Miss Cottenoir-2nd grade Wow! Time sure flies when you are having fun in 2nd grade! The 2nd graders in Miss Cottenoir’s class are
working so hard in all subject areas to be the best they can be! I want to give a big thank you to all the families that helped our class
have perfect attendance at the music program! You all rock! Now for an overview of what we are working on in our room:
In WRITING they are writing information books all about a topic your student is an expert on. I am enjoying reading their books and
learning from the students each day. In READING the kiddos are also focusing on informational text. They are learning from the text and
graphic features in these pieces to help them find the important ideas. They seem to really enjoy looking at magazine articles for these
elements. In MATH the students are working on adding and subtracting numbers using ten’s and one’s. Each day they use ten frames,
cubes and place value mats to help figure out equations. We are also working on money and time throughout the year so please help your
kiddo out with these skills whenever the chance comes up! Also *Reminder- Homework is due every Friday…be sure to fill out those Frog
Logs! As always thanks supporting your child’s education! ~ Miss Cottenoir
Miss Moore’s Kindergarten~ Since the beginning of Kindergarten, we have learned so much. We have been practicing our counting skills
as well as our reading skills. We have learned seven high-frequency words (I, like, the, and, see, we, a). During writing, we have learned to
start our sentences with a capital letter and end them with a period. We can even sound out words and write all of the sounds that we
hear. The book bags in our classroom have been a huge hit. Everyone has brought them back at least one time and gotten to take home a
new book. Several of us have even brought our book bags back more than once and gotten to take home many new and exciting books.
Please read these books to me that I bring home and record them onto my Frog Logs. So far, the year in Kindergarten has been awesome! I
can’t wait to see what else we will be learning!
Miss Bauer’s First Grade
Handwriting- This next week, we will be working with lowercase letters l, k, and y. Please remind your students to practice good
handwriting at home!
Reading- On Monday, we will begin talking about how words and pictures help tell a story. This is connected with their own writing! A
few points we are working on: Two and three letter clusters with s (strap, skip, smell), Antonyms- words that are opposites (black/white,
tall/short), Singular nouns- names one noun (one hat), Plural nouns- names more than one noun (many books).
We are also reviewing short e sounds in words (sped, jet, get) High Frequency words for the week are: draw, after, pictures, read, was,
write(Read it, spell it, Read it, Write it)(Flash cards work great!).
Math- Now we are moving into Subtraction! We will tell and write subtraction story problems, play Roll and Record Subtraction, and Fivein-a-Row Subtraction throughout the week (numbers will stay below 12). Keep asking questions like: Who has more or less? How many
more or less do they have (compare)? Show me how you solved it.
Writing- We are coming to an end on writing using Authors As Mentors. Our ON DEMAND TEST will be November 20.
Here is the checklist we will be working toward: Does your story have a strong beginning, written over 5+ pages, did you use
capitalization and punctuation (. ! ?), does you picture match your story, did you use dialogue?
Thank you for your support at home! It helps so much
Here is another activity to try at home with
your children. This game is practicing
recognizing groups of objects (dots on dice)
and adding. If you don't have dice, draw the
dots onto slips of paper like on a die and pull
the numbers from the pile instead of rolling.
Put the numbers back into the pile after each
time you draw. Invite brothers, sisters, and
adults of all ages to join in. Have fun!
Parent Group News
A big “Thank you” goes out to Mara Mills for organizing the book fair! We appreciate your efforts Mara!
Title I Specialist, Kay Fabricus will share the Aspen Park School Improvement plan at the November parent group meeting on Nov.
21 at 3:15 in the library. Mrs. Fabricus will give a quick training on setting academic goals with your child. Your Aspen Park child
will get to be involved at this meeting! Door prizes will be given away!
Parents will be voting on the design for the Aspen Park t-shirts. Designs have been created by students during art class.
The fall family night was fabulous! Over 400 people attended! Thank you for being there!

Book of the Month
This month’s character trait is Trustworthy. In the book, Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire, Gilbert is selected to be George
Washington in a class play. He is nervous about forgetting his lines and wants to practice at home. When nobody is
looking, he slips the school costume (hat) into his backpack. The next day he forgets the hat at home and lies to his
teacher and almost gets his friend, Philip, in trouble. Is Gilbert trustworthy? Take a moment to talk to your child about
being a trustworthy person. Happy Reading! Jodi Reed, Reading Facilitator
Land purchased for new elementary school
The Wyoming School Facilities Department has approved land purchase for a new K-3 school. This school will NOT replace any
existing schools. We will then have four K-3 schools--Aspen Park, Ashgrove, Jackson, and the new school. When the school is
finished, Rendezvous will move back to a school with only grades 4 and 5.
