The University of Tennessee is an EEO/AA/Title VI/Title IX/Section 504/ADA/ADEA institution in the provision of its education and employment programs and services.
Welcome to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology newsletter. This is
the first of a periodic publication that will inform physicians in
the Memphis area and UT alumni about what is happening at
UTHSC.
We seek to advance women’s health through leadership in obstetrics and gynecology education, compassionate patient care,
cutting-edge research, collaboration, and community service.
In both research and the clinical arena, our department and
our faculty have a rich history of achieving milestones. We are
always looking to the future.
Patients benefit not only from the expertise of our doctors, but
also from the synergy that arises when clinical experts combine their skills with those of research scientists in Ob/Gyn
and other specialties so that patients receive the most current
care options available. Our department has developed a teamwork approach with top-notch scientists of other departments
on our campus.
We provide an outstanding, highly competitive residency program, and our clerkship program for medical students is among
the best at UTHSC. We offer a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal
Medicine (the only one available in Tennessee) and Minimally
Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery, both of which combine excellent clinical training with outstanding research opportunities.
Community service is also at the core of our mission.
Thanks to these strengths, our department is quickly becoming one of the top places to train and to receive care.

Single-Port Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery
Spontaneous Pre-Term
Delivery Protocols
Single-Port Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery (SPMIGS) could be the least invasive gynecology
gurgery. There is a growing body of evidence that supports safety, a better cost-benefit ratio, a superior cosmetic outcome, and less post-operative pain for the single-port procedure compared to its
traditional counterpart.
We recognize two groups of women
with different risk for spontaneous
pre-term delivery (SPTD):
•
High risk group: history of
second trimester (2T) loss or SPTD;
and
•
Low risk group: nulliparous
or multiparous with no prior SPTD.
The Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery in the Department of Ob/Gyn,
at UTHSC is one of few medical centers in
the nation that provides complicated gynecological surgeries (such as hysterectomy,
oophorectomy, myomectomy) via SPMIGS for
selected patients. The division is also one of
a few of the American Association of Gynecology Laparoscopy fellowship training sites
for Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery.
The protocols outlined here are followed at UTHSC.
Dr. Ahmad Azari, Assistant professor and
director of the Comprehensive Gynecology
Center, Department of Ob/Gyn, University of
Tennessee, Memphis is a pioneer in the field
of SPMIGS.
