Converting Your Files from WordPerfect to Word 2013
Option 1 – Opening WordPerfect document within Word 2013
Most (WordPerfect files .wpd) will automatically convert to Word 2013 simply by opening Word 2013 and then opening
the file within Word 2013:
1. Open Word 2013
2. From the menu select FILE – OPEN
3. Select COMPUTER
4. Locate your WordPerfect File (you may need to change the file type to ALL
FILES from the file type drop down list)
Once you have located your file select OPEN.
Check your document and when you are satisfied with your file you need to save the file as a Word 2013 file (.docx)
5. Select FILE – SAVE AS
6. Choose the location where the file is to be saved from the list or select BROWSE
7. Select the proposed filename and location
or
select a new file name and location and click the
SAVE button.
Note: Files with graphics, tables and math/science equations may not convert as easily. If your file did
not convert to Word 2013 because of graphics, tables, math/science equations, etc., proceed to Option
3 to convert your WordPerfect file.
Option 2 – Changing the File Association to Automatically Open all WordPerfect Files
in Word 2013
You can set the computer to open ALL WordPerfect files using Word 2013 by:
Select the location of your WordPerfect data
1. Select one of your WordPerfect Files but RIGHT CLICK on the filename
2. Select OPEN WITH
3. Select Word 2013 (may
show as Word desktop)
All WordPerfect files
“should” open automatically
in Word 2013.
Note: If you need to open
the file again in
WordPerfect, you will need
to open the WordPerfect
application first, then open
the file.
Option 3 – Using LibreOffice Writer as a bridge to Converting WordPerfect Files to
Word 2013
Files with graphics, tables, math/science equations or objects from “other” sources may be a bit more difficult to
convert to Word 2013. Try using a “bridge” application such as LibreOffice Writer. LibreOffice Writer may be installed
on academic computers and located in the GENERAL folder on the desktop. If LibreOffice is not installed on your
system, it is a free download and can be found at: http://www.libreoffice.org/
1. Open LibreOffice Writer
2. Open the WordPerfect file within LibreOffice Writer - FILE – OPEN (file type should default to All Files)
3. Select the WordPerfect file to open and click OPEN
4. Check your document and when you are satisfied with your file you need to save the file as a Word 2013 file (.doc)
5. Select FILE – SAVE AS
6. Choose the location where the file
is to be saved from the list or
select BROWSE
7. Change the Save as Type: to
Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP
(.doc) (*.doc) format
8. Select the proposed filename and
location
or select a new file
name and location and click the
SAVE button.
Option 4 – Open WordPerfect Files and Save As Word 2013
1. Open WordPerfect
2. Open the WordPerfect file
3. Select FILE – SAVE AS
4.
Change the File Type from the drop-down to Microsoft Word
97/2000/2002/2003 for Windows
5. Click SAVE
