Chinchilla cloth is one of the most
expensive fabrics. Explain what makes this
fabric so special.
1. Silk-breeding term meaning double cocoon, where
two silk worms spin the cocoon in an interlocking
manner. It is used to describe the irregular, raw rough
silk reeled from the double cocoons.
2. It’s made in a plain weave, with natural silk or rayon
in the warp and doupion in the weft, which heightens
the effect of the fabric.
3. Used for blouses, shirts, ladies' dresses including
bridal and ladies' suits.
4. It is sometimes called Doupion or Doupioni all
describe the same fabric.
1. Woven structure where the maximum amount of warp
shows on the face. This is called satin weave. The smooth
effect is enhanced by using filament yarns and/or lustrous
fibres.
2. Silk satin is made from finest mulberry silk. Silk is a
smooth fibre which adds to the effect.
3. Satin drapes beautifully and has a high sheen to it. It’s
difficult to work with and is used for dresses, underwear,
blouses and other luxury items. It is cool to wear but has to
be hand washed as the fibre get brittle when heat is applied.
4. Polyester satin imitates silk and looks similar, however it
builds up static, can’t breathe and is even more difficult to
work with as it is not a natural fibre.
1. It was originally a thick and warm homespun or tweed
woven by Irish peasants in Donegal, Ireland.
2. Donegal now describes the wool tweed that has colourful
thick slubs woven into the fabric.
1. It is a thick, dense and heavy pile fabric. Its surface has curls or
nubs. It is very soft and warm despite being one of the lightest in
weight furs. Often it is double faced with a knitted or woven back.
The fur is most fragile and most expensive.
Chinchilla cloth is usually made from wool or blends of wool and
cotton in twill weave.
3. The term 'Chinchilla' is also used to refer a knitted woolen fabric
which has a napped surface. Chinchilla cloths are very difficult the
manufacture but new dressing methods have made it easier to
work.
4. It is primarily used for coats.
1. Broadcloth is a very closely woven plain weave fabric with a crosswise
rib. It is made of cotton, cotton/polyester blends and silk. It is soft and

lustrous with a firm finish. It is similar to poplin, but finer. It wears better,
drapes well and is dressy. The fabric is cool, comfortable, functional and
affordable.
2.
Broadcloth originally indicates a cloth woven on a wide loom.
The weft yarn in the fabric is heavier with lesser twist than the warp yarn. It
can be bleached, dyed, or printed. It is also very often
mercerized. It is woven in a plain weave
3. Broadcloth is used as shirts, dresses, blouses and summer wear of all
kinds.
