Director’s Address
The mission of Boston Area Gleaners is to rescue
surplus farm crops for people in need.
In 2015, staff and volunteers did it again... Yes, we doubled our gleaning totals over the previous year. From
January 1 to December 31, the total poundage gleaned
from 54 generous local farms was 364,282 pounds—or 1.45 million four-ounce
servings—in 10,647 bushels of 66 crop types—almost any produce item you could
find at a local farmers market. This was a phenomenal outcome, and good news for
farmers and recipients alike.
What were the overriding factors that helped us achieve this?
• A larger box truck, with double the payload and three times the volume capacity.
• A second refrigerated storage unit, effectively doubling our inventory capacity.
• A 63% increase in the number of farms gleaned; additionally, we were invited to
work with some of the largest farms in eastern MA due to our growing reputation and the increased payload of our fleet.
• The invitation to participate in Greater Boston Food Bank’s “Value Added
Produce” program, to help fulfill a higher demand for fresh food across their
500-agency network.
• A 39% increase in volunteer participation.
• A 35% increase in the number of recipient agencies.
• An immensely successful apple crop; in one case, an orchard donated all of their
fruit to us.
• A newfound capacity to glean grade B surplus from farms, due to the addition
of recipient agencies that can process large quantities of produce, such as Daily
Table.
• A 100% dedicated gleaning staff. If they were 90% dedicated, we would not
have achieved what we did.
There are a lot of numbers, lists, and names on the following pages. All of them tell
the story of how we continue to expand our work effectively throughout the region.
The most important piece of data, however, is what is more difficult to quantify:
that a person with low income and diabetes can also enjoy the health benefits of
local fresh food, that a kid with a growing brain gets access to greens and fruit, that
the bounty of our local food shed here in eastern MA is shared more equitably with
everyone. Weighed against our mission, THAT is success.
I present the 2015 Annual Report for your assessment and appreciation. On behalf
of our board and staff, we are grateful to everyone who contributed to this amazing
year. It is thanks to you that we remain...
To the Harvest!

Programming
Operations continued to fall under a single program heading in 2015: Gleaning. Activities included farm
field gleaning with volunteers (253,705 lbs.), farm storage gleaning with volunteers (84,952 lbs.), and a
post-harvest farm pick-up service run solely by BAG staff (25,625 lbs.) Our main product focus remained
Grade A surplus. Distribution activity increased in response to our volume intake as well as an increase in
demand from current recipient agencies and new agencies. We added 4 regular recipients, one of which
became one of our largest for the year due to its ability to process Grade B surplus product into prepared
meals and preserved food. The lion’s share of all product went to our distribution partners Greater
Boston Food Bank and Food For Free, who have a combined distributive reach of over 600 agencies (with
some duplication of distribution points between them).

Income and expenses both exceeded budget, with a resulting higher operating surplus than was budgeted. This
surplus allowed new flexibility: we were able to rent major equipment (a large storage cooler) as needed, without
having to acquire prior grant funding. In a business where reaction is everything, this fiscal health enabled us to
serve our mission at a higher rate of productivity. For every dollar that we spent on operations, we were able to
glean and deliver 2.33 lbs. of fresh local produce to people in need.

Volunteers – Gleaning wouldn’t happen without you, thank you!
We had a 35% increase in volunteer participation in 2015. 267 people went gleaning from our list of over
1,200 volunteers; 191 went 1-3 times, 44 went 4-7 times, and 32 went 8 or more times. The total donated
labor time was 3,049 hours on 241 gleaning trips. According to Massachusetts’s volunteer valuation rate
of $27.82 per hour, these volunteers added $84,823 of value to our operations.
