Neighbor Ride will decrease
isolation and improve the quality of
life for Howard County’s older
residents by providing a
reasonably priced, reliable,
supplemental transportation
service which utilizes community
volunteers and resources.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
We’ve had another wonderful year at Neighbor Ride! Thanks to
the generous gifts of time, energy, and resources provided by the
best group of volunteers a non-profit could ask for, we’re continuing to grow in our ability to serve Howard County’s seniors.
In the last year, we provided 11,402 trips for seniors in the community representing a 44.3 percent growth over the prior year. In
total, Neighbor Ride has provided over 40,700 trips for passengers
since beginning operation in November 2004. Two hundred fiftynine new passengers registered in FY11 and an additional 106
volunteers were recruited.
I’m pleased to report that we were chosen as the Best of Howard
Charity/Non-Profit by the readers of Howard Magazine for the
third year in a row. Knowing the variety of wonderful and worthy
non-profit organizations here in our county makes that award even
sweeter. Our volunteers were further honored as the 2011 Audrey
Robbins Humanitarian Award - Volunteer Team of the Year.
This recognition was a wonderful and well-deserved acknowledgement of the hard work and commitment of our staff and
volunteers.
Neighbor Ride was the beneficiary of a Leadership Howard County - Leadership Essentials Class of 2011 community service project, which helped us identify strategies for recruiting more drivers; and we’ve just launched a partnership with Rotary International to help us promote volunteering for Neighbor Ride as one
of the easiest ways that area Rotarians can put “Service Above
Self.” We’ve also continued our business partnership with 1st
Mariner Bank, which has enabled us to replenish our signature car
door magnets. And, did you notice that this year’s Columbia Festival of the Arts brochure again suggested Neighbor Ride as an
option for getting to their events?
Looking forward, our attention will continue to be on keeping up
with demand for our services. We are very fortunate to live in a
county that has so much to offer, and we want to be sure that our
seniors have access to every option. We’re especially grateful to
Ascend One for their support in helping active seniors continue to
volunteer in the county, and to our many volunteers who help
make sure seniors are able to stay connected and involved.
As we have from the start, Neighbor Ride is committed to a future
of improving the quality of life for Howard County’s older residents by enabling them to remain mobile, active and independent.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, the incredible staff, our wonderful volunteer Drivers and Ride Coordinators, and everyone
associated with Neighbor Ride, I am proud to present you with
this Annual Report.
