Autotrophs -Organisms that make their own food- usually from the sun, like plant. -Chemoautotrophs use inorganic substances like hydrogen sulfide as a source of energy Heterotrophs -Need to ingest food to obtain energy -Eat autotrophs or other heterotrophs, stores energy as ATP FLOW OF ENERGY • Energy continually flows between catabolic and anabolic pathways. • Catabolic Pathway: release energy by breaking down larger molecules into smaller ones • Anabolic pathways: use energy released to build larger molecules from smaller ones • Photosynthesis is an ANABOLIC pathway in which light energy from the sun is converted to chemical energy (sugar) for use by the cell. • Cellular Respiration is the CATABOLIC pathway in which organic molecules (sugar) are broken down to release energy for use by the cell CELLULAR ENERGY!! ATP • ATP = Adenosine Triphosphate • ATP is the most important energy molecule in the cell • A molecule of ATP has 3 parts: 1. Adenosine – nitrogenous base 2. Ribose – sugar 3. Triphosphate – 3 phosphate groups bonded together by “high energy” bonds ENERGY BONDS • • • • Whenever chemical bonds are broken energy is released Whenever chemical bonds are created energy is needed ATP is like a battery, it can be recharged! ATP loses a phosphate group 1. Releases energy!!! 2. Creates ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) • ADP adds a phosphate group 1. 2. Requires energy Creates ATP again! Draw What goes here to ENERGY create ATP and from ADP? Molecule Phosphate Is a bond created or Bond broken? Draw Formed Molecule Is a bond Bond created or Broken broken? What two things ENERGY are released to create ADP? And Draw the Phosphate component. released NOW? - Finish your Reading Guide - Vocabulary - Begin your Study Guide - Turn in interims THINK TIME AND ATP DEMO Humans obtain energy from the food they eat, mainly from carbohydrates, lipids, and sometimes proteins. However, this food must be converted into cellular energy for the body to use. A) What is the main cellular energy molecule? B) List the sequence of events from food to cell: -Bloodstream, pasta, mouth, intestine, cell, stomach
