Rock-’n’-roll started a revolution.
According to some historians, rock began in July 1954 when a truck driver named Elvis
Presley went into Sun Studios in Memphis and recorded That´s all right mamma. He was
the right man in the right place: he was handsome, talented, and charismatic. And more
than that, he was white. Elvis danced and sang like a black man. Elvis also opened the
doors to many black rock-’n’-roll singers.
Life for a white rock-’n’-roll singer wasn´t easy, much less for a black one. Before Elvis,
just a few black people like Chuck Berry and Bill Halley played rock.
Yes, rock-’n’-roll is black music like the blues, samba and hip-hop. All of them have
characteristics in common that came from Africa.
Rock-’n’-roll changed society. For the first time, white and black people sang and danced
to the same rhythm.
