries, worries or concerns, or
will be really pleased to hear how much you are enjoying things.
I hope that you will find all you need in this information pack. Why not log on to the university website http://bcu.ac.uk where you will see updates and notices and the faculty website
http://www.bcu.ac.uk/health where you can view virtual tours and hear what other students have
to say on our “student talk” pages? Our student and staff intranet iCity https://icity.bcu.ac.uk/ is
the key place to find faculty related information - you will see my latest blog when you arrive.
I will see you at some point in your first few weeks - I normally come and do a welcome to all new
students.
Finally - I wish you the best of luck for the start of your course. You are now a part of the Faculty of
Health and Birmingham City University academic community and we look forward to working in
partnership with you to help you succeed.
With best wishes
Professor Ian Blair
Executive Dean

Before you come to the University
You will be asked to complete an online pre-enrolment, which is the first part of the
enrolment process
Online Enrolment
We will contact you by e-mail, using the contact email address you provided in your
application, asking you to complete an online enrolment process before you come to the
University. To do this you will need to log in to the University’s ‘mySRS’ portal, which is
the web portal for the University’s student record system.
As part of your online enrolment we will ask you to:





check your name, contact details and addresses are correct;
confirm your current highest qualification (e.g. A level, BTEC, HND etc);
provide details of an emergency contact;
if you are happy to do so, confirm your equal opportunity information – this includes
information about your ethnicity and details of any disabilities you may have;
confirm whether the Student Loan Company, the NHS, your employer or another
sponsor will be paying your fees – we will ask you to provide evidence of this, such
as a letter from the Student Loan Company or your employer.
If you don’t complete your online enrolment we will send you regular e-mail reminders
asking you to do so. It’s really important that you complete your online enrolment before
you attend your on-campus enrolment session. Please remember that if you cannot be
enrolled on the day of your on-campus enrolment session this may cause delays in the
release of your maintenance loan and/or grant.
You can email the University’s Academic Registry at [email protected] if you
have any queries about the online enrolment process.
Accommodation
The University offers accommodation at various locations throughout Birmingham. If you are
eligible to apply for accommodation you will need to do as soon as possible in order to
secure a place in one of our halls of residence. You can find out more about our

the Registration desk in front of you to your left. The staff here will guide you
through your enrolment process. Please remember to bring your original
identification and qualification certificates along with a copy. We will need to see
these in order to get you fully enrolled and give you your University access card
which you will need to come into the building in future and also to use the University
library facilities.
Once you are enrolled you will be measured for your uniform. You will then be able
to access an introduction to the Faculty, chat to representatives of the Students
Union and browse around some exhibitor stands which may be of interest to you.
You will need to bring the following original documents plus a photocopy of each with
you to your on-campus enrolment session:

Proof of identity. This must be an original (not a photocopy) of one of the
following documents: Passport; UK birth certificate (and original marriage
certificate if your name has changed through marriage); EU National Identity
Card.

Original certificates or official results notification for all the qualifications required
to meet the conditions of our offer, unless the University has confirmed that it
has already seen these. Additionally if you hold any other qualifications at level 3
or above (e.g. A levels, BTEC HNC/HND, Access courses etc), although they
are not required for entry to the course, these should be presented at your
enrolment.

Evidence of sponsorship if a sponsor, such as an employer, is paying your fees.
If you have secured a tuition fee loan or grant from Student Finance England,
you will need to bring your Student Finance Entitlement letter. If you are paying
your own fees you will be required to make a payment as a condition of
enrolment in accordance with our Fee Payment Policy. The policy can found at:
http://www.bcu.ac.uk/about-us/corporate-information/policies-and-procedures. If
you do not pay your fees in full at enrolment you will also be required to sign up
to a payment plan for the balance of your fees.

Your original DBS certificate (if this has not already been sent to Admissions).
University Email Address
When you have enrolled you will be given a personal University student e-mail address
which will be used for ALL communications with you so please remember to check it
regularly.
iCity
iCity provides a single point of access for everything you need when starting at the
University. It is the default web page on all University computers and allows quick and easy
access to key services including: printing; email; IT Service Desk; Library and Student
Services. Important Faculty and University information is communicated via iCity in the form
of news, notices and events listings. You can also access all your course-related
information.
Tuition fees and financial support
Eligible UK and EU students who have a place on a NHS-funded course will normally have
their tuition fees paid on their behalf.
Information on financial support for tuition fees and/or living costs which may be available for
your course can be found at:
www.bcu.ac.uk/student-info/finance-and-money-matters/financial-support
Or, if your course is eligible for an NHS bursary, details can be found at:
http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students
Information about your programme of study
Campus information and facilities
Your programme is based on the City South Campus of the University.
Catering
There is a restaurant (Café South), a Costa Coffee and a Student Union bar and shop on campus.
Car Parking
Very limited student car parking is available at the rear of the main campus building (accessed via
Westbourne Road) for a charge of £2 per day. It is not recommended that you park on the roads
around the campus as any spaces are limited to 1 hour and there is a zero tolerance policy operated
by the City Council traffic wardens who continuously patrol this area.
As car parking on the City South campus is so limited we strongly recommend that you use
alternative methods of transport. The campus is very well served by public transport. The Travel
Line West Midlands website will help you identify the most straight forward public transport from your
home.
You will need to enter your home postcode and the campus postcode which is B15 3TN. This will
take you to the front of the Seacole Building on Westbourne Road. As there is a one way system on
the roads immediately around the campus, you may find it easier to use the bus stop on Harborne
Road, which can be accessed by a footpath between numbers 44 and 46. If this is the case the
postcode you will need to use is B15 3HE.

We realise that it’s difficult to take everything in during your first few weeks with us so

sometimes be asked to swipe your card to record your attendance at teaching sessions. We
want to make sure that you get the best out of your studies and monitoring your attendance will
help us to see whether you may need additional support and guidance at times.
