Catholic Cathedral College Newsletter / Pānui o Te Kura March 17, 2017 2017 Theme: In the Way of Mary Dear Parents and Caregivers, Nau mai haere mai. Talofa lava. Mālo ē lelei. Kumusta. Fr Benito from Christ the King Parish visited this week and celebrated Mass for two Year 9 classes in the Library and blessed the statue of Mary which helps us with our focus for 2017: “In the Way of Mary”. We aim to invite all our local Parish Priests to visit and meet our students and teachers over the course of the year. On Friday we mark St Patrick’s Day and will be raising money for the Caritas mission in Kiribati. This small group of Islands on the Equator is clearly experiencing the impact of global warming and rising sea levels. Drinking water on the main Island is in very short supply and is gathered from rainfall. After long periods with little rain, there is not enough drinkable water. We hope that our contribution to the Caritas project will make an impact for the local people. The early finish on Friday for year 9 & 10 students is to enable all teachers to have their first meeting with the senior students being mentored by that teacher through this year. This mentoring has had a significant impact on the academic success of our students. The information that we cover at this interviews is published on Kamar and can be accessed by parents through the Kamar portal. At this stage we are asking each senior student to set realistic academic goals and the teacher mentor will discuss these with each student. It is certainly appropriate for parents to also discuss these goals. From the end of Term 1 all senior students will have results recorded on Kamar for their first achievement standards in each subject. The 70 students that have been rehearsing for Polyfest have their big day on Saturday. Our College has been allocated the last slot of the day. This is because the organisers feel that the crowds will want to stay to see the best performance! Our students will perform about 4pm, but it will pay to be there earlier as it may take some time to walk from the carpark. The venue this year is the corner of New Brighton Rd and Locksley Street in Dallington. I am impressed with the dedication, effort and determination the large group of students have displayed. May God bless you all, Tony Shaw Rick Stone DRS - RE Department The Angelus devotional prayer The Angelus is a short practice of devotion in honour of the Incarnation repeated three times each day, morning, noon, and evening, at the sound of the bell. This wonderful prayer evolved from a recitation of three Hail Mary’s following an evening bell around the 12th century to its present form (with morning and midday recitations) in the 16th century. When prayed in a group setting a leader recites the verses and everyone recites both the responses and the Hail Mary’s in between each verse as shown below Although the Angelus has been traditionally said three times daily, at 6 am, noon and 6 pm, you can pray it at anytime! V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with Thee; Blessed art thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary, etc. V. And the Word was made Flesh. R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, etc. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. LET US PRAY Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen. Marist Brothers Jubilee MARIST BROTHERS’ JUBILEE CHRISTCHURCH Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd September 2017 We are setting this weekend aside to commemorate the Founding of the Marist Brothers by St Marcellin Champagnat in France 200 years ago. Marcellin was a Marist Father who had been ordained only six months earlier but saw that the young people of his area were completely lacking any education and resolved to start a teaching Order of men who could resolve this situation. The library was kindly set up by Ms. Zapanta, Mr. Stone and senior students. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Father Benito and students from the Year 9 classes prepared and read the readings. After the mass was celebrated, Father Benito blessed the Mother Mary icon in the library. The school's theme this year is "In the Way of Mary" and therefore, it is important for the school community to have a good view of Mother Mary inside and outside of the library to remind us of our good mother who willingly said "YES" to her faith. A huge thank you to the Year 9 classes and their teachers, Ms. Zapanta, Mr. Stone, to all the students who helped out, and a special thank you to Father Benito. Lee Nanai-Stewart – Deputy Principal Kia Ora koutou, Tālofa lava, Kamusta, Mālō e lelei, Bula Vinaka, It has been a busy and productive start to a new academic year. We as a College endeavor to inspire and lead all of our students to develop their spiritual, academic, cultural and sporting abilities and to be the best that they can be in all areas. All students should now be well into their academic year, aiming high and setting up good study habits that will enable them to achieve the very best results they can. To support our senior students to reach their potential they will have a teacher who will mentor them through their senior years at the College. Their Vertical Mentor will take a more active role in the responsibility of their success by supporting and guiding them. In addition, the student is also supported by subject teachers, the Pastoral Care team and school leadership. The mentoring process allows parents/caregivers to be a part of their child’s learning journey. Further details about our mentoring process for senior students and the involvement of parents/caregivers will be emailed/mailed to parents over the next two weeks. The mentoring process starts with senior students reflecting on 2016, setting goals for 2017 and developing strategies to achieve their goals. Senior students have been emailed details of how to enter their goals on their student portal. Following this they will meet with their Vertical Mentor on Friday 17th March 2017 to discuss the goals they have set. Learning how to set SMART Goals (http://topachievement.com/smart.html) and achieving them is something we can all do. I encourage you to talk to your child about what they would like to achieve this year. I think mentoring is an understanding between two or more people. It is a way for people to learn from each other. Even though most think mentors are older, I think it's a bond and no matter age, race, or gender. It's a way for people to communicate! Kristene Burns-Saraiva Ngā mihi nui, Lee Nanai-Stewart Rachel Hogan – Assistant Principal, Teaching & Learning NCEA Assessment Handbook 2017 All Year 11, 12 and 13 students have been provided with a National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Student Handbook for 2017. This handbook outlines the procedures and conditions for the study of NCEA at Catholic Cathedral College. Students will be provided with specific course information by their subject teachers. This will outline details of the standards to be assessed including their credit value, whether they are to be internally or externally assessed and approximately when they are to be assessed. External assessments are NZQA examinations that are held in November and December. NCEA internally assessed tasks will have a minimum of one week’s notice of completion date or test date. Students are required to co-ordinate assessment information and carefully plan their study time to ensure that they are prepared to meet their subjects’ assessment deadlines, especially when assessments fall close together, which is sometimes unavoidable due to the large number of subject choices offered at Catholic Cathedral College. Where an NCEA assessment is missed due to illness, a medical certificate is required. For all other absences, prior notification to Mrs Hogan is required, this may or may not result in a later assessment opportunity being available depending on the reason. Please refer to the NCEA Student Handbook. Students are expected to attend all assessments and examinations and personally carry out a satisfactory course of study and practical work for each subject. Absences may prevent a student achieving at a level that represents his/her ability. When a student is absent from school it is his/her responsibility to catch-up on work missed and to find out any assessment deadlines advised during the period of absence. The satisfactory completion of an NCEA course requires students to attend school until mid-November 2017, after which the external examinations follow. A copy of the NCEA Student Handbook along with further information on NCEA related matters can be found on the school’s website under Courses > NZQA Course Information. http://www.sporty.co.nz/cathcollege/Learning/NCEA Thank you for your support. Reader/Writers Required Volunteers are needed for senior student assessment assistance. We are currently looking for members of the school community to support some of our senior students with NCEA assessments. This may take the form of being a reader, writer or supervision of computer use. You must have neat writing and be able to spell accurately Applicants will have a police check and be trained in this process. Please contact the school office 9821690 or email [email protected] if you are interested in helping our students in this area. School Swimming Sports Our school swimming sports were on Thursday afternoon at Waltham Pool. Year 7-9 students walked down to the pool and back again and enjoyed a spectacular day of sunshine. . Young Vinnies Morning Tea Earlier this week our CCC Young Vinnies group held a morning tea for Age Concern. This was the very first event our group had organised as we have now established our very own group in CCC. Young Vinnies members show great interest in helping the vulnerable members of our community, and our main focus for this term is the elderly. It is nice to see many students attend our weekly meetings, reaching a roll of more than 30 students! We would like to thank all the students who put their hand up to help, assist and sacrifice their time for this successful event. We would also like to thank Mr. Houghton for being an excellent teacher in charge as well as a massive thank you to Nina and Trish. We would like to invite all students to come to our weekly Friday meetings where we put our faith into action.
