On 2nd the Yacht Club de Morlaix visited us for the weekend, some 150 boats occupied the marinas. The Yacht-Club de Barnville-Carteret arrived on Friday 3rd and we entertained them in the clubhouse. It gave us a chance to practice our French. In the afternoon they all went off for a treasure hunt that was organised by our Rear Commodore, Stuart Crisp. On Saturday 4th we had the Round Sark race sponsored by Nashcopy. Like the previous ones, the race was well attended and all the crews came to the Club to enjoy a drink and our traditional hot dogs. The following weekend the yacht Club de Le Légué came to our shores. Stuart Crisp, once again, planned the entertainment and kept them well occupied for Saturday and Sunday in spite of the weather. Unfortunately, because of the weather we had to cancel the cruise to St Aubin and the Governor’s Cup which we hope to regain next year. The most important event of the month, or should I say of the year, was our chief steward’s 70th birthday party. Mike (Blainey) entertained at the Club all the members and friends who could attend. We had pink and white bubbly and anything else that took our fancy with great nibbles. Thank you very much Mike for your kind generosity. We have the Impi Race, sponsored by Oak Trust, to look forward to. It will take place on Saturday 2nd July. A marquee will be erected on the Careening Hard Arm and a hog roast with all the trimmings will be offered on Saturday evening. This year a discothèque will be provided so all you ravers can have a great time. I look forward to seeing you there. Enzo Diacano Commodore Social Scene ‘Club Lunches’ The programme for July is as follows: Tues 5 Tues 19 1230 1230 Pasta Lunch Curry Lunch £10 £11 Bookings: Please sign the list on the Notice board or contact Carolyn. Boat Names Piers du Pré writes – “Under the heading Boat Names, I though you may be interested where ours came from. One of our previous boats was a 35 foot, 55mph Cougar Predator 35. She was long, narrow, low in the water, and great fun. We hit on the name L'eau Profile. When we changed from fast and uncomfy to slow and really enjoyable, we bought a Fleming 55 trawler yacht which is kept in Beaucette. L'eau Profile would not suit the Fleming, so with our four sons and ourselves gathered in a family conference, we set about finding a new name but with the caveat that we had to keep the word 'eau' in the name. After many attempts our youngest piped up and said, "Since it's Mum and Dad's new toy, it has to be Play d'eau!" Cruising Well, it has been a busy time going nowhere! Association Nautique Du Légué We moved the Le Légué cruise to June in order to have more clement weather; well that was a good idea. Most of the 15 boats made it on the Saturday in time for drinks at the United Club which was well supported by local members. Here are a couple of pictures: After speeches by the Commodore and the Vice President of ANL, gifts were exchanged. As usual ANL were very generous, the main gift was a handmade (by one of the members) chest containing a square boules set including rules in English and in French. Here is a picture of me practising. Carolyn looks a bit worried and I would like to apologise to Ann-Marie Mitchison, and I hope your ankle gets better soon. As well as the boules set we were given a whole ham which will be used for a social event later in the year. We gave them a framed picture of Castle Cornet and a box of various items not available in France and for which the French cuisine has suffered considerably – HP Sauce, Salad Cream, Branston Pickle and such like. Sunday started with breakfast for 40, and continued with all day rain! Needless to say the ‘un cours de trésor’ had to be abandoned. The ANL members went for a paddle around Town after breakfast then returned for some cracking Fish and Chips from the Chip Inn. Then the fun started, we played silly indoor games – sorry no photos – you should have been there! After a siesta ANL returned to the club for the goodbye drinks and the world famous hotdogs. I think Xavier summed up the whole event “C'était vraiment un week-end très réussi”. Thanks must go to, Enzo and Becky, Dino and Celeste, David and Ann Marie, John, Alison, Sally and Peter, and of course Sarah, and from ANL, Pascal, Xavier, Marie-Jose, and Christian and Brigitte. Also Michael and Sam. 2012 it is our turn to visit Le Légué and continue the 25 year friendship. St Aubin 2011 Another blow out! It had to be cancelled due to the weather, not the only casualty that weekend, the Carey Olsen Inter-Island race, and the GYC Motor Section cruise to Carteret were also abandoned. We held the briefing on Thursday and decided that we would try to rearrange the St Aubin cruise for the weekend of the 30 July. I will keep you informed. As a consolation most of the would-be cruisers went for a meal at the Swan after the Friday night meat draw. Enough of the past – now for the future: Les Écréhous Cruise to Les Écréhous and Carteret, setting off on Friday 15th July, spending the evening in Carteret and the following day on Les Écréhous. Thursday 14 July Briefing 1800 RCIYC club Friday 15 July sail to Carteret Evening meal Saturday 16 July Sail to Les Écréhous Return to Carteret Sunday 17 July Return home The details are on the Club House notice board along with the sign up sheet. Either visit the club or phone or email Carolyn or just give Michael a ring. If you have not been before you will be amazed! London Cruise It has been decided to postpone the London Cruise for this year and plan for 2012 before or after the Olympics. The Olympic dates are 27 July to 12 August. Thanks to everyone who expressed interest and offered to help. Finally ........ ....... and then this iceberg came from nowhere. Stuart Crisp Rear Commodore (Cruising) e-mail: crispscrisp[at]aol.com Sailing Insurance Corporation of the Channel Islands Dinard Race The 10th of June saw the annual overnight passage race to Dinard, again kindly sponsored by the Insurance Corporation of the Channel Islands. With very light winds forecast the race fleet of 7 boats were instructed to take their time when they passed the South West Minquier Cardinal Mark, should the wind not fill in, in order to ensure a result. The fleet set off at 1800, with Moojo (R Martell) opting to hoist their spinnaker from the start line, seeking to gain maximum advantage from the light Westerly wind. Most of the fleet stayed in touch but the IRC rated boats slowly broke the stranglehold to disappear over the horizon. As the sun set, the wind started filling in and the miles were soon clicking away on the log. In the early morning hours, boats took their elapsed time as the Atterage Buoy formed a transit with Cap Frehal lighthouse. Most crews opted to get some well deserved sleep once through the lock in St Malo. This year the prizegiving lunch was hosted at the St Malo Yacht Club. It is a well known tradition that the winner of the race is obliged to buy the whole racing fleet Calvados to celebrate the honour. After a jovial lunch the results where announced, and sighs of relief could be heard from each skipper as I worked up the list. For the second year running, Alvine 2’s (S Nicolle) crew had to put their hand in their pockets for the Calvados. The joviality continued as all the crews visited the various bars in St Malo, exchanging banter as they went along. On the way back, the fleet paid tribute to Peter Lanoe, whose ashes were scattered at the South West Minquier Buoy the year before. It was a frisky sail back, but a great weekend was had by all.
