Shire Notes WOODANILLING PRIMARY SCHOOL BANNERS IN THE TERRACE COMPETITION Lindy D’Mellow and the Woodanilling Primary schools students have created an outstanding banner to be hung in Perth as part of the Banners in the Terrace competition. This competition is held annually and is keenly contested by many regional towns, there is a waiting list each year to enter a banner and Woodanilling was lucky enough to secure a spot this year. The banners are exhibited along St Georges and Adelaide Terraces in Perth and this competition allows communities and regions throughout Western Australia to represent themselves to thousands of people travelling along these routes each day. It is a much anticipated part of the annual WA Local Government Convention and Trade Exhibition with this year’s theme being LOCAL IMPACT. The display will be exhibited from Sunday 24th July through to Saturday 6th August. When asked what inspired the banner design Lindy said “To be honest I did the design at the last minute, being a new Principal at the school, I was pretty busy. I didn’t therefore have time to get the community involved in the design, which I certainly would next time. When the Shire me and told me that the design was needed, I thought what represents Woodanilling. Firstly I included the school’s logo at the bottom of the banner. I then googled Woodanilling and what appeared first were beautiful pictures of patchwork farms and considering the majority of our students come from farms I knew that this was a good representation of our community. When I first drove into Woody, I was taken by the ‘Men’s Shed’, thinking at first it was a charming old-fashioned shop. When I discovered the story of the refurbishing of the shed and how it had become a meeting place for men in the community to work on community projects”. “I included this in the design as it was my first memory of seeing Woody and it also represented the community spirit that is present. The tree is the beautiful Salmon Gum that sits in amongst the new units in town, which can be seen clearly from the school. It was painted orange as it’s a complimentary colour to the blue sky, but it stands tall above Woody and I wanted it to stand out. The rest of the banner, the canola, wheat and sheep represent the primary produce of the area. The banner design is based on things I first took in when I came to the community”. The following students painted the banner: Mereki Hannan, William Mader, John Murray, Hugh Murray, Anne Patrick, Charlotte Patrick, Joseph Shackley, Serenity Shackley, Jakob Shackley, Harry Wilcox and Faith Miles-Linley. Well done to all of these students for the great efforts they put into getting the banner finished. Local MP Terry Waldron said the local schools were among hundreds across Western Australia receiving funding to purchase new hardware and software. “Access to technology like this is incredibly important in developing students’ digital literacy,” Mr Waldron said. Along with the new devices, which include iPads and desktop computers, funding has allowed for the purchase of accessories such as charging stations, trolleys, power boards and monitors. Nationals WA Candidate for Roe Peter Rundle said school funds were matched dollar for dollar by the State Government up to a total of $20 million. Mr Rundle said the technology would be integrated carefully into learning programs. “IT devices are powerful tools for helping students improve their literacy and numeracy skills, when combined with a balanced education program,” he said. The local schools to receive the equipment are – Borden Primary School Darkan Primary School East Narrogin Primary School Gairdner Primary School Jerramungup DHS Kendenup Primary School Kulin DHS Lake King Primary School Narrogin Primary School Nyabing Primary School Pingelly Primary School Tambellup Primary School Wandering Primary School Williams Primary School Yealering Primary School Bremer Bay Primary School Dumbleyung Primary School Frankland River Primary School Gnowangerup DHS Katanning Primary School Kukerin Primary School Lake Grace DHS Mt Barker Community College Newdegate Primary School Ongerup Primary School Pingrup Primary School Wagin DHS Wickepin Primary School Woodanilling Primary School The recent Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report, Students, Computers and Learning: Making the Connection, makes the case for technology in schools so children can learn the skills they need to succeed in the future. JULY 2016 After a couple of busy months, June brought the cold and wet weather and everything slowed down. We did manage to get three coats of paint onto the new wood storage shed. We didn’t like the first colour we put on – a bit too bright. So Glen sprayed another 2 coats of a much softer colour on. All we need now is some dry weather so we can fill it up. Shane and Glen have started work on making some Planter box’s. These can be made to order for you. What we need to know from you is: How big (long – wide & high) ? Do you want it made from salvaged material or from new steel? Do you want it painted or left natural? (you can paint it) All of these things will depend on the price they will need to charge you. As mentioned last month we have collected about 30kg of screws bolts & nuts etc from items that have been dismantled, and they need to be sorted into they group types and sizes. This is a great job that can be done on a cold winters day sitting around a table with the fire burning in the back ground to keep us warm. Please let us know if you are available to help out. The Woody Men’s Shed is now open every TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY from 9am to about midday New members are welcome to come and join us having fun. Membership is only $40.00 per year to cover our public liability insurance. Membership is from March to February each year. To all our friends and acquaintances… We take this opportunity to thank you for your help, financially and physically, offers of help, general enquiry of our wellbeing and being available whenever we had the need to tell somebody some things. Although we never doubted it, the judge viewed our case favourably. The ink is almost dry and although an appeal was lodged it has recently been dropped. Meanwhile we have relocated us and some of the toys to Wagin. This property is commonly known as “Blakey’s”. It was set up by Ian Blake in 1982 and of course suits us adequately. Leaving the farm was a pre court agreement, not made lightly but time to move on. As soon as we get our sh_t together and the unpacking is complete, we plan to have an open house gathering for all those who wish to attend. For all those who would like to come and see where and how we live we look forward to spending some time with as many people as possible. We will use the Wongi, word of mouth and of course the telephone to let people know when we have got this organised. But of course, if anyone would like to take the chance on catching us at home, please feel encouraged to do so any time. WOODY PLAYGROUP Woody school has been working with Playgroup WA and a playgroup is starting at the school in week 2 of next term, Tuesday 26th July from 9.30-11.30. The Education Department endorses links between schools and playgroups and benefits young children in preparing them for school. The playgroup allows pre school children to familiarise themselves with the school environment, socialise and engage in fun play activities that are pre-literacy and numeracy based; socialise; participate in art and craft, story time, songs and rhymes. Woody is the first playgroup at a school in the great southern and we are very excited to welcome parents and their children into our school for what is first and foremost in a playgroup, play!. If you have any questions regarding Woody Playgroup, please contact the school on 9823 1528. DINOSAUR BONES FOUND AT SCHOOL The Year 1 to 3 students went on an archaeological dig at school and uncovered dinosaur bones as part of their Science program. The dig was cordoned off by tape and the students went in searching for bones. Carefully brushing away sand, like archaeologists do, to reveal bones which are yet to carbon dated. You never know, a new Jurassic discovery could be on the way!! BANNERS IN THE TERRACE The school is busy painting this years entry into the 2016 Banners in the Terrace. We are aiming to finish the banner by the end of week 9, 24th June. Before we send the banner to the Shire to send to the city for display in St Georges and Adelaide Terraces we are hoping to hang the banner for a day in the undercover area of the school to enable the school population and community to come and have a look. More information, closer to the date will be released through the school. The children are doing a great job of the painting and thanks to the Shire for supporting the school in this project. TREES AT FRONT OF SCHOOL Unfortunately the two trees at the front of the school are being removed. After the last storm, where a large branch fell onto the driveway, the Department has deemed the trees unsafe due to earlier pruning that has weakened the branches and made them likely to fall. The close proximity to the buildings has meant they need to be removed. We are sad to see the beautiful trees go and have been advised to replace them with bushes or shrubs. His trailer was tipped up to the maximum, lost the air, he went back to close the tailgate, air came back up, truck started rolling. It was a very exhilarating 40 metre dash to the cab to jam on the brakes. ___________________________________________________________ During seeding one of our local farmers had worked hard all day and halfway into the night, he knocked off and went home. One of his sons got a phone call from his aunt just before midnight because she had become concerned when she realised that the tractor she could hear had actually been stationary for a number of hours and she went up to the paddock to check, only to find no one around. Nephew had to walk her through how to turn off the tractor! ___________________________________________________________ One of our local farmers (and it might be one of the ones in the previous story) went off spreading his fertilizer only to discover, when stopped by a neighbour, that he had fertilised a few kilometres of roadway. ___________________________________________________________ It has come to the attention of a few locals that we may have a hypnotist in our midst. A statement was made in the tavern a couple of weeks ago that a certain gentleman had the ability. So now we are looking for a couple of volunteers and we could have an entertaining evening ahead of us. THANK YOU “Thanks to all the people who have helped me during my illness.
