BHSD Learning Partnership Presents: CANS: Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths Train-the-Trainer John S. Lyons, PhD. Developed the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment tool. Dr. Lyons is the premier expert. He has trained hundreds of professionals in multiple U.S. states, Canada, and around the world. He is internationally recognized for his work. CANS is used in child serving systems in more than 30 states across the country as well as in several other countries. Dr. Lyons has expertise in assisting local governments and agencies in integrating the CANS into their existing mental health assessment and treatment planning protocol. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) standardized assessment can be used to assist in treatment planning (including for individualized education plans, permanency, etc). The CANS operates from a shared vision and philosophy consistent with the system of care. It is a consensus based approach used to identify strengths and needs in order to move forward in a transformative way with children and their families, programs, and systems. To be a CANS Comprehensive 5+ trainer, one must have received a reliability score of .8 or above on the CANS. Potential trainer must also be comfortable making presentations to an audience, comfortable developing a narrative/sponsorship statement and have their own stories to tell about using CANS with families. To be a CANS: EC trainer, one must have been trained in the CANS: EC and received a reliability score of .8 or above. Also must have a foundational knowledge in Early Childhood Development and Mental Health. Potential trainer must also be comfortable making presentations to an audience, comfortable developing a narrative/sponsorship statement and have their own stories to tell about using CANS with families. A CANS trainer is an agency designated position whose name has been submitted to the Mental Health Department. These identified individuals will be the only ones participating in this training. Once certified as a CANS trainer, that trainer can train staff within their agency/organization. Targeted Audience: Participation in the CANS Train-the-Trainer Training is only by individuals who are designated by their agency and whose name has been submitted to the Behavioral Health Services Department prior to the training date. These identified individuals will be the only ones participating in this training. *This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs, as required by the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Participants will: 1. To learn specific training techniques that help staff develop reliability in the use of the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths as demonstrated by staff obtaining an intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.70 or higher using a vignette. 2. To understand the role of structured assessments in the child serving system as demonstrated by the ability to identify the linkage between the assessment and the service planning process. 3. To understand how the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths can be used to support system of care philosophy through identifying a shared vision for the child and family team. 4. To be comfortable making presentations and developing a narrative/sponsorship statement and to utilize their own stories to tell about using CANS with families.
