I.Course information Course Number Title in English Title in 0AUG418 Chinese 電影英文 Learning English through Movies Two/one 半 semester 2.0 Credits Required/ Elective Lecturing hours 通識 正課時數: 2 小時 Eligible Class standing Field Category 通識 一般通識 This course is designed to help students learn English by screening movies and analyzing some lines excerpted from the script. Students are required to bring a notebook to take notes when watching the movies. They are also encouraged to discuss and analyze the plots, themes, characters, and the lines of the movies screened. They are required to read the introductory excerpts prepared by the instructor before they watch the film. Six or five films are scheduled to be screened during the Course whole semester. We will spend three weeks reading part of the script, Description screening the film, and discussing the vocabulary, phrases, sentences, theme, plot, and cultural context of the film. Students are required to should prepare a notebook and note down English vocabularies, phrases, and sentences in the class. At the end of the semester students should turn in their notebooks. Notebook will take up 30 points. Also required is a ten minute short film adapted from the film we screen. Students should turn in the DVDs they produce in the second last week of the semester. Sherlock Holmes has been a popular subject for film and TV series adaptations. The films we will screen and study include recent hits of “Sherlock Holmes,” and Granada TV Sherlock Holmes series based upon some short stories, such as “The Man with Twisted Lip,” `The Adventure of the Engineer`s Thumb,` “Illustrious Client,” “The Red-Headed League,” “The Blue Carbuncle,” and “The Bruce-Partington Plan.” Students are required to watch two Sherlock Holmes films outside the classroom.
