English Homework tasks - Autumn 2 (November to December 2015) Week 8 - Monday 2nd November 2015 Topic: Commas. 1.My task - Write 5 sentences that use commas in a list. Here is an example: At The Kingston Academy we wear black blazers, charcoal skirt or trousers, green and blue ties and black shoes. 2. Core - Write 5 sentences that use commas to separate an embedded subordinate clause. You may know them as COMMAS for CLAUSES, A DROP IN Clause. Here is an example: Ms Wade, who is an English teacher at The Kingston Academy , is holding auditions for the Shakespeare production in December. Underline the subordinate clauses. Tip: start your subordinate clauses with phrases like: who is.../ who has / which is…/ where I / where she... Here is another example: 3. Challenge a.Explain the difference between these two sentences. Let’s eat Grandma! Let’s eat, Grandma. b. How can we punctuate this sentence so it has two different meanings? A woman without her man is nothing. c. Now write down 2 more identical sentences where the meaning changes if the punctuation is changed. Week 9 - Monday 9th November 2015 Topic: Colons. Colons come before a list of items, a quotation, or an explanation. 1. My task - Write 5 sentences that use colons to introduce a list. For example - At The Kingston Academy you will often need: writing equipment for lessons, a PE kit and a reading book. 2.Core - Choose 3 of your favourite sentences from the novel you are reading. Use a colon to introduce the sentence and explain why you like it. Here is an example: In the novel ‘To KIll a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee the writer uses the sentence: “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This sentence is effective because it explores the idea of empathy. 3. Challenge - The colon can be used to emphasise and draw attention to a phrase or single word at the end of a sentence. For example: After three weeks of deliberation, the jury finally reached a verdict: guilty. Five continents, three dozen countries, over a hundred cities: this was the trip of a lifetime. Now write 3 examples of your own. 4. Optional Uber Challenge - Plan a starter activity about colons to teach to the rest of the class or a small group. Week 10 - Monday 16th November 2015 Topic: Exclamation marks and question marks. 1. My task - Write down 3 rules you already know about using exclamation marks and question marks. 2. Core - Write down 5 sentences that use exclamation marks. Then write down 5 sentences that use question marks. 3. Challenge - Write down 3 rhetorical questions. Don’t forget the question marks! Explain why they are rhetorical. 4. Optional Uber Challenge - Plan a starter activity about exclamation marks and question marks. Be ready to teach it to a small group or the rest of the class. Week 11 - Monday 23rd November 2015 Topic: Speech marks 1.My task - Write down 5 rules you already know about using speech marks in direct speech. 2. Core - Write a conversation between a child and parent starting with: “You’re not going out like that!” It should be about a page in your book. Be entertaining and accurate. 3. Challenge - Find a conversation in a novel you are reading. Continue it in the same style. If this isn’t possible, add a conversation that would happen between the characters using speech marks. Be imaginative and accurate as possible. Week 12 - Monday 30th November 2015 Topic: apostrophes 1.My task - Write down 2 sentences; 1 uses its as posession and 1 uses it’s as a contraction. Here are some examples: The school has announced its results. (Apostrophe is NOT needed.) It’s been a week since I saw you. (Apostrophe IS needed.) 2.Core - Write 5 sentences that show possession with a singular noun by adding an apostrophe plus the letter s. Week 13 - Monday 7th December 2015 Topic: Parentheses or Brackets Parentheses (always used in brackets) allow a writer to provide more information as a single word, phrase or complete sentence. 1.My task - Write 3 sentences using parenthesesto add more information. Here is an example: The coach (and her team) arrived at the stadium. 2.Core - Now write 3 sentences that explain abbreviations. Eg - The NSPCC (National Society for the Protection of Children) is a wonderful charity. 3. Challenge - Winston Churchill (Prime Minister of the UK) gave many inspirational speeches. Week 14 - Monday 14th December 2015 Topic: Reading Challenge. Ensure you have nearly finished your December book (Horror) and then complete a task from Section C in the reading activities bank over the Christmas holidays. Include any snacks you have as well. Homework Tasks- Autumn 2 (November to December 2015) Art Homework 1 (w/c 16 Nov) My task: Take a series of selfies using your chrome book camera. Think about pose, expression, background - how can you show your personality in a photo? Core: Choose your 2 favourite images and email these to me so that I can print them for the next lesson ( [email protected] ). Challenge: Include objects that represent your hobbies, e.g. dancing shoes, a book, a tennis racket etc… Uber-challenge: Write a paragraph about your selfie - how does it represent your personality? Art Homework 2 (w/c 14 Dec) My task: Go to the National Portrait Gallery website: npg.org.uk (search COLLECTIONS) and select one portrait that interests you. This should be different to the artworks already discussed this term. Save this portrait onto the art folder on your Google Drive. Core: Print off the image and stick it in your sketchbook, or draw it. Write the name of the artist, the title of the artwork and the date it was made. Include a brief description of it. Challenge : Explain why you chose this image - what interests you about the artwork? Do you know the sitter (the person in the portrait)? The way the artwork is made? Homework Tasks- Autumn 2 (November to December 2015) All homework for Digital Literacy will be set and marked using Google Classroom ( https://classroom.google.com/ ). Full details of all assignments will be posted, along with any files needed to complete the work. Pupils should hand in the completed work online by the deadline given in Google Classroom. Task 1 week commencing 23rd November My task For any Science experiment that you have done since that school year began, create a Google Drawing of the equipment used, with labels. Then create a new Google Doc, add suitable titles and an aim, ensuring that styles are used to format the headings. Add your diagram, and then create a suitably formatted table for your results. Type your results into the table. You will be assessed on the quality of the drawing and how you have used styles and formatting. Core task Underneath the work, write a few sentences about what is meant by “working in the cloud” and the advantages of doing this. You may need to do some research on the web to help you. Challenge task Create a new Google Docs document. Write a guide for novice users of spreadsheets about how they should choose the most appropriate type of chart to display data from a spreadsheet.
