Enfield Public Schools Grade 2 Unit 1 Snapshot Addition and Subtraction Strategies to 20 Understanding the various strategies that support fact fluency is the major focus of Unit 1. For about 2 weeks, students will work on: developing fluency* with addition and subtraction facts to 20. analyzing and applying various strategies and properties of numbers used in solving addition and subtraction facts. solving problems with 2 or more addends. explaining strategies used in problem solving. *Strategies for developing understandings about number that support automaticity with facts are introduced at the beginning of the year. The expectation is that students will be fluent with all of their addition and subtraction facts, within 20, by spring of Grade 2. > 8 + 6 = ___ 2 + 4 I know that 6 is the same as 2 + 4. I used the 2 with the 8 to make a ten. 4 more than 10 is fourteen. 8 + 6 = 14 Vocabulary students will focus on in Unit 1: add, subtract, sum, difference, equals, doubles, strategy Websites that Support Fact Fluency Development: Mathwire.com and Factmonster.com CtCore Standards we are working on in Unit 1: 2.OA.1, 2.OA.2, 2.NBT.9. Explain your thinking. Sue said she can find the sum using the equation 4 + 5 = ___. Doubles plus 1 Doubles minus 1 Making a ten Who will find the correct sum? How do you know? Sue and Sam had 4 green apples and 5 red apples. Sam says he will use 5 + 4 = ___. Understanding the Relationship between Addition and Subtraction Fact Families Write the related addition and subtraction facts. How can knowing that 5 + 7 = 12 help me solve 12 – 5 = _____? 7 + 4 = 11 __ + __ = __ __ - __ = __ __ - __ = __ Solving Problems with Unknowns in All Positions Use the number line to help you solve. 6 + ____ = 13 NOTE: The development of understandings that lead to fact fluency began with Facts to 5 in K, continued with Facts to 10 in Gr 1 and culminates in Gr 2 with Facts to 20. Students will do some timed practice and assessment of math facts throughout the year. Rote practice only accounts for a small portion of the instruction used to help children become fluent with their addition and subtraction facts to 20.
