1. Look at the first 2 lines of the poem. What effect do the stressed and unstressed syllables have on the poem?
2. What is so tragic about the events in the poem?
3. What is Tennyson's tone in the poem?

Group Activity ­ Count off by groups of 6. Each group will create a poster to present on the topic listed below. You will have 10 min to complete this.
1 ­ Plot ­ create a plot diagram of the poem
2 ­ Figurative language ­ list examples of figurative language in the poem and write their effect on the poem and reader
3 ­ Poetic musical devices ­ list examples of poetic musical devices and tell their effect on the reader
4­ Syntax ­ pay close attention to the syntax. What do you notice? How do changes in syntax affect the poem? Give examples with explanations.
5 ­ Theme ­ create a theme statement for the poem. Use text evidence to support your theme. Then, compare the theme of this poem to a theme in the "The Highwayman." Are there similarities or differences?
