If you look at the map of Russia you will see that outline of the Tyumen Region resembles a human heart. This land has unique natural resources potential and can be called “energy heart” of the country. The Siberian land is an heir of the ancient civilizations. The first settlements appeared here at the time of mammoths. The Tyumen Portage is an old trade route from Asia to Europe. We do not need to invent legends about Siberia; you can come across them at every step. Tobolsk – the first capital of the Siberian governorate – is one of the Russian miracles. 150 nationalities live in the Tyumen Region. This area became home not only for the first free settlers from the Central Russia, here the peasants running “behind the ridge” and Old Believers found their shelter, the exiled were transported to Siberia. The Uglich watch bell became the first “politically exiled” sent to Tobolsk. After mysterious death of the last heir of the House of Rurik – Tsarevich Dmitriy – in Uglich, the bell summoned the citizens on the square and many were exiled or executed. The bell itself was publicly flogged, its tongue and cannon were cut, then in 1593 it was exiled to Tobolsk where it was recorded as the “first inanimate exiled from Uglich”. The bell was brought back from exile only 299 years later. 6 7 10 reasons to visit Tyumen Region! 1. Bathe in the healing waters of the Tyumen thermal springs. Indeed Tyumen is the mother of the Siberian cities. All the citizens of Tyumen have their perception of the native city but the history of the city unites them. Moreover, if the history lives in the heart of the contemporary people then bonds of ages and generations persist. In summer of 1586, they commenced construction of the Tyumen’s burg at the site of the ancient Tatarian capital of Chingi-Tura. The historian of 18th century H. Miller wrote: “None of the Siberian territories seems to have such natural advantages … both the Tatars and the Russians did it right when they built their first cities here.” Wall of the first round-log city had eight towers. They were 13-meter tall. Trading quarter was surrounded by wall as well. It was how the first city was founded behind the Ural Mountains. Due to its favorable location Tyumen became the outpost for exploration of Siberia, its gate, and intersection of trade routes between Asia and Europe. From here water way to Siberia started and land path ran. This ensured value of the city as an important transport hub and center of trade. By efforts of the local merchants, they built railway passing through Tyumen at the end of 1885, which allowed for substantial growth of trade turnover and new motivation for industrial development. From historical point of view, Tyumen is a merchant and trading city. At the fair they sold the Ural iron and Siberian wheat, Bokhara carpets and Mangazeisk sables. Contacts with the East were developing so successfully that Bokhara quarters appeared in Tyumen and Tobolsk. Until 1918 Tyumen was a part of the Tobolsk governorate established on December 12th 1796. On April 3rd 1918 governorate center was relocated from Tobolsk to Tyumen. The Tyumen governorate existed until 1923. From 1935 to 1944 Tyumen was a regional center of Omsk region. August 14th 1944 is recognized as the date when the Tyumen region was founded. Tyumen was founded in 1586. Annually the regional center celebrates the city day on the last Saturday of July. Historical environment of the 19th century city quarters with typical class characteristics of mansions of peasants, coachmen, bourgeois, merchants and clergy, which are accumulated in the area of Zareka, Zatyumenka, and in the historical center of Tyumen represents the main touristic attraction. Despite the actively constructed new buildings, Tyumen maintains its distinctive image of a provincial city of the 18th-19th centuries, and exterior design of residential houses made in wood carving technique is included into the heritage of world art. Population of Tyumen is 697 037 (2015). From the middle of the 20th century, they started development of rich deposits of oil and gas in the Tyumen Region. From this period all the world knows the name of “Tyumen”. The modern city of Tyumen represents a big industrial center, city of science, culture and sports; it is a hardworking city. From 2004, Tyumen has been getting places in allRussian competition “The most comfortable city of Russia” among the cities of the 1st category. In 2007 by results of the annual all-Russian competition “The best municipal entity” held by the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation, the Tyumen urban district took the second place in category “Economy and finances of municipal entity”. In 2010 by results of the 5th annual competition among municipal entities held by the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation, the Tyumen urban district received diploma for the 3rd place in category “The best local authorities” among the urban districts – administrative centers. The modern Coat of Arms of Tyumen displays a golden ship (flat-bottomed boat) sailing to the left with mast without cloth, with wheel, weathervanes and two flags: one flag is on the mast, another is on the ship’s head drawn on azure field with wave-like stripe. Shield is topped with the golden tower-like crown, which is supplemented with gold laurel at the bottom. Black beaver and fox standing on a golden trophy hold the shield. The trophy consists of halberds, banners, drums with round shield in the center. The motto says “From this city begins” and is written with silver on azure ribbon. Slovtsov lived for major part of his life in Tobolsk, here he wrote his works, including “Historical Overview of Siberia”. In minds of people from the European part of Russia, history of Siberia was closely associated with exile and penal colony. When death penalty was abolished in 1753, all criminals were sentenced to penal servitude and lifetime settling in Siberia. The main roads had the organized standing posts and stations for the exiled, and in 1823 M.M. Speransky established Department for the exile affairs in Tobolsk. Protopope Avvakum, Abram Petrov (Gannibal) and A.D. Menshikov were among the first famous people exiled to Tobolsk governorate. Later 36 convicted Decembrists were living here: I.A. Annenkov, A.P. Baryatinsky, M.A. Fonvizin, M.I. Muraviev-Apostol, I.I. Puschin, I.D. Yakushkin, etc. A.N. Radischev, F.M. Dostoevsky, M.V. It is the sole stone Kremlin in Siberia. On June 28th 1961, the Tobolsk Kremlin was declared the historical and architectural conservation area. St. SophiaAssumption Cathedral is the earliest extant building. St. Sophia-Assumption Cathedral The first Tobolsk burg was built of disassembled Cossacks’ flat rowboats. The masters from Veliky Ustyug constructed the stone cathedral. The cathedral walls were painted with frescos. Frescos were painted by the famous artist of the Peter the Great times Roman Nikitin. 28 ROUTE 2 For a long time the cathedral was used as a burial vault of the Tobolsk archbishops. Tombs were located under the floor of the cathedral and north aisle. From 1925 holdings of museum preserve were kept in the rooms of the cathedral. During restoration works they found remains of frescos dated the 17th century at the lower part of the southern wall, which were recovered by the effort of Moscow restorers. In autumn 2011, the cathedral was consecrated again. Guest House (Gostiny Dvor) was built in 1703-1706 by design of S.U. Remezov. The building is low, and for symmetry Remezov made round towers at the corners, their crenellation resembles that of the Kremlin walls. There were two gates leading to the Guest House. In 1743, they laid the foundation stone for the winter Cathedral of the Intercession. It had been constructed for three years and was consecrated in the name of Anthony and Theodosius – wonderworkers of Pechora. In 1860, the building was extended and in 1867 they constructed an aisle from the north with the money of merchant Nevolin. The Cathedral was renamed to Cathedral of the Intercession. The Cathedral distinguishes itself among the monuments of Tobolsk as being the only one with the decoration intact. Construction of this church started the gradual destruction of the Kremlin walls. From this time the Kremlin was losing its defensing function and transformed into public city center. 29 Bishop’s House Two-storied palace was constructed in 1674 and rebuilt in 1691, it burnt and broke down in 1723 because of explosion of the gunpowder stored in its basement. In 1773 in the Sofia’s yard they laid foundation of a new 3-storied bishop’s palace which was completed in 1775 and survived in a good condition to the present days. The Uglich Bell transferred from the Cathedral Bell Tower was located here. Consistory Cathedral Bell Tower The Cathedral Bell Tower rises to a height of 75 meters and dominates the Troitsky Cape. Stone column of the Bell Tower is topped with octagonal dome with a decorative turret on it. In the past 15 bells were suspended on two layers of the Bell Tower. The first layer accommodated the biggest bell manufactured in 1738 at the Tagil’s plant, which weighted about 16561kg. It was named the Siberian Tsar Bell for its rich voice. Other bells were made by the Moscow master Fedor Motorin in the 17th century and weighted 4914 or 8190 kg. Additionally there were 4 given bells sent to Tobolsk by the Russian tsars: Aleksey Mikhailovich, Fedor Ioannovich, Ivan Alekseevich and Peter I. For some time the Uglich Bell was hung on the Cathedral Bell Tower. During the Soviet time the bells were lost. From the 1990s they started restoration. First the minor bells were hung. In 2007 they delivered the new Tsar Bell weighting about 27 tons, which was manufactured at the Voronezh bellcasting plant to Tobolsk. Semantron inside the bell weights 770 kg. Diameter of its base is 3.2 meters. It is the biggest bell behind the Ural Mountains. ROUTE 2 ROUTE 2 TOBOLSK The Consistory managed all the affairs of diocesan administration, missionary activities of the church in Siberian, and the investigation of cases against heretics and the old believers. Decoration displays the remains of baroque style as easily can be seen in onion-shaped architraves and rustic pilaster-strips. There is exit to balcony form the chamber. The abutting ends of the building are decorated with rustic piers. Rectangular pedestals standing on the gables had Chinese style decorative vases in the past. 30 31 Sofia’s Uphill Road Sofia’s (Pryamskoy) Uphill Road divides the Troitsky Cape in two parts. It was designed for climbing the hill. In 1671 the first wooden stairs appeared, and in 1750 the famous Siberian military engineer Yakov Ukusnikov designed the wooden Sofia’s Uphill Road. The 400-meter road had been constructed for several years, and today it includes 198 steps. In 30 years they fortified the slopes of its upper part, paved it with pebble and built the walls in brick. Each wall rose to a height of 110 meters. Chamber of Writs and Palace of Vicar Construction of the Chamber of Writs was completed in 1704, and in 80 years the chamber was taken to pieces and they built the Palace of Vicar on its foundation. The Palace was damaged in 1788 because of fire and it was in ruins for 50 years. They restored it only in 1831 but it was modified under the design of architect David Visconti from St. Petersburg. By that time the position of vicar was abolished, Tobolsk became a principal town of the province, and the building was used for province public authorities. In different time from 1830 to 1856 the Decembrists A.M. Muraviev-Apostol, clerk, I.A. Annenkov, officer on public assistance and office of exile affairs, P.N. Svistunov, correspondence clerk of provincial statistics committee, S.M. Semenov, counsellor of provincial government worked in the provincial government. ROUTE 2 ROUTE 2 TOBOLSK Treasury Chamber (Rentereya) The building of Treasury Chamber was built over the Uphill Road. It received the name Rentereya because of the name of tax – rent which was collected from the peasants at that time. Here in the dungeons they kept another precious Siberian tax which was collected from the locals – furs. Remezov called the building the Dmitry Gates (on St. Dmitry Solunsky day Ermak entered the Siberian capital). The captured Swedes participated in construction of the vault of the public treasury and because of that the building received another name – the Swedish Chamber. 32 Now the main exhibition of Tobolsk State Historical and Architectural Museum Preserve is located in the Palace of Vicar. 33 34 Prison Castle The project for construction of the Prison Castle was approved in March 1838 in St. Petersburg. The construction was almost completed by 1849, but opening of the jail complex was delayed because of construction of the chapel. The Prison Castle and the prison chapel were consecrated in the name of Alexander Nevsky on November 25th 1855.The prison was designed for 750 people but usually they kept minimum 1500 prisoners here. Complex of the Prison Castle consists of five buildings. The guardhouse was located in the center, later they arranged the prison hospital here. Building 3 was located to the right of the guardhouse; initially it was built for the prisoners who were sent further to the east. Building 1 with chapel of Alexander Nevsky was used for holding the dangerous repeated criminals. Building 2 accommodated the political prisoners before the revolution, here the prison for women was also located. Among the most famous prisoners of the Tobolsk Prison Castle you can find M.I. Mikhailov, V.G. Korolenko, N.G. Chernyshevsky, Fanny Kaplan. When the fascist army approached Moscow in 1941, prisoners from the Butyrka and Lipetsk prisons were evacuated here. They excavated underground tunnels in 1970 in the territory of the Prison Castle, from that time the prisoners went to work and from one building to another building only using these tunnels. As of 1972 there were 1300 prisoners in the Prison Castle. In 1989 taking into account interests of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR and of the citizens, they resolved to transfer the Tobolsk prison to Harp, Nether-Polar Urals. In 1659 the Tyumen voivode Fedor Vereschagin asked the permission of the tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich to establish a quarter in the place of the Tatarian town Yavlu-Tura, because “the land is good in direction of Tyumen and hay meadows spread for 30 versts”. In 1661 the tsar issued a decree signed by the secretary Semen Rumyantsev about establishment of this quarter. Thus Yalutorovsk appeared. Peasants Ulyanov and Gilev were the first organizers. In 50 years the Yalutorovsk Burg included 32 villages. Yalutorovsk received the status of district town in 1782 by the decree of Ekaterina II. Yalutorovsk is located in the south of the West Siberia, 75 km away from Tyumen, at the confluence of the rivers Tobol and Iset. Yalutorovsk was established as a burg in 1659 in the place of the Tatarian town Yavlu-Tura, and received the status of district town of the Tobolsk vicariate in 1782 by the Decree of Ekaterina II. The historical past of the town reflects the most significant stages of the Russian history. In the 19th century, the town became the exile place of the Decembrists, members of the revolutionary organization “People’s Will”, and participants of the Polish national-liberation movement. Yalutorovsk is the native town of the famous philanthropist S.I. Mamontov, poet Yulia Drunina went to the front line from this place. Yalutorovsk is located in a favorable geographical location and has convenient transport junctions at the intersection of two federal and regional highways, trans-Siberian railway passes through the town. Yalutorovsk is a center for processing of the agricultural products delivered from the south of the region. Silver mill wheel with blades is located on the azure field at the Yalutorovsk Coat of Arms. The Coat of Arms shows the historical local symbols – Coat of Arms of the district town approved by the Decree of her Imperial Majesty Ekaterina II in 1782. Onofriev founded and built the Korkino village on the left bank of the river Ishim. In 1721 Peter I implemented the new administrative division in the country. The Korkino village became the center of the Ishim district. Population of the Korkino village grew twofold by the middle of the 18th century when the exiled serfs arrived here and in 1782 by the Decree of Ekaterina II the village received the status of a town and the current name. The town was called by the name of the river, on which it is located. The Decembrists A.I. Odoevsky, V.I. Shteingel, and write G.A. Machet lived in exile here. Ishim is located 319 km to the south north of Tyumen. Educator and historian of Siberia P.A. Slovtsov, director of the specialized schools of Tobolsk governorate D.I. Mendeleev, the German scientist A. Humboldt, the American journalist and author of the book “Siberia and the Exile System” G. Kennan and writer A.P. Chekhov visited Ishim in the 19th century. In 1913 they built the railway branch Tyumen-Omsk through Ishim. The seven-time Olympic champion in gymnastics Boris Shakhlin and the designer of Ostankino Television Tower Nikolay Nikitin were born in Ishim. 44 At the low part of the Ishim Coat of Arms you can see the golden crucian carp on a blue field. This story is narrated in the novel of the French writer M.S. Cottin “Elizabeth, or the Exiles of Siberia”, and short novel by the French writer X. de Maistre “The Young Siberian”. 45 SIGHTSEEING TOURS OF ishim Nikolsky Fair From 1721 they regularly held the winter Nikolsky Fair in the Korkino village, which was one of the biggest in the West Siberia. The fair was dedicated to the winter and summer Nikolaos the Wonderworker day (one of the people’s most beloved saint, protector of merchants and sailors) and to the Assumption in August. The winter Nikolsky Fair was the most important; it can be compared to the famous Irbit Fair. From the end of the 18th century the Fair was visited by other people not only the merchants and peasants from the areas near Ishim, they brought goods from all Siberia and the Urals, from the Central Russia, and one fourth of the goods were from other countries – Europe and China. The townsfolk leased their apartments to the merchants in advance and secured the income for a year to come, for that period the population grew by six times. The winter Nikolsky Fair lasted for 25 days. Cultural Center of P.P. Ershov Museum of Ershov (from 2009 Cultural Center of P.P. PLACES TO VISIT Gregory Rasputin: Life of the Siberian Elder ROUTE 5 ROUTE 5 POKROVSKOE Museum of Gregory Rasputin in Pokrovskoe The Museum resembles a common village house. Unfortunately, it is not the house in which Rasputin lived. The Elder’s house standing on the other side was demolished during the Soviet time. At the beginning the Museum was located in the house of the marine pilot Zubov. It is known, that Rasputin stayed in the house and visited Zubov. But in 2009 the Museum moved to a new building. A memorial stone commemorating the royal family, which stayed here just a few months before the execution, is installed near the gate of the House Museum. There is an inscription on the stone: “They re-teamed the horses in the village of Pokrovskoe and we stayed long just opposite the house of Gregory (Rasputin)…” April 14th 1918. From diary of the Emperor Nikolay II. This stone is the starting point of every excursion in the Museum. At the courtyard of the Museum you can see the old carved architraves. It is all what remained of the original house of Gregory Rasputin. Collection of the Museum contains items, which were used by Rasputin: trumeau with the cracked mirror, ancient ironbound coffer, spoon and saucer with personal monogram of Alexandra Fedorovna Romanova, icon of Simeon of Verkhoturye in front of which Gregory prayed. They believe that all objects related to Rasputin are magical. The ancient Viennese chair of Rasputin is the most famous exhibit of the Museum. According to the wide spread legend it possesses the healing properties – it cures the man’s diseases and gives the virile strength. 49 Telegraph office is the only building, which remembers Rasputin, now it accommodates the post office. He studied in the Kiev Ecclesiastical Academy and accepted monasticism in Kiev Pechersk Lavra. On June 18th 1700 Peter I signed decree on baptizing “the Siberian national minorities”, and appointed Filofei as the Siberian Metropolitan, “a shepherd not only kind and of virtuous innocent life, but a scholar” to execute the mission. In 1702, the new Metropolitan arrived in Tobolsk and started the vigorous activity. He opened the Slavonic school for clergy, and sent missions to Mongolia, Kamchatka and down the river Ob to Berezov and Surgut Ostyak. Because of poor health he left the metropolitan throne and retired to the Tyumen Holy Trinity Cathedral. But in 1710 by personal order of the tsar he went back to his activity on baptizing the land. Later the Siberia and Tobolsk Metropolitan Filofei went to the completely unexplored lands on the river Konda. The Metropolitan visited Berezov, Obdorsk, Turikhansk, Krasnoyarsk, Selenginsk and Irkutsk. He made the last journey at the age of 76. He died in his cell in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tyumen. According to the message delivered to the Holy Synod during his service is Siberia, the Metropolitan baptized about 40 thousand people. 52 According to his will, Filofei was buried at the doorsteps of the cathedral, “so that every passing person would thread under foot his ash”. In 1923 the tomb was broken and the Holy Trinity Cathedral was closed down. Coffin with remains of fabric but without bones and skull of the Metropolitan was sent to the museum vault. Later it was burned in the museum furnace. In August 2006 when they restored the Saint George Ascension Church a coffin and relics of Filofei were found, they were hidden in the burial vault under the left column. This hidden place was indicated in the will of protopope Alexander Sychugov, ex-rural dean of the Tyumen churches. His daughter handed over the will. On October 21st 2006 the relics were transferred to the Holy Trinity Cathedral which was founded due to Filofei Leshchinsky. 53 Route “Churches of Tyumen” Churches of Tyumen witnessed the spiritual life of the city. In 1932 the authorities decided to close the church and destroy the vault. Coffin with the body was moved to a cemetery, but to which one no one knows. The tomb of N.M. Chukmaldin has not been found to this day and is obviously lost. Today the church is restored except for the north façade. It is located in the village of Abalak on the right bank of the river Irtysh, 20 km away from Tobolsk. The Abalak Holy Sign Friary is a pilgrimage destination of the wonderworking icon of the Holy Mother. The friary started with archbishop of Tobolsk and Siberia Simeon. In 1653 he decided to found a friary and started construction of the wooden church of the Saint John the Forerunner. In 1783 with a petition of the Tobolsk and Siberia bishop Varlaam the third-class friary was founded. In the 19th century it was re-built several times. At the beginning of the 20th century 57 monks were sent to Abalak of the Valaam monastery, the rules of the Sarov Monastery were approved, school of crafts for children of the Khanty, Selkups, Nenets and Siberian Tatars and community hospitals were opened. In the 17-18th centuries a complex of stone churches appeared here such as the Holy Sign Cathedral (1683-1691), Church of the Saint Nicholas, the Wonderworker (1748-1750), and church of the Saint Mary of Egypt (1752-1759). During all years of its existence the friary carried out the missionary work. During the Soviet time, they were confiscating the church property all over the country. By the decree dated 23.04.1923 they made a search in the rooms of friary and confiscated valuables. In 1933 the building of the friary was given to the orphanage and from 1977 a military unit was located there, which moved out in 1998. The same year friary was given to Tobolsk and Tyumen eparchy and re-opened on January 26th. From summer 2003 and up to the present time they hold sacred services in the friary. Number of monks is about 50. The Sunday school and hotel for pilgrims work. The friary accepts the pilgrims willing to work for restoration of the friary and particular pilgrim groups. Traditionally on Sunday and holidays the friary holds a common feast for everyone who is present at the service. ROUTE 6 ROUTE 6 TOURS TO HOLY PLACES Abalak Icon Abalak icon of the Holy Mother “The Sign” is a wonderworking and the most venerated icon of the Holy Mother in Siberia. It was painted in 1637 at the time of the Tobolsk archbishop Nektary by the protodeacon of cathedral Matfy. It is written in the special Legend about the icon that in 1636 a widow Mary saw the icon of the Holy Mother of Oranta type (The Sign) in her dream, on the sides of the icon were the figures of St. Nicholas the Miracle-worker and St. Mary of Egypt. The Holy Mother ordered to build a church in Abalak devoted to this icon with side chapels of the seen saints. When Mary hesitated to tell people about this apparition, there were more fearful visions compelling her to do what was demanded. When the archbishop heard about it, he ordered to commence the construction of the church. Location of the original icon is unknown. It was taken away from Russia during the Civil war. There are copies of the icon. The icon of the Holy Mother in the Abalak monastery is miracle-working, due to this soul and physical sufferings cure. 63 The metropolitan throne of the Tobolsk and Tyumen metropolitan county, seminary and icon-painting school are located in Tobolsk. And in 1636 a resident of the village of Abalak Mary had a miraculous apparition. Four times St. Nicholas the Wonderworker repeated her the demand of the Holy Mother to build a wooden chapel at the Abalak burial place. The archbishop Nektary blessed the construction of the church and it was built the same year. In 1637 the protodeacon of the Tobolsk cathedral Matfy painted the icon of the Holy Mother “The Sign”. When a paralyzed peasant Evfimy recovered from his illness it became the first miracle of the Holy Mother icon. 65 News about the miracleworking icon spread out fast not only in Siberia but also all over Russia. In the 17th century only there were registered 130 cases of miraculous healing. In 1783 at the time of bishop Varlaam (Petrov) by the Decree of her Imperial Majesty Ekaterina II, the Abalak Holy Sign Friary was founded in place of the Abalak parish. Where from and how does the creative spirit originate? Need for creativity is as natural as need to drink and to eat, it lives in every human being. Joy of perception and joy of creation are inherent part of a creative artist. Tyumen is the first city of Siberia. Here in Tyumen you can find the remaining unique monuments of wood architecture. They render the unique appearance to the city present even today. There is an own style and school – traditional Tyumen school of woodcarving. Harsh conditions of exploration of the new lands, which created the “Siberian Spirit” influenced the Siberian culture and architecture. The high cultural level of Siberia is explained by two crucial factors: continuous inflow of the most energetic and often the most sophisticated population and absence of serfdom law. Builders and wood-carvers were the true people’s masters at that time. 98 They accumulated all the people’s experience and being the same social class they could naturally and freely express their perception in the commonly understandable architectural language. Works of the folk art, which survived to this day, shall not be only the objects of aesthetic admiration but of deep scientific researches. Only this approach will let us to restore and maintain the links with our past and better understand ourselves. Ethnographers and historians of the previous centuries wrote about the Tyumen inhabitants: “People of Siberia love good buildings, they would better eat and drink less and build the spacious chambers. They have big mainly two-storied houses which obligatory have plank wood roof, the roof shall have carved decorations, shutters and doors shall be painted”. An English traveler, S. Belle, who visited Tyumen in 1718, wrote: “Tyumen is beautiful and is strongly fortified. The streets are wide and houses are built in a straight line”. The window architraves of the houses richly decorated with carving will tell you a lot, just look at them attentively and you will see the heaven, drops of rain, broken ground and heavy crops. This is the peculiar chronicles of our city written in the carved patterns. That is why the carving art of Tyumen is rightly considered the identity card of the city. ROUTE 11 ROUTE 11 UNESCO International Route Svyatoslav Vadimovich Shitov, Fine art restorer of woodcarving “Center of Revival of Folk Crafts” 99 The first UNESCO International Route ROUTE 11 ROUTE 11 UNESCO International Route in Tyumen region “Chronicles of Siberia in wooden architecture of Tyumen” The international route will tell the city guests about the rich inheritance, which is rightly called the chronicles of Tyumen written in wooden architecture. The walking tour includes the masterpieces of carving which the city managed to keep for the offspring. Picturesque merchant manors of the 19th century, monasteries and churches in the classical style – Tyumen is a huge preserve of the Russian folk architecture. Woodcarving adds to this uniqueness. The art experts classify it as the Tyumen variant of the Siberian baroque. Being vivid, festive, and dimensional the carving became the center of the first international route. Masters who are mainly unknown managed to create harmony of building and decoration in each object. The route consists of 12 objects, among which you can see house of the photographer Rodionov, house-shop of the merchant Andreeva, and manor of the Kolokolnikovs. “Even by one architrave you can judge about the immense potential. A wooden merchant’s house is like a book and each element of the wooden carving is like a page. You approach the house and read in its curls, its patterns and decoration. You read the carving. You start to better understand and see, and feel the mutual link, a dialog. If roots of a tree are strong, it will grow, it will bring joy and fruits, and develop further” – says the tour guide, a hereditary architect and restorer, Svyatoslav Shitov. At the end of the tour, each tourist if he wishes can feel himself a master and a creator, and carve and paint a wooden toy in shape of horse or a figure of the favorite fairy-tale character. The soldiers and officers were chosen from the guards rifle regiments. The Romanovs were accommodated in the house of ex-governor. The regime of staying here was softer than in Tsarskoye Selo. The life was regular, the prisoners were allowed to exit the house and visit the church in the neighborhood. A censor controlled the life of the royal family, all their actions and read the private letters. 110 The 45 servants were exiled to Siberia with the royal family. It was their free-will decision to go there together with the royal family. The commissioner Karelin ordered that the treasury covered only the costs of soldiers’ allowance, heating and lighting of the rooms, other expenditure was paid at the expense of the prisoners, and the application of private assets was limited to 600 rubles per month. Dmitry Ivanovich recollected: “There at the glass factory managed by my mother I had my first impressions of nature, people and industry”. Having noticed the extraordinary talents of the youngest son his mother found strength to leave the native Siberia forever, she went from Tobolsk to give Dmitry an opportunity to have the higher education. When Dmitry finished gymnasium Maria Dmitrievna closed down all the affairs in Siberia and together with Dmitry and the youngest daughter Elizaveta went to Moscow. After he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics faculty of the Main Pedagogical Institute in Saint Petersburg Mendeleev served as a teacher of natural sciences in Simferopol gymnasium for boys, then he taught in gymnasium at the Richelieu Lyceum, Odessa. On March 6th (18th) 1869 the famous report “On the Relationship of the Properties of the Elements to their Atomic Weights” by D.I. Mendeleev was read out at the meeting of the Russian chemical society and published soon afterwards in “Journal of the Russian Chemical Society”. He died on January 20th (February 2nd) 1907 in Saint Petersburg and was buried at the so called “Writer's Walkways” of Volkovskoe Cemetery. Famous meat pockets (pelmeni) are the traditional Siberian dish, which is widespread and dearly loved in all the territory of Russia. Pelmeni shall be made of three types of meat: beef, pork and mutton. Sometimes they add cream to mince. The Siberian old timers drink tea with milk and hunters add fat, salt and flour to it, which helps them to sustain piercing winter wind and frost. There is a tradition to serve slices of frozen fish or meat in winter time. They slice raw frozen meat or fish in thin pieces, add salt and pepper. Meat and fish, which are not thermally treated, preserve their vitamins. Slightly salted and smoked fish, pies with fish, game, mushrooms, berries, soaked red bilberry, jam from blueberry, honeyberry and seabuckthorn are considered specialties.
